UPI is designed to move money between participating bank accounts through payment apps, but it is not risk-free. The most important safety rule is simple: entering your UPI PIN authorizes a transaction. Never enter it to receive money, and never share it with anyone—including someone claiming to be bank support.
How safe is UPI?
UPI has transaction safeguards, but they cannot prevent every scam. A transfer may be authorized because a user is deceived into approving a payment. Before entering your PIN, read the action and recipient shown in the app; a PIN prompt should be treated as approval for a transaction, not as a routine step to collect money.
The NPCI UPI FAQ defines the UPI PIN as the passcode used to authorize bank transactions. NPCI says not to share it and says bank customer support will never ask for it. Its fraud-awareness guidance warns about tactics that try to make people act before checking what they are approving.
Common UPI scams and warning signs
Fake cashback, refunds, or rewards
A message or caller may promise cashback, a refund, or sale proceeds and send a link or QR code. If the process asks you to scan a code and enter your PIN, stop: NPCI says scanning a QR code and entering a PIN is for making a payment, not receiving money. Verify any payment in your own app rather than relying on a screenshot or message.

QR codes and collect requests presented as incoming money
A person may say you must approve a request to receive funds. RBI’s consumer-awareness guidance warns against instructions such as “Please enter PIN to receive money!!” A PIN prompt to complete a transaction means money is being sent from your side. Inspect the app screen and recipient details; decline unexpected requests.
Online-sale buyer tricks
A supposed buyer may pose as a genuine customer and persuade a seller to approve a request, often claiming it is needed to pay for an item. RBI describes this pattern in its guidance on online-sale scams. If the app asks for your PIN, you are authorizing a transaction; do not enter it unless you intend to send money to the displayed recipient.

Impersonation, malicious links, and pressure
Scammers may imitate bank or payment-service support through search results, social-media grievance posts, SMS, or direct messages. They may send a link, ask you to install an unfamiliar app, or use threats and urgency to stop you from checking. Find your bank’s support route independently rather than using a number or link supplied in an unsolicited message.

Unknown apps and investment schemes
NPCI lists unknown app downloads and fake investment schemes among fraud patterns. Treat requests to install an unfamiliar app or move money as part of an investment opportunity with caution, particularly when someone is pressuring you to act or asking for authentication details.

What NPCI’s “jumped deposit” clarification does—and does not—say
In a clarification dated 13 January 2025, NPCI said the “jumped deposit” scenario it addressed required the user to select a payment request, explicitly choose “pay,” and authorize with a PIN; merely opening the UPI or bank app did not process that described payment. This is a clarification about that mechanism, not a guarantee that every attack is impossible. Check the action shown in your app before authorizing anything.
How to protect your money before approving a transaction
- Keep authentication details private. Never disclose your UPI PIN, OTP, or other authentication details to a caller or message sender. NPCI specifically says bank customer support will never ask for your UPI PIN.
- Read the app’s action and recipient. Before entering your PIN, check whether the screen says pay, approve, or collect, and verify who will receive the money. Do not proceed if the action is unexpected or unclear.
- Do not use a QR code or PIN to receive money. This applies to supposed refunds, cashback, and sale proceeds. Check that a payment has arrived in your own app.
- Avoid unsolicited support links and unfamiliar apps. Locate support independently through your bank or payment provider.
- Review activity and requests. Check transaction history and pending collect requests in your app. BHIM lists controls to block or mark illicit collect requests, but features vary by app. See the NPCI UPI FAQ for general UPI guidance and BHIM information for BHIM-specific features.
- If your phone is lost, act quickly. NPCI advises blocking the mobile number associated with UPI; contact your bank or payment provider promptly as well.
What to do if you suspect fraud or money is missing
- Contact your bank promptly. Use an independently verified contact route. NPCI directs users to their bank about fraudulent, unidentified, or unauthorized transactions. Keep the transaction reference, time, amount, recipient or UPI ID, messages, and other evidence available.
- Report cyber financial fraud in India. Call 1930 immediately and file a report through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. The portal requests incident details and supporting information.
- Raise an issue in the app when available. NPCI says users can raise grievances and check transaction status through participating bank UPI apps. BHIM also lists issue reporting for declined transactions. App options differ.
- Use NPCI’s complaint route when appropriate. NPCI’s complaint information explains that eligible complaints are routed to the member bank or institution, which is responsible for resolution.
Failed transaction or scam payment: why the distinction matters
A failed transaction and a payment you authorized after being deceived are not the same. NPCI says failed debits should reverse and advises contacting your bank if the amount does not return immediately. It also says an initiated payment cannot be stopped. That reversal guidance does not establish that an authorized scam transfer will be recovered, so report it promptly rather than assuming it can be cancelled.
