Undeveloped Polaroid film can sometimes still produce pictures after its recommended period, but there is no reliable way to tell whether a particular pack will work without using it. Polaroid recommends using film within 12 months of its production date for best results; that date is not a guaranteed cutoff. Older film may show faded contrast, color shifts, uneven development—or fail to develop.
How to tell whether your Polaroid film is past its recommended period
Look for the production date stamped on the film packaging. It tells you when the film was made, not how it was stored or whether its chemistry remains usable. Polaroid’s recommendation is to use film within 12 months of production for best results. Passing that period does not prove the film is unusable, just as being within it does not guarantee a good result. Polaroid explains the date and its recommendation.
Use the date alongside what you know about the pack: whether it stayed sealed and how consistently it was stored. These clues can help set expectations, but they cannot test the film before exposure.
What can happen when you shoot old film?
Film chemistry changes as it ages, and results depend in part on storage, temperature, and humidity. Polaroid identifies low contrast, color shifts, and uneven chemistry spreading as common defects in expired film. Some carefully stored packs may still make acceptable pictures; others may not process. Polaroid does not provide a success-rate statistic or a way to predict the result of an individual pack.
#1 Best Overall
- 48 Photo Bulk Pack- Our classic Polaroid film is back with a new formula exclusively for I-Type cameras with 48 classic iconic white framed photos.
- New Classic- I-Type film uses Polaroid's latest chemistry to provide richer colors, tones, and contrast. I-Type film is not compatible with vintage Polaroid cameras.
- Light it up- Polaroid instant film loves light. The more light in your shot, the better your photo will turn out. Always shoot in bright light or use the camera flash.
- Develop- Photos will appear blank at first. Photos develop within 15 minutes. Shield photos from the light and place them face down as they develop.
- Create- Every photo you create is rich, textured, and unique. Unpredictable, imperfect, and impossible to reproduce, just like you.
“Expired” in this context means past the manufacturer’s recommended period for best results—not that every frame is automatically unusable. Treat shooting old stock as a gamble, and use it only if you are comfortable with uncertain results.
How to store unopened Polaroid film
- Keep packs in their unopened boxes, flat, in a cool, dry place.
- If you refrigerate them, Polaroid recommends a constant temperature of 4–18°C (41–65°F). Do not freeze the packs.
- Avoid frequent temperature changes, which can contribute to moisture-related damage.
- Before shooting with refrigerated film, let it return to ambient temperature for at least one hour.
These are Polaroid’s storage recommendations, not a guarantee that a pack will remain usable indefinitely. See Polaroid’s film storage guidance.

What to do with a partly used pack or a newly ejected photo
If the pack is already in the camera
Polaroid advises against removing a partly used pack: doing so exposes the remaining shots to light. If you are concerned about the film, finish the pack in the camera rather than taking it out to inspect or store it separately.
After a photo ejects
Shield the fresh picture from strong light during the early development period and follow the development time printed on the package. The film’s condition and the recommended handling both matter; shielding a photo does not reverse age-related chemical changes.

Why a photo may have an undeveloped patch
A U- or V-shaped area that has not developed can mean developer paste did not spread across the whole frame. Polaroid lists poor roller spreading, insufficient developer paste, and dried paste among possible causes. Film age and storage can also be relevant; if the film and clean rollers do not explain the pattern, camera alignment may be involved.

- DOUBLE PACK FILM: Polaroid Instant Color Film for I-Type cameras with two packs of 8 count film for a total of 16 photos.
- LIGHT IT UP: Polaroid Instant Film loves light. The more light in your shot, the better your photo will turn out. Always shoot in bright light or use the camera flash.
- DEVELOP: All photos appear blank at first. Photos develop within 15 minutes. Shield photos from the light and place them face down as they develop.
- CREATE: Every photo you create is rich textured and unique. Unpredictable, imperfect, and impossible to reproduce.
- STORE CHILLED: Temperature affects how the film works so keep it stored chilled in the fridge, do not freeze.
- Check whether the rollers are clean and unobstructed.
- Consider the film’s production date and storage history.
- If clean rollers and the film do not account for repeated patches, consider having the camera’s alignment checked.
These checks may help prevent a repeat problem, but they cannot restore chemically aged film or repair a photo after exposure. See Polaroid’s explanation of undeveloped patches and its photo troubleshooting guidance.

If you already have old film, weigh its production date, known storage history, and whether it remained sealed. None of these factors reliably confirms that the chemistry will work, so use the pack only if you accept the possibility of disappointing or missing images.

If replacing it, check that the film format is compatible with your camera, look for the production date, and choose a seller whose stock and handling you trust. A newer pack is not a promise of perfect results, but matching the format and checking the date help avoid preventable problems.
