NFL Network reported Friday that Tyson Bagent was expected to start for the Chicago Bears against the New York Jets on Sunday, Oct. 4, 2026. That was a reported expectation—not an official team announcement: the Bears had not named a starter, and Case Keenum remained in the mix.
Who is expected to start at quarterback?
Bagent was the expected starter, according to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, whose report was carried by NFL.com on Oct. 2. Rapoport said Bagent took the majority of the first-team practice reps that week. He also said coach Ben Johnson had not yet named the starter officially.
Why is Caleb Williams out?
The Bears ruled Williams out of the game with a hamstring injury. He was injured against Minnesota, and this was set to be his second consecutive game missed, according to the Bears’ Oct. 2 injury update.

Yes. Chicago’s injury update said either Bagent or Keenum would start, while NFL.com’s report said Keenum remained a possibility. Keenum had started the Bears’ previous game against Philadelphia; Bagent’s edge in the reporting was the majority of first-team practice reps and his status as the backup who won that role out of camp. The Bears’ Week 4 news roundup described the two quarterbacks preparing together and did not announce a final choice.
