Yes. Thermal paste is generally an inexpensive computer-cooling consumable, but there is no single established market-wide average price. The manufacturer listings available here show CORSAIR TM30 at $7.99 in the US and ARCTIC MX-7 at €20.99 excluding VAT and shipping; those are snapshots for different products and retail contexts, not a like-for-like comparison. Whether a material is worth its price depends on whether it suits the device, cooler, and installation—not just its label or advertised conductivity.
What does thermal paste do?
Thermal paste is one type of thermal interface material (TIM). It helps couple a heat source, such as a processor, to a heatsink by filling imperfections at the interface. TIMs also include pads, putties, phase-change materials, and thermal insulators. These categories serve different design needs; a pad or putty is not automatically a substitute for paste.
For an overview of these material types and their intended roles, see Nordson EFD’s Thermal Compound Selection Guide and Honeywell’s TIM product overview.
What do the cited prices tell you?
The available manufacturer price examples establish that specific consumer thermal pastes can be listed at modest prices, but they do not establish a typical price range or market average. CORSAIR listed TM30 at $7.99 on its US product page; that price can change. ARCTIC listed MX-7 at €20.99, excluding VAT and shipping, and its page shows multiple sizes, so that figure should not be assumed to apply to every size.
#1 Best Overall
- CONSISTENT QUALITY: Our thermal paste packaging design has evolved over time, but the formula has remained the same, ensuring reliable performance.
- EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE: ARCTIC MX-4 thermal paste is made of carbon microparticles, guaranteeing extremely high thermal conductivity. This ensures that heat from the CPU/GPU is dissipated quickly & efficiently
- SAFE APPLICATION: The MX-4 is metal-free and non-electrical conductive which eliminates any risks of causing short circuit, adding more protection to the CPU and VGA cards
- HIGH DURABILITY: In contrast to metal and silicon thermal compound, the MX-4 does not compromise over time. Once applied, you do not need to apply it again as it will last at least for 8 years
- EASY TO APPLY: With an ideal consistency, the MX-4 is very easy to use, even for beginners
| Product | Manufacturer-listed price | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| CORSAIR TM30 | $7.99 | US listing snapshot; price may change. CORSAIR product page |
| ARCTIC MX-7 | €20.99 | Listed MSRP excluding VAT and shipping; the page shows multiple sizes, so the figure is not established for every size. ARCTIC product page |
The currencies, products, and retail contexts differ, so these figures should not be compared as though they were equivalent offers. Check the current local listing and the quantity supplied before deciding what a particular tube costs you per application.
What makes a thermal interface material worth its price?
Price alone—and a single advertised thermal-conductivity figure—cannot establish value. AMD’s device-specific DS955 guidelines, released January 13, 2025, identify factors that can affect TIM selection and performance:
Rank #2
- WELL PROVEN QUALITY: The design of our thermal paste packagings has changed several times, the formula of the composition has remained unchanged, so our MX pastes have stood for high quality
- 100 % ORIGINAL THROUGH AUTHENTICITY CHECK: Through our Authenticity Check, it is possible to verify the authenticity of every single product
- EASY TO APPLY: With an ideal consistency, the MX-4 is very easy to use, even for beginners, Spatula incl.
- Compatibility and material type: Use the material specified for the device and cooler. The required material depends on the design and the gap being filled.
- Thermal performance in the actual interface: Conductivity matters, but performance depends on the material in its intended application, including the bond line and mounting pressure. AMD says higher conductivity is more efficient at transferring heat; lower conductivity produces a greater temperature differential across the interface.
- Electrical behavior: Some metal-based compounds conduct electricity. AMD warns that contamination can put other device or motherboard elements at risk and does not recommend electrically conductive TIM for the Versal device context covered by its guidance. That device-specific advice is not a universal rule for every computer component.
- Spreading and application: How a material spreads, how it is applied, and the pressure used can affect the interface. A material that is difficult to apply safely may be a poor fit even if its listed price or specification looks attractive.
- Stability and reliability: Consider how well the material is expected to remain suitable over time and whether the application has particular service requirements.
Thermal conductivity values also deserve context. ARCTIC says it does not publish conductivity values for its own pastes and pads because, in its view, some manufacturers invent or inflate them. That is ARCTIC’s stated company position, not independent proof about every competing product. As an example of why product specifications should not be treated as a universal ranking, Honeywell’s industrial catalog lists TG2000I thermal grease at 2.0 W/m·K and TG5500 at 5.0 W/m·K; those are specifications for those formulations, not a comparison of consumer CPU pastes.

- Check the device and cooler documentation. Identify whether the interface calls for paste, a pad, putty, or another material. Do not replace one type with another just because it is cheaper or easier to find.
- Match the material to the gap and mounting conditions. Look for guidance on the required interface, pressure, and application method; these affect whether a material is suitable.
- Review electrical properties and application risk. If the compound could contact nearby components, verify its electrical behavior and follow the device maker’s instructions.
- Compare credible product information and total quantity. Look beyond conductivity claims to suitability, stability, ease of application, the amount supplied, and the current price in your market.
For a secondary comparison of TIM categories and product-specific specifications, Honeywell’s overview distinguishes thermal greases from gap-filler pads, putty pads, phase-change materials, and insulators. These categories illustrate why a material’s intended role matters more than treating every TIM as interchangeable.
Quick Recap
