In January 2024, Kerala Health Minister Veena George told the state Assembly that government hospitals had essential medicines in stock and that patients faced no shortage. An earlier report described gaps at specific facilities and for particular drugs. The accounts cover different scopes, and the sources do not provide comparable statewide inventory data to settle the disagreement. They also do not establish what stocks are like now.
What did the health minister say?
On January 29, 2024, George responded to a question from opposition MLA Anoop Jacob in the Kerala Assembly. PTI reported her statement: “We have ensured the stock of medicines in all hospitals. There is no shortage of medicines for the patients.” The statement concerned medicines on the essential drug list and their availability in hospitals through Kerala Medical Services Corporation Limited (KMSCL). PTI’s January 29 report attributed the claim to George; it is not, by itself, an independent verification of every hospital’s inventory.
PTI described KMSCL as the central procurement agency for essential drugs and equipment for public healthcare institutions. George also said medicines worth ₹554 crore had been distributed through January of the 2024 financial year, compared with ₹256 crore distributed through government hospitals in 2015–16. Those are figures she provided, as reported by PTI; distribution value does not establish whether a particular medicine was available at a particular facility when a patient needed it. What did the earlier report find?
On January 4, Onmanorama reported shortages of particular medicines at certain facilities, including cancer medicines and essential drugs. It also reported that a visit to a KMSCL warehouse yielded 10 of around 40 listed items requested. That is an outlet’s account of a specific visit, not a statewide inventory audit. Opposition Leader V. D. Satheesan alleged in 2024 that patients were being asked to buy 75% of medicines from private stores. PTI reported the allegation, but the cited account does not independently verify that percentage; it should not be read as an established statewide measure. PTI’s report of Satheesan’s claim.
Why do the accounts differ?

A statewide claim about essential-list availability and reports of gaps in selected places or medicines are not necessarily measuring the same thing. The available accounts do not include comparable hospital-by-hospital inventory records that would show whether shortages were isolated, widespread, or resolved. Neither the minister’s statement nor the reported examples alone settle the statewide question.

Does this tell patients what is available now?
No. These reports describe statements and observations from January 2024. They do not establish current stocks in Kerala government hospitals in 2026. Availability can vary by hospital, medicine, and date, so a patient seeking a particular drug should check directly with the relevant hospital or its pharmacy rather than infer current availability from these reports.
