The SteelSeries Apex 3 is a full-size, wired gaming keyboard with quiet rubber dome (membrane) switches—not mechanical switches. Its soft, low-noise typing, numpad, wrist rest and media controls make it a practical choice for everyday gaming and work. But the keys have a less distinct, potentially mushy feel, and RTINGS reports long pre-travel and fairly high latency for a wired keyboard. If fast competitive response or crisp tactile feedback is your priority, those trade-offs matter.

How does the Apex 3 feel and sound?

The Apex 3 uses rubber dome switches, also described as membrane switches. They are designed for a quieter, softer press than the crisp, tactile response many people expect from a mechanical keyboard. RTINGS describes the typing experience as decent and not fatiguing, but notes that some users may find the keys mushy and short on distinct tactile feedback. The feel is personal: try one in person if possible before buying.

SteelSeries Support says, “The switch was designed to lower acoustic vibrations to reduce noise, so it’s extremely quiet to use.” RTINGS also describes typing noise as minimal. That makes the Apex 3 a quieter option relative to many gaming keyboards, not a guarantee of silence; noise depends on typing force and the surrounding environment. SteelSeries also says the POM rubber dome sheet offers “10x the durability that you typically find on gaming keyboards.” The support page does not define the comparison baseline or test method, so treat this as the manufacturer’s durability claim—not a measured lifespan or warranty promise.

Is the Apex 3 responsive enough for gaming?

RTINGS reports long pre-travel—the distance a key moves before registering—and fairly high latency for a wired keyboard. Those observations make the Apex 3 a less compelling fit for competitive players who prioritize fast inputs. For casual play, everyday typing and games where split-second response is not decisive, its quiet operation and comfortable, low-force feel may matter more.

Operating force and tactile feedback are separate considerations: RTINGS says the Apex 3 feels sturdier and requires less operating force than the Corsair K55 RGB, while the K55 has substantially lower latency and better tactile feedback. That stronger feedback may fatigue fingers faster for some users. Choose based on whether a lighter, softer press or clearer feedback and lower latency better suits how you play.

SteelSeries Apex 3 TKL RGB Gaming Keyboard – Black
  • The compact tenkeyless design is the most popular form factor used by the pros, allowing you to position the keyboard for comfort and to maximize in-game performance.
  • Our whisper quiet gaming switches with anti-ghosting technology for keystroke accuracy are made from durable low friction material for near silent use and guaranteed performance for over 20 million keypresses.
  • Designed with IP32 Water & Dust Resistant for extra durability to prevent damage from liquids and dust particles, so you can continue to play no matter what happens to your keyboard.
  • PrismSync RGB Illumination allows you to choose from millions of colors and effects from reactive lighting to interactive lightshows that bring RGB to the next level.
  • Dedicated Multimedia Controls with a clickable volume roller and media keys allowing you to adjust brightness, rewind, skip or pause all at the touch of a button.

What features does the full-size Apex 3 include?

  • Full-size layout: It includes a number pad for data entry and shortcuts, at the cost of more desk space than a tenkeyless board.
  • Magnetic wrist rest: The included wrist rest attaches magnetically and provides a place to rest your hands.
  • Media controls: A clickable roller and dedicated media keys let you adjust playback and volume without reaching for on-screen controls.
  • Three-way cable routing: Built-in channels let the cable exit in three directions to suit different desk setups.
  • IP32 resistance: SteelSeries lists water and dust resistance. This is protection against some accidents, not a guarantee that spills or liquid exposure will not damage the keyboard.

What can you customize in the RGB lighting?

The full-size Apex 3 has ten-zone RGB lighting, according to TechRadar’s roundup. It is zone-lit rather than individually customizable per key, so you cannot assign a separate lighting effect to every key. RTINGS confirms that individual-key lighting is unavailable. Its lighting can add color to a setup, but it is more limited than per-key RGB systems.

Should you choose the full-size Apex 3 or Apex 3 TKL?

The main practical choice is desk space versus a number pad. RTINGS says the two models feel the same to type on because they use the same rubber dome switches. The full-size board includes a wrist rest and ten RGB zones; the smaller TKL has eight zones.

RGB zones 10, according to TechRadar 8, according to RTINGS
Wrist rest Included Not included, according to RTINGS’ comparison

Choose the full-size Apex 3 if you regularly use a numpad or want the included wrist rest. Choose the TKL if reclaiming desk space matters more and you can do without a number pad. Neither model changes the soft rubber dome typing feel.

What are the main drawbacks?

  • Soft, potentially mushy feedback: The keys lack the distinct tactile response some typists prefer.
  • Competitive responsiveness: RTINGS reports long pre-travel and fairly high latency for a wired keyboard.
  • Zone-based RGB: Ten lighting zones do not provide per-key customization.
  • Large footprint: The full-size board needs more desk width than the TKL version.

TechRadar’s 2026 roundup categorizes the Apex 3 as a budget gaming keyboard and praises its value, RGB and quiet keystrokes while flagging limited features and membrane switches. That is an editorial judgment, not a measured market ranking.
