The Sonos Sub 4 can add deeper bass to movies and TV, but it is an upgrade for a compatible Sonos system—not a standalone subwoofer for any soundbar. Sonos says it is designed to add deeper lows to movies and shows. Whether it is a sensible buy depends first on your existing Sonos speakers and controller, then on your room, budget, and preferred bass level.
The headline’s Prime Day bestseller claim is not established by the available evidence: no specific Prime Day event, country, product listing, or ranking data is identified. Treat it as an unverified headline claim, not proof of sales performance.
What the Sonos Sub 4 adds to movies
Sonos positions Sub 4 as a wireless bass extension for compatible Sonos home theater speakers. The intended benefit is deeper low-frequency sound in movies and shows, which can give effects and music more weight. That is the manufacturer’s description of the product, not an independent listening result.
Sonos’s 2024 fact sheet lists two inward-facing 5 × 8-inch elliptical woofers, a ported cabinet, and low-frequency reach of 25 Hz. These are manufacturer specifications; the cited material does not independently verify that frequency figure or establish how the Sub 4 performs in a particular room. The same fact sheet lists Wi-Fi and Ethernet connectivity. What Hi-Fi? describes the Sub as easy to set up and well integrated, while noting that it is expensive and that music bass can sound a little “fat” rather than especially punchy. Those are that publication’s judgments, not findings from a test conducted for this article.

Check compatibility before considering a purchase
The Sub 4 is not a universal subwoofer: it must be paired with compatible Sonos products. Sonos says it works with its home theater speakers except Playbar and Playbase, and its setup guidance lists additional exclusions, including Play:1, Play:3, Play:5 (Gen 2), Connect:Amp, and first-generation SYMFONISK Bookshelf and Table Lamp. Compatibility also depends on the exact speaker configuration; some home theater products support two Subs in specified setups.
Sub 4 and Sub Gen 3 do not work with the Sonos S1 Controller app. Before buying, check Sonos’s current Sub setup and compatibility instructions against the exact speaker model, generation, and controller app you use. Do not assume that a product’s general compatibility with Sonos means it works in every older system configuration.

Its dimensions and weight matter when choosing a spot, especially if you plan to place it beside furniture or lay it flat. What Hi-Fi? says the Sub can be positioned in versatile locations and laid flat when needed; it also notes that, aside from the power cable, the connection is wireless, with Ethernet available if Wi-Fi is inadequate. Follow Sonos’s setup guidance for placement and connection with your system.

Sub 4 or Sub Mini?
Sonos also sells Sub Mini, which the company describes as a compact subwoofer and illustrates with supported Sonos pairings such as Beam or Ray for TV and certain Sonos speakers for music. It is not a general-purpose subwoofer for non-Sonos equipment. The available sources do not establish a controlled head-to-head sound comparison between Sub 4 and Sub Mini, so a choice should not be treated as a proven difference in sound quality.
- Start with compatibility: Confirm that your exact Sonos speaker and controller app support the model you are considering.
- Consider the space: Sub Mini is the compact option in Sonos’s lineup; check each model’s dimensions and the placement you can accommodate.
- Set a budget: Compare current prices where you shop. Sonos’s $799 / £799 / €899 Sub 4 figures are 2024 launch prices, not current offers.
- Think about use: Decide whether your priority is movie effects, everyday TV, or music, and whether you want a more substantial bass addition or a compact one. The sources reviewed do not prove which model sounds better for a given use.

Is the Sonos Sub 4 worth it for movies?
It may be worth considering if you already own a compatible Sonos home theater speaker, want deeper movie and TV bass, and can accommodate the unit and its price. It is a poor fit if you need a subwoofer for a non-Sonos soundbar, use an incompatible Sonos model or the S1 Controller app, or are relying on an unverified bestseller claim as evidence of value. Check the exact system fit and current price before deciding.
