The Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra is worth buying if you will use its built-in S Pen, configurable Privacy Display, long-range zoom, or premium performance. It is harder to justify if you own a recent Ultra, want the longest battery life, or would pay extra for features you rarely use. Its strongest case is a distinctive set of tools—not a dramatic upgrade in every area.
What you get with the Galaxy S26 Ultra
Samsung lists a 6.9-inch display, a 5,000 mAh battery, and a rear camera system with a 200 MP main camera, 50 MP ultra-wide camera, and 50 MP telephoto camera. The main camera has an f/1.4 aperture. The phone weighs 214 g and is 7.9 mm thick, so expect a large, substantial device rather than a compact flagship. Samsung measures the display at 6.9 inches across the full rectangle and 6.7 inches when accounting for rounded corners. Samsung’s US product page lists specifications and a manufacturer claim of up to 31 hours of video playback; that playback figure is not an independent battery test.
TechRadar’s March 2026 review lists Android 16, Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, 12 GB or 16 GB of RAM depending on storage tier, and 256 GB, 512 GB, or 1 TB storage options. The S Pen is integrated, making the phone more useful for handwriting, annotation, and other stylus tasks than a phone without a pen.
Does the S26 Ultra have a privacy screen?
It has a built-in Privacy Display, a feature Samsung describes as the world’s first built-in Privacy Display for mobile phones. That wording is Samsung’s claim, not an independent market-wide finding. The feature can be configured for selected apps and notification pop-ups, according to Tom’s Guide’s review. It is useful when you want to limit what people beside you can see without attaching a separate privacy filter.

- HELP THAT KEEPS UP: Stay in the moment while Now Nudge with Galaxy AI helps you respond faster and stay organized with smart suggestions⁵ that appear exactly when you need them on your phone
There is a trade-off: Tom’s Guide measured 1,806 nits in its HDR brightness test, compared with 1,860 nits for the S25 Ultra. The publication said Samsung provided different test results and that it planned to retest, so the reported comparison should be treated as a review measurement with that caveat—not a settled verdict on every unit or viewing condition. Tom’s Guide’s review discusses the test and the display feature.
How good is the S26 Ultra camera?
In Tom’s Guide’s review, the most convincing camera improvements were stronger low-light performance and long-range zoom. Those strengths matter if you often photograph distant subjects or shoot in dim settings. The review also found weaker macro detail than on the iPhone 17 Pro Max in its comparison and occasional oversaturated color. These are observations from that comparison, not a guarantee that every photo will look that way.

The 200 MP main sensor specification alone does not tell you how a camera performs in everyday use. Consider the kinds of photos you take: the cited review favors zoom and low-light use cases, while macro detail and color rendering are potential compromises.

Samsung lists a 5,000 mAh battery and advertises up to 31 hours of video playback. Tom’s Guide measured 16 hours and 10 minutes in its 2026 battery test, which used 5G web browsing at 150 nits. These numbers describe different things—a manufacturer video-playback claim and a publication’s controlled browsing test—and should not be compared as if they were the same workload. Tom’s Guide characterized battery life as solid, while its test result trailed the iPhone 17 Pro Max and OnePlus 15.

In Tom’s Guide’s 2026 charging test, the S26 Ultra reached 77% after 30 minutes. The publication found charging improved over the S25 Ultra in its test. Your charging time can vary with the charger, cable, temperature, and usage; the test result is not a promise for every setup.
Price and value depend on when and where you buy
US pricing is especially date-sensitive. Samsung’s US product page advertises the S26 Ultra from $1,299.99 before trade-in, while a Tom’s Guide report updated October 1, 2026 says the US starting price rose to $1,399 from $1,299. These sources do not agree, and offers or listings can change. Check the live price and distinguish the standard price from trade-in or other conditional discounts before deciding.

For context only, TechRadar recorded March 2026 launch prices for the base configuration of $1,299.99 in the US, £1,279 in the UK, and AU$2,199 in Australia. Those are dated launch figures, not a current price comparison across markets. Storage tier, retailer, and local offers can change the total cost.
What are the main trade-offs?
- Large, heavy design: At 214 g and 7.9 mm thick, it may be uncomfortable if you prefer a smaller phone. Tom’s Guide also noted a pronounced camera bump that can make the phone wobble on a flat table.
- No built-in Qi2 magnets: Tom’s Guide reports that magnetic accessories require a compatible case. If you rely on magnetic mounting or charging accessories, include that case in your setup and budget.
- Battery is good, not class-leading in the cited test: Tom’s Guide’s specified browsing result trailed two rivals, even as it found the phone’s endurance solid overall.
- Camera compromises: Zoom and low-light performance stood out in the review, while macro detail and occasional oversaturation were less convincing.
- Durability evidence is limited: Tom’s Guide reported a scratch during its short review period. That is an individual observation, not a durability test or proof of a widespread weakness.
Is the S26 Ultra worth it over the S25 Ultra?
For most S25 Ultra owners, the S26 Ultra looks like an incremental upgrade rather than a reason to replace a working phone automatically; TechRadar characterized it that way in its March 2026 review. The case for upgrading is strongest if you specifically want the configurable Privacy Display, the reviewed low-light and zoom improvements, or faster charging. Before switching, compare the actual upgrade cost—including trade-in value—with how often you will use those changes. The HDR brightness measurement cited above is not a clear display-generation advantage, and the battery test is not a standout reason by itself.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- 6.8" Dynamic AMOLED 2X QHD+ display with 1–120 Hz adaptive refresh rate, up to ~1750 nits brightness, HDR10+ support, and ultra-smooth responsiveness for gaming and scrolling.
Who should buy the Galaxy S26 Ultra?
It is a strong fit if you:
- Will use the integrated S Pen for notes, markup, or other stylus tasks.
- Want a built-in, configurable privacy feature for selected apps or notification pop-ups.
- Value long-range zoom and improved low-light results as described in the cited review.
- Prefer a large, high-resolution screen and are comfortable with the phone’s size and weight.
- Want a premium Android phone and will benefit from its performance and storage options.
Consider another phone or keep your current one if you:
- Own a recent Ultra and do not need the S26’s particular privacy, camera, or charging changes.
- Prioritize the longest possible battery life over the broader feature set.
- Do not need a stylus, privacy controls, or long-range zoom and would mainly be paying for unused extras.
- Want built-in Qi2 magnets or a less prominent camera bump.
- Prefer a smaller, lighter phone or place a high priority on macro photography.
How to make the buying decision
- Check the real price: Compare the current listing in your country with the storage tier you want. Treat trade-in offers as conditional, and do not assume a listed starting price applies to every configuration.
- Match the features to your habits: Decide whether you will regularly use the S Pen, Privacy Display, zoom, and large screen. If not, a less expensive model may be better value.
- Compare your upgrade alternatives: If you own an S25 Ultra, weigh the exact trade-in cost against the specific improvements you care about. If choosing among flagships, compare battery results only when the test methods match.
- Account for accessories: If magnetic accessories matter to you, check that a case supports your intended setup. Confirm charger compatibility and what is included in the box for your region before buying a separate charger.
