Not on the evidence available. The SaaSpocalypse describes a real shift in software economics: AI agents could reduce reliance on some seat-based applications, while companies continue to invest in software, platforms and AI. But a forecast of spending exposed to disruption is not proof that the money has already left software budgets. Current indicators point to pressure and change, not a demonstrated market-wide collapse.
What “at risk” means—and what it does not
In July 2026, Gartner forecast that up to $234 billion in enterprise application spending could be exposed to “agentic arbitrage” through 2030—roughly 20% of enterprise application SaaS spending by 2030. The forecast concerns spending exposed to a possible change in how work gets done; it is not a tally of canceled contracts, realized cuts or money already removed from budgets. Gartner’s forecast describes agents completing tasks across multiple systems, potentially reducing the need for people to navigate several traditional software interfaces.
That creates a specific risk for products whose value depends heavily on charging for each user seat or providing a standalone interface. It does not mean every software function disappears. Gartner also points to potential opportunities in services and platforms that coordinate cross-domain workflows or deliver outcomes. The likely disruption is uneven: an application may lose some seats, face pressure to change its pricing, or become more valuable as part of a broader workflow.

What the current indicators actually show
The available figures measure different things: a forward-looking exposure forecast, company operating benchmarks, worldwide market growth and executives’ stated investment or purchasing intentions. They should not be combined into a single software-spending trend.

| Evidence | Reported result | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Gartner, 2026 | Up to $234 billion, or roughly 20% of enterprise application SaaS spending by 2030, exposed to agentic arbitrage | A forecast of potential exposure through 2030, not realized cuts. Source |
| HSBC Innovation Banking UK, 2026 report | In its subset of 50 UK enterprise software companies tracked across 2023–2025, 2025 ARR growth was 22%, compared with a 29% median growth rate in 2024 | Company-level annual recurring revenue growth in a UK sample, not global buyer spending. Source |
| HSBC Innovation Banking UK, 2026 report | The sample’s churn was 13% in 2025 versus 16% in 2023 | A company operating metric across the report’s sample and years, not a measure of all enterprise software cancellations. Source |
| HSBC Innovation Banking UK, 2026 report | Mean burn multiple was 1.1x in 2025 versus 1.9x in 2024 | A capital-efficiency metric for the studied companies, not a direct measure of customer budgets. Source |
| IDC, 2026 | The worldwide enterprise application market approached $700 billion, with blended growth near 13% through the first half of 2026 | A worldwide market-growth estimate, not proof that every application category grew. Source |
| IDC, 2026 SaaS & Agent Path and CX Path studies, as reported by IDC | 32.8% of surveyed companies said they would pay at least 10% more for embedded AI agents; 18% said they would pay a premium of 30% or more | Stated willingness to pay, not completed purchases or confirmed price increases. Source |
| PwC US, September 2026 | 55% of 193 surveyed US software and technology executives reported significant investment in platform capabilities | Responses from senior executives at US firms with at least $500 million in annual revenue, not a measure of all businesses’ spending. Source |
HSBC’s figures suggest slower ARR growth alongside lower churn and improved capital efficiency in its UK sample. They do not show that AI caused those changes, or establish whether enterprise software budgets are rising or falling worldwide. Similarly, IDC’s market estimate indicates continued expansion overall through the first half of 2026, but its report says growth varies across application categories.
Why software can be disrupted while spending continues
Agents can change how people use applications
If an agent can carry out a task across several systems, a worker may need fewer interfaces or accounts to complete it. That can challenge per-seat economics even if the underlying work still depends on software. The effect may show up as a buyer reducing licenses, negotiating a different contract, or shifting spending to an agent or platform rather than abandoning the workflow.

Applications still provide data, control and process infrastructure
IDC argues that enterprise applications remain systems of record, workflow orchestrators, governance frameworks and integration layers. In that view, agents still need structured, governed data and reliable processes to act usefully. This is IDC’s analysis, not a settled guarantee that every incumbent application will retain its position; it helps explain why replacing an interface does not necessarily replace the software underneath it. IDC’s discussion also emphasizes variation among application markets.

Seat-based contracts are only one way to pay for software. Usage or consumption pricing may better fit variable workloads, while outcome-based arrangements link charges to delivered results. Platform and implementation spending can also rise as companies integrate AI into existing workflows. These changes can reduce spend on one product while increasing it elsewhere; vendor revenue, license counts and total buyer spend are related but not interchangeable measures.

PwC’s survey provides one indication of platform investment among large US software and technology companies, while IDC’s premium figures reflect respondents’ intentions about embedded agents. Neither establishes that buyers have already shifted a particular amount of money from standalone SaaS to platforms or AI.
How to read the “SaaSpocalypse” claims
- “A large share of spend is at risk” refers to Gartner’s forecast exposure through 2030; it is not a report of present-day budget reductions.
- “SaaS growth is slowing” can describe the HSBC sample’s ARR growth comparison, but that UK company benchmark is not a worldwide spending series.
- “The enterprise application market is growing” reflects IDC’s estimate for the worldwide market through the first half of 2026; it does not mean every category or vendor is growing.
- “Buyers will pay more for AI” overstates IDC’s survey if presented as actual purchases. The reported percentages capture stated willingness to pay.
There is no single global measure in these sources that directly establishes whether realized total enterprise software spending is falling. The evidence instead points to a market where some established pricing and interface models face pressure while other software, AI and platform opportunities attract investment. Gartner’s July 31, 2026 public abstract likewise characterizes “SaaSpocalypse” as exaggerating extinction risk while signaling a change in software’s direction; the abstract does not support conclusions beyond that summary. What buyers and software vendors should do with the signal
For software buyers
Use renewals to test whether the contract still matches actual usage and value. Review utilization, pricing predictability and the terms for AI features, then ask whether those features improve a workflow enough to justify their cost. IDC recommends using renewal leverage to seek transparent, predictable pricing; a promised AI capability alone does not establish a return.

The evidence favors demonstrating value in workflows rather than assuming that users or seats will grow indefinitely. Vendors may need to show where embedded AI improves outcomes, make pricing fit how customers consume the product, and explain the role their platform plays in data, governance or integration. Those are strategic pressures, not a universal formula: the right response depends on the product category and customer use case.
