The Prusa CORE One+ INDX is worth considering if you regularly print with several materials or colors and value keeping separate tools ready. Its toolchanger promises less purge waste than a conventional single-nozzle multicolor workflow, but the trade-offs are a high purchase price, a smaller installed build area and a more involved setup. It is not an automatic upgrade for every CORE One+ owner.

What the CORE One+ INDX changes

The INDX is a toolchanging system developed by Bondtech with Prusa. One active smart head works with up to eight passive toolheads; induction heats the nozzle on the tool in use. Prusa describes it as “a toolchanger that turns your CORE One+ into an 8-material machine.” That means the printer can have multiple materials or colors ready without routing each one through a single nozzle. It does not mean eight materials are printed simultaneously.

Prusa lists tool swaps at approximately 12–16 seconds and purge waste at approximately 13 mg per swap. These are manufacturer figures, not independent guarantees; total print time also depends on the model, settings and how often tools must change. The basic attraction is straightforward: changing tools can avoid some of the purge associated with switching filaments through one nozzle, while allowing each tool to have its own filament loaded.

For a practical comparison with a filament-switching system or another toolchanger, look beyond the advertised swap time. Compare how many materials stay ready, waste and purge behavior, total time including nozzle heating, usable build volume, material and nozzle options, installed price, upgrade path and setup effort. Prusa publishes comparisons with the Snapmaker U1 and Bambu Lab X2D, but those are manufacturer comparisons and should be read as such.

How much does it cost?

Prusa’s product page displayed four US configurations when accessed October 7, 2026. The listed prices span $1,699 to $2,249; Prusa says final pricing and delivery are calculated at checkout, and totals can change with region and add-ons. Check the live page before ordering.

Configuration Displayed US price
Four tools, kit $1,699
Eight tools, kit $1,949
Four tools, assembled printer $1,999
Eight tools, assembled printer $2,249

Prusa’s CORE One+ INDX product page is the relevant place to confirm current options and checkout totals. The assembled printer is the simpler route if you do not want to convert a machine yourself. A kit may appeal to buyers comfortable with assembly, but the conversion experience described in an early review should not be mistaken for the installation time of an assembled purchase.

What you give up: build area and setup time

With INDX installed, Prusa lists a build volume of 248 × 205 × 270 mm. Tom’s Hardware says that is 2 mm less in X and 15 mm less in Y than the CORE One+. Check the dimensions of your usual parts before buying: the reduction may be immaterial for small objects but can rule out a design that previously fit.

Installation complexity is another real cost, especially for owners converting an existing printer. In Tom’s Hardware’s account of an early Founder’s Edition conversion, the reviewer spent most of a weekend configuring the system, while Prusa’s estimate was five to six hours. That is one reviewer’s experience with an early conversion, not a universal estimate for every kit or a description of the assembled printer. It does show why buyers should treat the upgrade path as more than a simple accessory swap.

Print results: promising, but one comparison is not a guarantee

In one comparison, Tom’s Hardware reported that its test print ran nearly nine hours faster on INDX than on a Bambu Lab H2C, used 83.58 g less material waste excluding supports, and used three more colors. Those results apply to that review’s particular model and settings. They do not establish that INDX will be faster or produce less waste on every job.

TechRadar reported very good multicolor print quality in its review, alongside a couple of misprints during initial runs that the reviewer later resolved while learning the system. Those observations are useful context, but they are not a defect-rate estimate or evidence about long-term reliability. The available reviews do not establish representative failure rates, production uptime or long-term customer-support outcomes.

Materials and nozzle options

Prusa lists a maximum nozzle temperature of 300 °C, 1.75 mm filament and nozzle options from 0.25 to 1.0 mm. Its compatibility list includes PLA, PETG, ASA, ABS, PC, PA, TPU, PVA and BVOH, with limitations for abrasive materials. These are manufacturer compatibility claims, not independently tested results for every filament or tool combination. If you print abrasive filament, confirm the specific limitations and suitable hardware before relying on it.

Should you buy it or upgrade?

It makes sense if

  • You frequently print multicolor or multi-material models and want several tools loaded and ready.
  • Reducing purge waste matters for your workload, and the system’s added cost is justified by how often you use that capability.
  • Your parts fit within the listed installed build volume.
  • You are comfortable with either the conversion work of a kit or the higher displayed price of an assembled configuration.

It is a weaker fit if

  • You mostly print single-material parts, so multiple ready tools would rarely help.
  • You regularly use nearly all of the CORE One+ build area, particularly the Y dimension.
  • You want an effortless upgrade and are considering a kit without allowing for configuration and installation work.
  • You need proven long-term reliability or a representative failure rate before committing; the cited reviews do not establish those outcomes.

For an existing CORE One+ owner, the key question is whether multi-tool printing solves a recurring problem—not simply whether the upgrade is possible. Prusa announced on August 20, 2026 that standard conversion kits had begun shipping and complete Gen 2 INDX printers were open for orders in four configurations. Stock and delivery can change; consult Prusa’s shipping and ordering announcement and the live product page for current availability.

Verdict

The CORE One+ INDX is a compelling, specialized toolchanger rather than a universally better CORE One+. Its multi-tool approach can make color and material changes more practical, and one independent comparison showed notable time and waste savings. But the price, reduced installed build volume and configuration burden make it most appealing to frequent multicolor or multi-material users who have checked that their parts fit. If those jobs are occasional, the added capability may not justify the cost and complexity.
