ecobee ended server connectivity for its original residential Smart Thermostat, model EB-STAT-02, on July 31, 2024. That cutoff concerns the thermostat’s connection to ecobee’s servers; the available notice does not establish that the device necessarily stops controlling heating or cooling locally. It also does not announce an end of support for every ecobee thermostat.
Which ecobee thermostat lost server connectivity?
ecobee’s legacy-products notice names the ecobee Smart Thermostat (EB-STAT-02) and, separately, its Energy Management System, EB-EMS-02. The regular end date for server connectivity was July 31, 2024. ecobee gave paying SmartBuildings customers an extension through August 28, 2024. The extension applied to those customers, not as a new general deadline for residential EB-STAT-02 owners. Read ecobee’s legacy-products FAQ.
This is a model-specific notice. It does not say that ecobee3, ecobee4, or all ecobee thermostats lost server access. ecobee’s current US lineup lists Smart Thermostat Essential, Enhanced, and Premium. See ecobee’s current US thermostat lineup.

The confirmed change is the end of server connectivity. The accessible notice does not provide enough detail to establish which local controls, schedules, app functions, or third-party connections continue to work after the cutoff. So it would be inaccurate to conclude from this notice alone that the thermostat is completely unusable—or to promise that any particular function still works.

For an answer specific to your thermostat and setup, consult ecobee’s complete legacy FAQ or contact ecobee Support. Do not assume that behavior is identical across installations or connected services.
Should you replace the original thermostat?
Replacement is an option if you want a currently listed ecobee thermostat and its connected features; the connectivity notice does not establish that every owner must replace the hardware. Before choosing a model, check your HVAC system and wiring with ecobee’s thermostat compatibility checker. Compatibility depends on the system and installation, so do not select a replacement solely by comparing features.

These are ecobee’s product descriptions, not independent test results. The company says Premium and Enhanced can save up to 26% on annual heating and cooling costs versus holding 72°F/22°C; its customer analysis was conducted in April 2021 and the claim is for North American customers. For Essential, ecobee claims up to 23% savings against the same hold comparison. Actual savings vary, and ecobee’s 2025 release notes variation by season, climate zone, and rate structure. Compare features only after checking compatibility, and confirm current pricing and availability directly with ecobee or a retailer; those details can change.
