Microsoft has not announced a 2027 retail release date for its next Xbox. It has announced Project Helix and said alpha versions of the hardware will go to developers beginning in 2027. The Xbox-branded handhelds that are currently concrete products are ASUS’s ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X—not a confirmed Microsoft-made handheld launching this year.
What Microsoft has actually confirmed about Project Helix
Microsoft announced Project Helix as its next-generation Xbox hardware platform. The company says it is designed to play Xbox console games and PC games. That is a meaningful description of the platform’s direction, but it is not a final specification sheet or a promise that every PC game will work on the system.
Xbox executive Jason Ronald said, “We plan to ship alpha versions of the hardware to developers beginning in 2027.” The wording matters: developer alpha hardware is an early development milestone, not a consumer launch announcement. Microsoft has not provided a retail date, consumer price, or final specifications in the announcement.

A 2027 retail launch is possible, but it is not confirmed. In 2025, AMD CEO Lisa Su was reported as saying that development of Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox silicon was progressing well to support a launch in 2027. That reported roadmap signal is consistent with a possible 2027 target, but neither Microsoft nor AMD has announced a consumer release window.

So the most accurate answer is: Project Helix developer alpha hardware is planned for 2027; a 2027 retail release remains unconfirmed. Until Microsoft gives a consumer launch date, treat “Xbox launches in 2027” as a report or expectation, not a scheduled date.
Is Microsoft releasing an Xbox handheld this year?
The announced Xbox-branded handheld is ASUS’s ROG Xbox Ally line, including the Ally X. These are partner devices developed by ASUS, not evidence that Microsoft is releasing a first-party handheld this year. They are Windows gaming handheld PCs, which is a different product model from a dedicated Xbox console.

Windows Central reported that Microsoft’s internal first-party handheld effort had been sidelined while teams focused on Windows 11 handheld optimization and the ASUS partner project known internally as Kennan. The report said Microsoft still wanted to make a first-party handheld in the future, but it did not establish a consumer launch date. On the available evidence, “a Microsoft-made Xbox handheld is coming this year” should not be presented as confirmed.

| Question | ROG Xbox Ally / Ally X | Project Helix |
|---|---|---|
| Who is making it? | ASUS partner handhelds. | Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox hardware platform. |
| What kind of system is it? | A Windows gaming handheld PC. | A platform Microsoft says is designed to play Xbox console and PC games; final system details are not stated in Microsoft’s announcement. |
| What availability is established? | The Ally and Ally X are the concrete Xbox-branded handheld products identified in the available reporting. Specific availability by market is not stated here. | Alpha hardware is planned to go to developers beginning in 2027; a consumer release date is not stated by Microsoft. |
| What performance should buyers expect? | Not stated in the information available for this comparison. | Not stated in Microsoft’s announcement; final specifications are unknown. |
| How portable is it? | Designed as a handheld PC; exact comparative dimensions or battery-life figures are not stated here. | Final form factor and portability are not stated. |

| What about backwards compatibility? | Not stated in the information available for this comparison. | Not stated in Microsoft’s announcement. |
The practical distinction is clearer than any performance comparison: the ASUS devices are partner-made Windows handheld PCs, while Project Helix is Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox platform and is still at a developer-hardware milestone. The available statements do not support a reliable head-to-head judgment about speed, battery life, price, or compatibility.

Should you buy a ROG Xbox Ally or wait for Project Helix?
Consider the Ally line if you want a handheld PC sooner
The Ally and Ally X are the relevant choice if you want the ASUS partner handheld form factor rather than waiting for Project Helix. Before buying, check the exact model’s price and specifications in your market, then confirm that its Windows-PC software model and portability fit the games and use you have in mind. The available information here does not establish a price or model-by-model performance comparison.
Wait if you specifically want Microsoft’s next Xbox platform
Waiting makes more sense if your priority is Project Helix itself, or if you want Microsoft to disclose its final hardware, price, compatibility details, and retail timing before you commit. The trade-off is uncertainty: Microsoft has not announced when consumers can buy it, and the developer alpha milestone does not guarantee a particular retail date.

Do not buy on the assumption that a first-party handheld is imminent
If your decision depends on a Microsoft-made handheld arriving this year, the available reporting does not support treating that as a firm plan. The reported sidelining of Microsoft’s internal effort and the ASUS partnership point to a different near-term path, but they do not establish whether or when Microsoft might later ship its own device.
What remains unknown about Project Helix
Microsoft’s announcement establishes the platform name, its stated ability to play Xbox console and PC games, and the plan to begin shipping alpha hardware to developers in 2027. It does not establish:

- A consumer launch date or confirmation of a 2027 retail release.
- Consumer pricing or a final specification sheet.
- The final size, design, or portability of the system.
- Detailed compatibility rules for existing Xbox games or PC games.
- Whether Microsoft will release a first-party handheld, or when.
Those unanswered points are why a 2027 developer milestone should not be treated as a buying date. The next useful confirmation for consumers would be a Microsoft announcement of retail timing and final product details.
