Some augmented- and virtual-reality tools are already being used or studied for medical purposes, but a routine, fully virtual “metaverse doctor’s office” is not established. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) describes applications such as image overlays for surgical guidance, virtual-reality treatment for PTSD, and simulated rehabilitation. Those specific uses are different from the broader vision of patients receiving ordinary care in a shared virtual world.

What does “MetaHealth” mean in this context?

“MetaHealth” is not a single standard name for a medical technology. The term is also used by unrelated organizations, including MetaHealth Insights and Innovations, Inc., a Philippine health technology assessment and health economics consultancy. That organization should not be confused with medical uses of the metaverse, augmented reality (AR), or virtual reality (VR).

Here, “metaverse in healthcare” means immersive or networked digital environments used for activities such as treatment, rehabilitation, medical training, or remote interaction. The term can describe very different technologies, so a claim about one headset, app, or clinical use does not establish that all “metaverse healthcare” works the same way.

How are AR and VR different in medical care?

Technology What the person sees Medical example described by the FDA
Augmented reality (AR) Digital information or imagery layered over a view of the real world. An AR system can overlay medical images onto a patient during an operation to help guide a surgeon’s technique.
Virtual reality (VR) An immersive simulated environment replaces the user’s ordinary view. A VR system may be used to treat PTSD in army veterans or to simulate real-life situations during rehabilitation.

These are examples of medical-device applications described on the FDA’s “Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality in Medical Devices” page. They do not mean that every consumer headset or app is a medical device, or that a device is suitable for every patient or condition.

Clinician-facing applications

  • Surgical planning and procedures: AR can present medical images in a clinician’s view, while immersive tools may support planning or procedural workflows. The FDA identifies surgery planning and procedures among medical XR domains.
  • Education and training: Immersive simulations can represent clinical situations for learning. A 2026 systematic review abstract included medical education among the areas represented in its literature sample.

Patient-facing applications

  • Mental health: The FDA gives VR treatment for PTSD in army veterans as an example and lists mental health among the domains where medical XR may be used.
  • Rehabilitation: VR may simulate real-life situations for people with disability after stroke or other medical conditions, providing a virtual setting for rehabilitation exercises.
  • Pain management and other areas: The FDA also lists pain management, neurological disorders, ophthalmic diagnostics, telemedicine, and virtual care as medical XR domains. A domain appearing on that list indicates an area of potential use, not proof that a particular product is effective for a specific patient.

How strong is the evidence for a “metaverse clinic”?

The evidence base for metaverse-in-medicine applications remains developing. A systematic review by Marsa Gholamzadeh and colleagues, published in the International Journal of Telemedicine and Applications in 2026, examined 46 studies published from 2022 through 2024. Its abstract concluded that applications were mainly at the system-design and feasibility stages rather than demonstrating clinical effectiveness.

The review’s counts describe the studies it included; they are not measures of how common a technology is in clinics, market shares, or proof that an intervention works:

Rehabilitation 6 13.04%
Virtual worlds (most common single type) 23 50.00%
Augmented reality (AR) 8 17.39%
Mirror worlds 4 8.70%

Because the review covers studies published only through 2024, its counts do not describe every deployment or study in 2026. They do, however, caution against treating an ambitious virtual-clinic concept as equivalent to an established, outcome-tested care pathway.

Could a virtual appointment replace an office visit?

Remote care is not the same thing as immersive care. A video appointment or a clinician’s telehealth visit may take place without a virtual world or headset. The FDA’s September 2024 final guidance on decentralized clinical trials describes trial activities outside traditional sites, including telehealth visits, in-home visits by remote trial personnel, and visits with local providers. This is evidence that some clinical-trial activities can be conducted remotely; it is not evidence that metaverse clinics are routine.

A 2025 conceptual review discussed possible metaverse-related trial workflows such as immersive consent, virtual subject monitoring, remote diary management, and adverse-event reporting. These are proposals discussed in a conceptual review, not FDA endorsement or proof that such workflows are commonly deployed.

What risks and practical limits should patients consider?

Whether immersive technology makes sense depends on the intended medical use, the individual patient, and the care setting. The FDA identifies potential risks and concerns including:

  • Cybersickness and physical discomfort: Immersive experiences may cause symptoms such as motion-related discomfort; wearing a device can also create neck strain.
  • Privacy and cybersecurity: Health-related data and connected systems raise questions about how information is collected, stored, protected, and shared.
  • Distraction in clinical settings: A device that changes what a clinician sees or demands attention may create risks in an operating room or other high-stakes environment.
  • Uncertain effects for vulnerable groups: Effects may not be established for every age group, condition, or patient population.
  • Access and equity: Device cost, accessibility, connectivity, and other barriers could worsen disparities if an immersive option becomes a gatekeeper for care.

Patients should ask what condition the technology is intended to address, what evidence supports that use, what alternatives are available, and how the clinician will assess whether it is safe and appropriate for them. A consumer VR headset should not be assumed to be authorized or suitable for medical treatment merely because VR has medical applications.

What would make immersive care credible as routine medicine?

A convincing clinical service needs more than a realistic virtual room. For a particular use, patients and clinicians need evidence that the tool is safe, performs its intended function, and provides a meaningful benefit compared with appropriate alternatives. They also need a workable plan for privacy, accessibility, staff training, and what happens if the technology fails or a patient needs in-person assessment.

Until those conditions are established for a particular product and indication, it is more accurate to think of medical AR and VR as specific tools with potential uses—not as a replacement for the doctor’s office or a single, fully realized healthcare metaverse.
