Yes, a Lenovo Chromebook Flex 5 can be a good laptop for school, web browsing, documents, video calls, and streaming—if the exact configuration suits your needs and the price reflects its age and condition. Its touchscreen and 360-degree hinge make it more flexible than a conventional Chromebook, but performance, screen quality, and battery life vary by model. It runs ChromeOS, not Windows, so check that your essential apps and workflows work on ChromeOS before buying.

First, confirm which Flex 5 you are considering

“Lenovo Chromebook Flex 5” covers more than one generation and a range of configurations. Lenovo documents the 13IML05 and 13ITL6 platforms; the latter was offered with Celeron, Pentium, Core i3, and Core i5 processor options, along with varying memory, storage, and display choices. Check the listing, the system information, or the label on the underside of the computer rather than relying on the product name alone. See Lenovo’s 13IML05 specifications and 13ITL6 specifications.

Do not confuse these 13-inch Chromebook models with a Windows IdeaPad Flex 5 or a 14-inch Flex 5i Chromebook Plus. Similar names do not mean the same operating system, hardware, or capabilities.

What makes the Flex 5 useful?

A convertible touchscreen for different tasks

The touchscreen and 360-degree hinge let you use the computer as a laptop or fold it into tent, stand, and tablet-style positions. That can be convenient for typing assignments, reading or browsing with touch, or watching video without holding the screen upright like a standard laptop. The benefit is practical if you will actually use those positions; it does not change the software compatibility limits of ChromeOS.

Ports and wireless features on documented models

Lenovo’s US product page lists two USB-C ports, a USB-A port, an audio jack, Wi-Fi 6, and Bluetooth 5.0 for the configuration on that page. Specifications can differ across generations and SKUs, and Lenovo notes that offers, availability, and specifications may change. Check the ports on the exact unit or its matching specification sheet before assuming it has a particular connection. Lenovo’s product page is specific to its listed product, not a guarantee for every Flex 5.

How good is performance, and what does ChromeOS support?

A Core i3 or Core i5 configuration with more memory is the safer bet for keeping many tabs open or handling heavier ChromeOS workloads than a lower-tier configuration. That is a judgment based on the documented processor range, not a benchmark comparison. The Flex 5 is best suited to work that fits ChromeOS; before buying, check whether your required desktop applications, school tools, peripherals, or specialized workflows are supported in the way you need. The available specifications and reviews do not establish universal compatibility.

Independent reviews of their particular units often spoke positively about the keyboard and the design or value for the models’ era. Those observations are not a guarantee about every configuration or an assessment of a unit’s current condition. Engadget also noted that audio could sound muffled with the tested computer in stand mode, a position-specific observation rather than a claim about all listening use. Read the configuration-specific impressions in Android Central’s review, Engadget’s review, and Chrome Unboxed’s review.

How does the screen vary?

The screen is not uniform across configurations. For the 13ITL6, Lenovo lists an FHD (1920 × 1080) IPS touch panel option rated at 250 nits and 45% NTSC, as well as an OLED option on some configurations. Do not assume an individual Flex 5 has OLED, or that every screen has the same brightness or color characteristics. Check the panel type in the listing and match it to the exact model specification before paying extra for a claimed screen upgrade.

How long does the battery last?

Battery figures depend on the source and conditions. Lenovo lists a 51 Wh battery for the 13ITL6 platform and gives an “up to 10 hours” maximum-style claim for documented product material. Lenovo cautions that actual runtime varies with configuration, workload, wireless use, power settings, screen brightness, and other factors; an older battery may also have lost capacity.

In a different kind of evidence, Laptop Mag recorded 7 hours and 20 minutes in its 2020 review of its Flex 5 unit during continuous web surfing at 150 nits. That is a result for that review unit and test, not a promise for another model or a used machine. The manufacturer figure and review result are not directly comparable unless their configuration, workload, brightness, and battery condition align. Laptop Mag’s test details and Lenovo’s 13ITL6 specification sheet provide the context for those figures.

For a used unit, ask for a recent battery-health check or a runtime demonstration under your expected workload. Neither an original “up to” figure nor a test of a different review unit establishes how long that particular computer will last between charges.

Who should buy one, and who should look elsewhere?

  • A good fit: students and general users who mainly use browser-based tools, documents, video calls, and streaming, and who value a touchscreen convertible.
  • Consider a stronger configuration: anyone who regularly keeps many tabs open or expects heavier ChromeOS multitasking; compare the processor and memory rather than shopping by the Flex 5 name alone.
  • Look elsewhere if necessary: users whose work depends on Windows-only desktop software or another workflow that does not function suitably on ChromeOS.
  • Inspect carefully before buying used: an older Flex 5’s battery, screen, keyboard, hinge, ports, and overall condition matter as much as its original specifications.

What to check before buying a used or refurbished Flex 5

  1. Identify the exact model and generation. Confirm whether it is a 13IML05, 13ITL6, or another product, and make sure it is a Chromebook rather than a similarly named Windows Flex 5.
  2. Verify the configuration. Check processor, RAM, storage, and display panel against the listing and the matching Lenovo specification sheet. Do not infer OLED or a higher-tier processor from the family name.
  3. Test the actual unit. Check battery condition and runtime, screen and touch response, keyboard, hinge positions, audio, and each port you expect to use.
  4. Check what is included and what recourse you have. Confirm charger compatibility, physical condition, return terms, and warranty coverage with the seller. Lenovo lists a 45 W USB-C Power Delivery adapter for the documented 13ITL6 platform.
  5. Compare the complete deal. Weigh the exact specs, battery condition, screen, condition, and seller protections against the current price. A faster processor alone does not make a unit the better buy if its battery or screen is substantially worse.
