Yes—if you enjoy a story-led fantasy adventure built around exploration, puzzle-filled dungeons, combat, and memorable music. The original game’s late-1990s 3D presentation shows its age, but its central adventure still has plenty to offer. If you want a more modern presentation, Nintendo has listed a Switch 2 remake for November 5, 2026; otherwise, the N64 version is an option now through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.
What makes Ocarina of Time worth trying?
Link’s quest takes him across Hyrule and through time as he confronts Ganondorf. Exploration, weapons and items, boss battles, and puzzles drive the adventure, rather than a single uninterrupted story sequence. Nintendo’s game description outlines those core elements.

The ocarina is more than a musical flourish: learning songs helps open paths and change the time of day. That makes music part of navigation and progression as well as the game’s atmosphere. Nintendo describes this mechanic on its Switch 2 game page.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteA retrospective Nintendo Life review praises the dungeons, exploration, atmosphere, and music, while noting that the visuals can feel dated. That is a critical judgment, not a guarantee that every new player will enjoy the game. The main question is whether a classic adventure structure appeals to you enough to look past older 3D visuals and design conventions.

Which version should a first-time player choose?
| Version | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| N64 version through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack | You want to play before the Switch 2 remake’s listed release date, or already have the membership. | Nintendo says access to N64 Classics requires an active Expansion Pack membership and that it has no plans to sell those games separately. Continued access depends on keeping the membership active. See Nintendo’s Nintendo Classics FAQ. |
| Switch 2 remake | You prefer updated presentation and controls and can wait until its listed release. | Nintendo’s US listing gives a release date of November 5, 2026, and advertises overhauled visuals, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, orchestral music, enhanced controls, and modern camera movements. These are announced product features, not independent gameplay impressions. The listing also specifies a physical edition. See Nintendo’s US product page. |
| Ocarina of Time 3D for Nintendo 3DS | You own or can access the 3DS version. | Nintendo describes refined gameplay, overhauled 3D visuals, a touch-screen inventory, and motion controls on its game page. Current retail availability is not established here. |
Choose based on the presentation and access you want, not on a need to complete another Zelda game first: the official descriptions establish a self-contained quest, but do not settle a definitive series play order. Availability can differ by region, so check Nintendo’s local catalogue and membership terms before relying on a particular option.
Is the original version too dated?
It can look old beside current games. Nintendo Life points to jagged polygons, rough textures, and lighting that do not meet modern visual expectations, even while judging the game enjoyable overall. The N64 version makes the most sense if you are comfortable with older 3D graphics and want to start now; the 3DS edition offers a visual update if you have access to that hardware, and the announced Switch 2 remake is aimed at players who want more extensively modernized presentation.

As of October 7, 2026, Nintendo lists the remake for release on November 5, 2026. Its US page advertises updated visuals, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, orchestral music, enhanced controls, modern camera movements, and a physical edition. Nintendo’s UK page also describes songs that open paths and change the time of day, and lists ZELDA NOTES. These are Nintendo’s announced features; they should not be treated as hands-on findings or as confirmation that every version or region has identical features.

If you are deciding whether to play before release or wait, the trade-off is straightforward: the N64 Classics version provides access now for eligible members, while the remake is the option to consider if its promised presentation and controls matter more to you. Nintendo’s listed date is a product detail, not evidence of how the remake will feel to play.
