The GL.iNet Slate 7 (GL-BE3600) is a compact, dual-band Wi-Fi 7 travel router with two 2.5G Ethernet ports, a touchscreen, and built-in VPN client and server options. It is worth considering if you want to share a hotel or other wired connection across your devices, need faster wired ports than most small travel setups provide, or want router-level VPN controls. It is not a battery-powered hotspot, and its headline Wi-Fi rates are rated maxima—not speeds you should expect from a hotel connection.
What the Slate 7 is—and what it is not
GL.iNet markets the Slate 7, model GL-BE3600, as a portable dual-band Wi-Fi 7 router. It creates a familiar local network for your devices by connecting to an upstream network, such as a wired connection or another Wi-Fi network. Its USB-C port is for power; the product documentation does not establish that the router has an internal battery. You will need a suitable power source when using it. GL.iNet’s product page lists USB-C PD input profiles of 5V/3A, 9V/3A, or 12V/2.5A.
In other words, it is a router for extending or sharing an available connection, not a standalone cellular hotspot. The sources do not establish universal compatibility with hotel captive portals, where a guest may have to accept terms or sign in before internet access works. Whether it works smoothly at a particular property depends on that network’s access process and configuration.

The following are manufacturer specifications, not independently reproduced measurements. GL.iNet’s product listing describes the Slate 7 as a 3600 Mbps-class router, combining rated maximum link rates of 688 Mbps on 2.4GHz and 2882 Mbps on 5GHz. The router has two 2.5G Ethernet ports—one WAN and one LAN—plus USB 3.0, 1GB of DDR4 memory, and 512MB of NAND storage. GL.iNet lists its dimensions as 130 × 91 × 34 mm and weight as 295 g. See GL.iNet’s specifications and travel-router feature listing.

The two Ethernet ports stand out for a travel router: one can connect the router to a wired upstream network while the other provides a wired connection to a device. The product listing identifies their WAN and LAN roles; it does not establish that the LAN port is freely configurable, so do not assume you can change those roles without checking the current hardware and configuration documentation.
The touchscreen is for more than passive status information. GL.iNet says it supports QR-code Wi-Fi sharing, status and speed monitoring, VPN toggling, and changing VPN provider. That can make common adjustments easier when you do not want to open a router’s web interface, though the listing’s feature descriptions are vendor claims.

To deal with this situation, please reconnect your router to the wifi.)
How fast is the Slate 7, including with WireGuard?
Performance depends on which speed you mean: the router’s advertised wireless link rate, the internet connection reaching it, or the throughput after VPN encryption. Those figures are not interchangeable.
Advertised Wi-Fi rates
GL.iNet rates the 2.4GHz band at up to 688 Mbps and the 5GHz band at up to 2882 Mbps. The company says its figures come from local-network tests and that actual results vary with network configuration. These are rated maxima, not a promise of internet speed in a hotel room. Your upstream service, interference, distance, connected devices, and network conditions can all affect the result. GL.iNet’s product page provides the specifications and caveat.

VPN client throughput
For VPN client mode, GL.iNet lists up to 490 Mbps with WireGuard and up to 385 Mbps with OpenVPN DCO. These are manufacturer-reported local-network test figures; the company warns that performance differs in real-world use and is slower in VPN server mode. They should not be read as guaranteed throughput on every protocol configuration or internet connection. Check GL.iNet’s VPN performance figures.
In a review dated February 25, 2026, TechRadar reported around 2.1 Gbps observed wireless throughput on 5GHz and WireGuard results typically just above 500 Mbps in its testing. TechRadar also noted that OpenVPN throughput can be substantially lower. Those are that publication’s test observations, not results from a test conducted for this article or a guarantee for your setup. Read TechRadar’s review.

Is it a good travel router for your setup?
It makes sense if you need
- A small router that can share an available wired or Wi-Fi connection with several devices under one familiar network.
- Two 2.5G Ethernet ports for a wired upstream connection and a wired client.
- Wi-Fi 7 support and a touchscreen for quick status checks and certain router controls.
- VPN client or server capability, with throughput expectations matched to the protocol and operating mode.
Look elsewhere if you need
- A battery-powered hotspot or cellular service built into the router; the documented design uses USB-C power and does not establish an internal battery or cellular modem.
- A guarantee that a particular hotel’s captive portal will work without extra steps.
- A security product that protects every device automatically without configuration or ongoing updates. VPN capability does not, by itself, prove that public-network risks are eliminated.
GL.iNet lists OpenWrt 23.05, DNS encryption, Multi-Link Operation, and support for more than 30 VPN services. Treat these as vendor-listed features; VPN service access is not established as included with the router. As with any router VPN setup, protection depends on the configuration, VPN provider, DNS behavior, upstream network, device updates, and your threat model. GL.iNet’s travel-router listing describes its software and feature claims.
Setup: connect it to a network before relying on it away from home
GL.iNet’s guide and setup video cover first-time configuration, including Repeater Mode. The exact interface can change with firmware, so follow the current guide for the labels and sequence on your device rather than relying on an older video for current specifications. The guide is available as an official user-guide PDF; GL.iNet’s setup video is dated April 2, 2025.

- Power the router. Connect a USB-C power source that supports one of the input profiles documented by GL.iNet: 5V/3A, 9V/3A, or 12V/2.5A. Confirm what is included with the specific regional SKU if you need an adapter.
- Choose how it will reach the internet. Use a wired WAN connection where available, or configure a wireless repeater connection according to the current guide.
- Complete the upstream network’s access steps. If a hotel or public network requires a portal sign-in or terms acceptance, test that process on the router and connected devices; portal behavior is network-specific.
- Set up your local Wi-Fi and security choices. Use the current interface and guide to configure the network and, if wanted, a VPN client. Check DNS and VPN behavior rather than assuming every device is covered simply because a VPN option is present.
- Test before travel. Confirm that your devices connect, that any wired LAN use works for your intended device, and that the connection recovers as expected after restarting the router.
What the available comparisons can—and cannot—tell you
The Slate 7’s clearest differentiators are its Wi-Fi 7 generation, dual 2.5G Ethernet ports, and touchscreen controls. A meaningful comparison with another travel router should also account for its bands, independently measured VPN throughput by protocol and client/server mode, size and weight, power requirements, setup experience, firmware support, and current price and availability in your region.
There is no normalized head-to-head test or current competitor pricing established here, so the evidence does not support declaring the Slate 7 universally faster or better than other travel routers. Manufacturer-rated rates and a reviewer’s measured results should not be blended into a single performance range. An RTINGS review page also identifies the product, but the existence of a review alone does not establish a comparable result. RTINGS review page.
