No—the Samsung Galaxy S22 is water-resistant, not waterproof. The Galaxy S22, S22+, and S22 Ultra carry an IP68 rating. Samsung defines the test as immersion in up to 1.5 meters of freshwater for up to 30 minutes, but that controlled test is not a promise of safety in every real-world situation. Samsung specifically advises against beach or pool use.
What does the Galaxy S22’s IP68 rating mean?
Samsung says the Galaxy S22 family is IP68-certified. The rating indicates complete protection against dust ingress and a defined level of water resistance. For the water test, Samsung describes a stationary device submerged in freshwater at a depth of up to 1.5 meters for up to 30 minutes, under IEC 60529 test requirements. Samsung’s S22 support page and its water-resistance guide set out those limits.
Those figures describe test conditions, not a recommended underwater activity or a guarantee that every phone will survive that exposure. Samsung warns against deeper or longer immersion and high-pressure water. The IP68 label also does not mean the device is impervious to every liquid.
Can you take a Galaxy S22 in the shower, pool, or ocean?
Samsung does not advise using the Galaxy S22 at the beach or in a pool. Its stated IP68 test applies to freshwater, not saltwater, chlorinated pool water, soap, shampoo, oils, sunscreen, alcohol-containing liquids, or chemicals. Water pressure and movement also differ from the stationary test, so the rating is not a safe-use endorsement for swimming, diving, showering, or directing a stream of water at the phone.

Even a brief splash of another liquid is not equivalent to the freshwater test. Avoid deliberately exposing the phone to these conditions rather than relying on the IP68 rating to protect it.
Can the Galaxy S22 go underwater?
The rating means Samsung tested temporary freshwater immersion under specified conditions. It does not make underwater photography or routine submersion risk-free. Depth, duration, pressure, the phone’s condition, and the type of liquid all matter. Samsung also notes that water resistance is not permanent: it can weaken over time or with wear. A dropped, damaged, or repaired phone should not be assumed to have the same protection as a new device.

What should you do if your Galaxy S22 gets wet?
- Unplug it and remove accessories. Do not connect a charger or accessory while the phone or USB connector is wet. The phone can detect moisture and restrict USB charging to reduce the risk of a short circuit; Samsung explains the moisture alert and charging restriction.
- For clean freshwater exposure, wipe the phone dry. Use a clean, soft cloth and let the device and connector dry completely before charging.
- If it contacted a contaminant, rinse carefully. For saltwater, pool water, soap, oil, sunscreen, hand sanitizer, cosmetics, or another contaminant, Samsung’s US guidance recommends rinsing with clean water for 1 to 3 minutes, then wiping with a clean, soft cloth and drying completely. - Avoid aggressive drying or cleaning. Do not use a hair dryer, external heat, chemical cleaner, abrasive material, or compressed air.
- Arrange an inspection when exposure may have caused damage. Samsung recommends a service-center inspection after water exposure even if the phone appears to work normally. This is particularly important after immersion, contact with a contaminant, or any signs of malfunction.
How much protection should you expect from an older S22?
IP68 is a rating of the device design under test conditions, not a permanent seal guarantee for each handset. Samsung says water resistance may weaken over time or with wear. Because the protection of an individual phone depends on its condition, the original rating cannot establish that a used, dropped, damaged, or repaired S22 remains water-resistant.
