The Focal Mu-so Hekla looks and connects much like a soundbar, but Focal classifies it as an “Immersive All-in-One System”: one substantial cabinet designed for both music and home cinema. It has HDMI eARC, Dolby Atmos support, and a 15-driver array, but it does not come with separate rear speakers or a subwoofer. Whether it suits you depends on your space, your Atmos sources, and whether a one-box system justifies its premium price.

Is the Focal Mu-so Hekla a soundbar?

In practical terms, it can fill a soundbar role beneath a television: it is a single, long, low cabinet with HDMI eARC/CEC and upward- and side-firing drivers intended to create an immersive presentation. But “soundbar” is not Focal’s official category. The company calls it an “Immersive All-in-One System” for films, music, and games.

The distinction is useful rather than absolute. The Hekla combines TV audio and music playback in one enclosure, instead of requiring a conventional receiver and a collection of speakers. It is not, however, a complete set of separate home-cinema speakers concealed in a box: TechRadar’s review notes that rear speakers and a subwoofer are not included. The system does have an RCA subwoofer output if you want to connect an external subwoofer.

What is inside the one-box system?

Focal specifies 15 drivers: three 6-inch woofers, two 2.75-inch midrange drivers, two 1-inch tweeters, plus side- and top-firing full-range drivers. The company rates total amplification at 660 W, maximum sound pressure level at 108 dB at 1 m, and frequency response at 30 Hz–20 kHz (±3 dB), with a low-frequency point of 27 Hz at -6 dB. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. Focal’s product specifications

ULTIMEA 5.1CH Surround Sound Bar System with Dolby Atmos, Poseidon M60
  • Simplified 5.1ch Dolby Atmos Setup: Enjoy immersive 4D sound with real Dolby Atmos and 5.1-channel audio. Five built-in speakers, including two side-firing drivers, create wide surround without rear speakers. Precision DSP ensures <0.5 ms latency for smooth, theater-like sound. Setup takes less than 1 minute.
  • Voice Clarity Enhancement: VoiceMX technology uses advanced DSP algorithms to isolate and enhance vocal frequencies in real time. Dialogue remains crisp and easy to follow by separating speech from background effects and music, even at low volumes or during intense scenes.
  • 300W Output with 6-Driver System: Featuring five precision-tuned full-range drivers and a dedicated wired wooden subwoofer, the system delivers up to 300W of peak power for bold, room-filling sound. With a frequency response of 45 Hz–18 kHz and a maximum SPL of 99 dB, it reproduces everything from subtle nuances to explosive cinematic effects.
  • 18 mm High-Excursion Driver: Powered by BassMX technology, the wired wooden subwoofer features a 18 mm high-excursion driver, a 5.3L tuned cabinet, and a high-density magnetic circuit. This design delivers deeper, tighter bass with greater air displacement and enhanced low-frequency performance—bringing more realism to every scene.
  • HDMI eARC for True Dolby Atmos: HDMI eARC supports up to 37 Mbps of bandwidth, unlocking the full potential of lossless Dolby Atmos 5.1-channel audio. Compared to standard ARC, eARC delivers richer surround effects and greater detail. CEC integration allows the TV and soundbar to work together with unified control.

The array and processing are intended to make a single cabinet serve different listening situations. Focal lists Dolby Movie, Dolby Music, Sphere Music, and Sphere Movie modes. It also describes ADAPT room tuning through the Focal & Naim app: users enter distances between the system, walls, ceiling, and listening area. That is Focal’s description of the feature, not a guarantee of identical results in every room.

TechRadar’s October 1, 2026 review describes a wide, tall, coherent Atmos presentation, confident movement of effects, and generally natural timbre, while noting some low-end bloom. Those are the reviewer’s listening impressions, not measured results or a claim about how every room will sound. TechRadar’s review

How does Dolby Atmos reach the Hekla?

Atmos support does not mean every input, app, or streaming service sends Atmos to the system. Focal identifies particular multichannel Atmos routes: Amazon Music HD via Chromecast, Apple Music using AirPlay 2, and Tidal Connect or native Tidal. For TV audio, the relevant connection is HDMI eARC; the available format also depends on the content and the device sending it.

For music, Focal also lists stereo playback through AirPlay, Bluetooth, Chromecast, Qobuz, Spotify Connect, Tidal, and UPnP. Treat that as a separate question from Atmos: a service or protocol appearing on the supported list does not by itself establish that a particular track will play in multichannel Atmos.

Will it fit beneath your TV?

Focal gives the Hekla’s dimensions as 100 cm wide, 29.5 cm deep, and 11.8 cm high, and its weight as 15.5 kg. Measure the furniture’s usable surface—not only its width—and allow for cable routing and access to connections. Confirm that the TV stand or shelf can support the weight. The chassis has an anodised aluminum finish described as brushed and sandblasted, with a tactile control dial; a fabric grille and power cables are listed as included accessories. The “highbrow hardback on a coffee table” comparison is a metaphor, not a technical category. The documented design details are the finish and dial; whether they look at home in your room is a matter of taste.

Who should consider it?

  • It may fit if you want one carefully finished system for television, films, games, and music, and you value a single-cabinet setup over separate speakers.
  • Check your setup first if you need rear speakers in the box, want an included subwoofer, require DTS:X, or have limited depth or weight capacity on your TV furniture.
  • Trace your Atmos route before buying if you expect multichannel music from a specific service or plan to rely on a particular TV, streamer, or connection. Compatibility depends on the content and the route, not merely the Atmos label.
  • Consider the price in context if your main goal is an uncomplicated TV upgrade: the reported prices place the Hekla in premium territory, while its broader role includes music playback and an all-in-one design.
