Not yet—but affordable phones in India are under real pressure. HMD India-APAC CEO Ravi Kunwar told Mint that component-cost challenges could last “probably” until the end of 2027. That is an executive forecast, not proof that every phone will become more expensive or that low-cost smartphones are disappearing. Market reporting points to rising memory costs, weaker shipments and price increases that vary sharply by model.
Is the era of affordable smartphones ending?
There is no published evidence establishing that affordable smartphones as a category are ending. What the available reporting does show is pressure on the segment, especially in India’s lower-priced tiers. Prices have risen by different amounts across models, and the market’s shipment decline does not by itself mean that consumers have been priced out or that brands have stopped selling budget phones.
Kunwar told Mint that about 40% of India’s smartphone market is below ₹20,000. Counterpoint Research separately estimated that roughly 60% of the market is below ₹20,000, as reported by TechCrunch. These are distinct estimates with different attributions; they should not be treated as one reconciled figure. Both indicate that price changes in this tier matter to a substantial part of India’s market.
Why are smartphone prices going up?
The reported pressure is tied to rising component costs, particularly memory. Kunwar said costs had increased considerably over the preceding six months and identified demand for memory related to AI as one contributor. He did not identify AI demand as the only cause. In reporting by TechCrunch, IDC analyst Kiranjeet Kaur also pointed to the weaker rupee making imports costlier and adding to manufacturers’ margin pressures, which can be passed on to consumers.

The impact is not uniform. Counterpoint’s Tarun Pathak said smartphone prices in India had risen between 4% and 68%, depending on the model, according to TechCrunch. That range describes model-specific changes, not a single average increase for the whole market.
What does “prices may stay high until 2027” mean?
In an interview published on 6 October 2026, around the HMD Vibe 2 Pro 5G launch, Kunwar told Mint: “The challenge is going to remain till probably the good end of 2027.” He also said consumers would have to get used to higher smartphone prices. The word “probably” matters: this is his outlook, not a confirmed timeline.
In a separate interview reported by HT Tech, Kunwar described pricing in India as likely to remain volatile for the next 12 to 18 months, calling increases “inevitable” while saying HMD was trying to pass on the minimum impact to buyers. The two estimates are compatible as broad warnings, but they were given in different interviews and should not be collapsed into a precise date when prices will settle.

What the market figures say—and do not say
Counterpoint Research figures reported by TechCrunch show Indian smartphone shipments fell 10% year over year in April–June 2026, the steepest June-quarter decline in six years. Shipments in the sub-₹15,000 segment fell 45% year over year. These are shipment changes, not direct measurements of how many buyers were unable to afford a phone or why they did not buy one.
- Counterpoint estimated India’s smartphone shipments fell 10% in the June quarter of 2026, while China’s fell 2% in the same quarter, according to TechCrunch.
- Pathak said buyers may extend replacement cycles to around four years from roughly 3.5 years previously. This is an analyst expectation, not a measured schedule followed by every owner.
- The reported price increases range widely by model, so a buyer should check the specific handset and its current all-in price rather than assume the whole market rose by one amount.
Does HMD’s Vibe 2 Pro 5G show that affordable phones still exist?
It is one launch example in the under-₹20,000 tier, not proof of what every brand offers or of the long-term direction of prices. Mint reported Flipkart promotional prices of ₹14,999 for 6GB RAM and ₹16,999 for 8GB RAM, with sale availability beginning 8 October 2026. India Today Tech reported standard launch prices of ₹15,999 for the 6GB RAM/128GB storage version and ₹17,999 for the 8GB RAM version. These are different launch and promotion contexts, not a single universal or necessarily current price.

India Today Tech lists a 6,000mAh battery, 120Hz Full HD display, 33W charging and MediaTek Dimensity 6300 processor. Kunwar described HMD’s approach as prioritizing practical features and value over headline specifications that a buyer may not use. The launch illustrates one way a manufacturer is positioning a phone; it does not establish that all brands have stopped offering inexpensive models. The cited reports identify a Flipkart promotion and do not establish Amazon availability.

Neither choice is reliably cheaper on the evidence available. Waiting could mean access to a later discount, but future component prices, retail promotions and handset launches are uncertain. Buying now locks in a price and solves an immediate need, but the right decision depends on the specific offer and how long your current phone can still serve you.

- Compare the real price: Check the live retailer price, discounts and any conditions rather than relying on an old launch offer.
- Match the phone to your use: Compare RAM and storage, battery and charging, display, processor and the features you actually need.
- Check software and security support: A low upfront price is less useful if the device will not receive updates for as long as you plan to keep it.
- Factor in replacement urgency: If your current handset remains usable, waiting is an option; if it is failing or no longer meets essential needs, a suitable current deal may matter more than an uncertain future price.
