No—not on the evidence available. DSLR shipments have fallen far behind mirrorless shipments, making this a major camera-market transition. But a shrinking category does not prove that manufacturers made a costly strategic mistake, much less that it was the century’s biggest. That verdict would require financial evidence, a credible alternative to the move toward mirrorless, and a defined comparison with other industries.
Are DSLRs dead?
No. DSLRs are in steep decline, but Canon says it will continue offering DSLR products while customers remain. That is a statement about Canon’s approach, not proof that every manufacturer still develops or sells new DSLR models.
The clearest measure of the category’s direction is shipments. In its report of worldwide 2025 shipments, the Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA) counted 690,911 single-lens-reflex (SLR) cameras and 6,530,814 mirrorless cameras. That works out to roughly 9.4 mirrorless cameras shipped for every SLR. CIPA’s SLR figure covers the SLR category; it should not be treated as a separate count of DSLR models alone. CIPA’s 2025 shipment report also records SLR shipments at 69.3% of the previous year’s level, while mirrorless shipments reached 108.2%.
Those are camera makers’ shipments, not a count of purchases by end users. The figures establish a sharp shift in the supply market; on their own, they do not explain why it happened or show how customers feel about it.

What does the shipment shift tell us?
It shows that mirrorless cameras have become the dominant interchangeable-lens camera type by worldwide shipments, while SLR shipments are contracting. It does not tell us whether the companies’ choices were profitable or whether continuing DSLR development would have produced better results.
| Measure | 2025 worldwide figure | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| SLR units shipped | 690,911 | Shipments in the SLR category, not a separate DSLR-only tally |
| Mirrorless units shipped | 6,530,814 | About 9.4 times the SLR shipment total |
| SLR year-over-year unit index | 69.3% of 2024 | Lower shipments than the previous year |
| Mirrorless year-over-year unit index | 108.2% of 2024 | Higher shipments than the previous year |
All figures in the table are from CIPA’s 2025 annual shipment report. Shipment indices describe changes in units shipped; they are not measures of retail sell-through, profit, or satisfaction.

Was abandoning the DSLR a business mistake?
The available figures cannot answer that. A business verdict would need to compare revenue, margins, lens-system economics, and returns on development investment across DSLR and mirrorless products. It would also need a credible counterfactual: what would the company have earned if it had continued investing in DSLRs, rather than shifting resources to mirrorless or maintaining both lines?

Declining shipments can be consistent with a sensible transition if investment in the shrinking category would have earned less than investment elsewhere. Conversely, a strong shipment trend for mirrorless does not prove every product or investment choice succeeded. The CIPA report measures shipments by camera type; it does not report manufacturers’ financial returns or explain their strategy.

Did Canon misread the market?
Canon’s own claims argue against a simple story of abandoning cameras altogether. The company says its interchangeable-lens digital cameras—combining DSLRs and mirrorless models—held the number-one global share for 23 consecutive years through 2025. That is Canon’s stated position for the combined category, not a claim that it led DSLR sales for that period. In its 2026 announcement, Canon also identified the APS-C mirrorless EOS R50 V, released in May 2025, and the full-frame mirrorless EOS R6 Mark III, released in November 2025, as additions to its EOS R system. Canon’s announcement documents its claim and those product releases, but does not establish the profitability of its strategy.
In a 2026 interview, Canon executive vice president and head of Imaging Group Go Tokura said the company would keep offering DSLRs while customers remained: “So as long as there are still customers for DSLRs, we would like to continue to offer our products.” Tokura also described DSLR shipments as about 700,000 and mirrorless as about 90% of the market. Those are his approximate interview figures, not substitutes for CIPA’s exact 2025 SLR shipment count. Digital Camera World’s interview provides context about Canon’s stated willingness to serve remaining DSLR customers; it does not establish a company-wide financial counterfactual.

What would make “biggest misstep” a fair claim?
The word “biggest” requires more than a dramatic change in one product category. A defensible ranking would need a defined set of market decisions to compare and a common measure—such as lost profit, wasted investment, or lasting harm to customers. No cited evidence here provides that cross-industry ranking or measures the financial consequences of leaving DSLR development behind.
There is also a distinction between a market transition and a misstep. To show that the shift was a mistake, evidence would need to establish that a realistic alternative—continued DSLR investment or parallel DSLR and mirrorless ranges—would have delivered better outcomes. Falling SLR shipments alone cannot establish that.
What should DSLR owners take from the shift?
A declining market does not mean an existing camera has stopped being useful. Whether to keep a DSLR or move to mirrorless depends on the work you do and the gear you already own, not on shipment totals alone.
Quick Recap
- Keep using your DSLR if it meets your needs and your lenses, batteries, handling preferences, and current workflow remain suitable.
- Consider mirrorless if specific needs—such as autofocus behavior, video features, size, or weight—justify changing systems for you. These are decision factors, not guarantees that every mirrorless camera will outperform every DSLR.
- Price the whole change before switching: check compatibility for your exact camera mount and lenses, and account for replacement batteries or other gear you would need.
- Check support for the exact model before buying used or planning long-term service. Canon’s statement about continuing to offer products while customers remain is not a guarantee of future availability or support for every DSLR model.
