CoD3Recomp is an unofficial Windows port of the Xbox 360 version of Call of Duty 3, and it is reasonable to experiment with cautiously—not to treat as audited or guaranteed-safe modding software. Keep it in an isolated folder, use only a legally made Xbox 360 game dump, back up saves and configuration files, and make one change at a time. The project is still in development, so undocumented third-party mods, unsigned binaries, and experimental console commands carry risks that its release notes do not certify.
What the Call of Duty 3 PC port actually is
Call of Duty 3 launched in 2006 as a Treyarch and Activision console first-person shooter. The cited platform coverage identifies no official Windows edition. CoD3Recomp is an unofficial project that statically recompiles the Xbox 360 program for Windows and supplies a native PC renderer. Its v0.4.0 release notes explicitly warn that the software is still in development and that bugs can occur.
That distinction matters when judging mod safety. You are not installing a finished PC release with a documented plug-in system. You are running a community-built compatibility layer and renderer around game code that expects Xbox 360 assets. The project documents configuration controls and a developer console, but it does not document a stable package-based mod loader or certify arbitrary downloadable modifications.
Is CoD3Recomp safe to mod?
The honest answer is conditional. Configuration edits and the documented console commands are reasonable experiments when you can restore the original files. A downloaded DLL, executable replacement, script, or “mod pack” has no safety guarantee in the available project material. There is no cited independent malware scan, code-security audit, or promise that every third-party file is benign.

Use a controlled installation
- Download the archive from the project’s own release page rather than a repack or mirror.
- Place the executable and DLL files in a dedicated game folder. Do not mix them with unrelated games or system directories.
- Keep an untouched copy of the original configuration and save files before changing settings.
- Introduce one modification at a time. If the game starts crashing, flickering, or hanging, remove the last change first.
- Restore the original
.inior.cfgfiles when troubleshooting instead of stacking more experimental edits.
How to interpret security warnings
Unsigned-binary or antivirus warnings are signals to stop and verify the archive, not proof that the port is malicious or safe. The available release information does not establish a security verdict. If a warning remains unexplained, do not bypass it merely to launch the game; keep the download isolated and obtain a clean release archive.
Game ownership, ISO requirements, and installation
CoD3Recomp does not include Call of Duty 3. The v0.4.0 release page states: “You need Xbox360 Call of Duty 3 (USA, Europe).iso file for install!” You must make and use your own legally obtained Xbox 360 game image. The project’s requirement is specifically an Xbox 360 ISO for the USA or Europe release; do not assume that an image from another region will work.
- Download the CoD3Recomp release archive from the project release page.
- Create a separate folder for the port and extract the executable and DLL files there.
- Provide your own Call of Duty 3 Xbox 360 USA or Europe ISO when the release asks for the game data.
- Launch the port once with default settings before changing graphics or console options. This gives you a known-good baseline.
- Back up saves and configuration files, then apply custom settings or commands incrementally.
The port’s distribution model means that an archive claiming to contain the full game is not an official CoD3Recomp package. Treat such repacks as a separate security and copyright risk.
What “modding” currently supports
The documented customization surface is closer to an enhanced configuration layer than to a conventional mod ecosystem. CoD3Recomp v0.2 lists controls for windowed or borderless-fullscreen display, resolution scale, texture filtering, anisotropic filtering, MSAA and FXAA, V-sync, field of view, mouse sensitivity, gamepad and keyboard bindings, an FPS counter, and renderer statistics.

Useful console commands
The same release documents commands that can help with testing, accessibility, and troubleshooting:

These commands demonstrate that the port exposes a console, not that it accepts modern mod packages. They can also alter a session in ways that make a test look broken. Keep a clean save and configuration backup, and use a disposable profile for experiments.
Performance: what the published numbers do and do not prove
The project reports native Direct3D 11 rendering and a 60-fps game cap. Earlier v0.2 notes also describe 1440p output, MSAA up to 8x, anisotropic filtering, and shader caching. Those options indicate a substantially more flexible presentation than the original console target, but they are not a published minimum or recommended PC specification.

The 95–108 fps figure is a project test result, not a universal benchmark. Because the release notes do not publish a reproducible minimum or recommended specification, nobody can responsibly promise 60 fps for every Windows PC. A system that reaches the cap in one map may dip elsewhere, especially with higher anti-aliasing, unusual drivers, or a different renderer path.

Known compatibility and stability problems
Level-loading waits
Version 0.2 documents a rare wait during level loading in the game’s graphics driver. The listed response is to restart the game. If a loading screen appears frozen and disk or CPU activity does not recover, a forced restart is more appropriate than repeatedly changing settings.
Leaks and texture flicker fixed in v0.2.1
Version 0.2.1 records fixes for a physical-memory leak and texture-update flicker. This is evidence that older forum reports may describe bugs already corrected—or that a new build may introduce different behavior. Check the release notes for the version you are actually running before applying an old workaround.
Starting a second level from inside a level
Version 0.4.0 still reports that starting a second level from inside an active level can hang about half the time. Start the mission from the front end instead. If the front end is unavailable, restart the game before selecting the next mission.

Controller, mission, and renderer coverage
No cited project statement guarantees that every mission, controller, renderer option, or Windows configuration works identically. If a controller fails, test the documented bindings with a clean configuration before assuming that a third-party input mod is required. If a renderer option causes a crash, return to the previous setting and remove the related configuration edit.

Native port versus PCSX2
PCSX2 is the practical fallback when you prefer an emulator route or cannot get the native port working. It requires the normal PS2 game image and BIOS used by the emulator; the available material does not establish a region-specific setup for this title.

PCSX2’s Call of Duty 3 entry recommends using a current nightly build because of the title’s CPU demands. PCSX2’s FAQ also warns that save states are not guaranteed to remain compatible across different emulator versions. That makes ordinary in-game saves the safer long-term choice when you expect to update PCSX2.

Choose CoD3Recomp when
- You own the required Xbox 360 copy and can create the specified ISO.
- You want native Windows rendering, modern display options, FOV control, and console experimentation.
- You are comfortable with an unfinished project and reversible troubleshooting.
Choose PCSX2 when
- You have the PS2 version and the emulator’s normal BIOS and image requirements.
- You value established emulator controls over an in-development native port.
- You can provide a CPU with enough headroom for a title documented as very CPU intensive.
Do not choose either as a guaranteed mod platform
Neither route establishes that arbitrary downloaded mods are safe. CoD3Recomp documents settings and commands; PCSX2 documents emulator controls and game fixes. That is useful customization, but it is not evidence of a vetted community mod marketplace or universal plug-in compatibility.

Does CoD3Recomp include the game files?
