The Brooks Anthem 8 is a firm, stable road shoe best suited to easy running, walking, and gym sessions if you prefer a secure, traditional feel. It is less convincing for runners seeking soft cushioning, lively rebound, or protection for long runs. That distinction matters: Brooks describes the shoe as balanced and cushioned, while RTINGS’ independent test found its ride firm, with limited rebound and modest cushioning.

What is the Brooks Anthem 8 like to run in?

RTINGS tested a men’s US size 9 pair and found a stable platform with strong road feedback. Its firm feel can suit runners who want a predictable, grounded ride rather than a soft or springy one. The trade-off is that the midsole offered weak rebound and cushioning in the reviewer’s assessment, particularly for longer efforts; RTINGS described the ride as flat or harsh beside more cushioned options.

Brooks’ product page says its DNA LOFT v2 foam “delivers soft, smooth cushioning and stability to help you feel secure and balanced with each step.” That is the manufacturer’s description; it differs from RTINGS’ test impression of the foam’s cushioning and rebound. Neither description guarantees how the shoe will feel to every runner.

Who is the Anthem 8 best suited to?

Brooks lists road running, introductory running, daily runs, everyday wear, and all-day wear among the shoe’s intended uses. Based on its tested pair, RTINGS considers it a better match for easy runs, walking, and gym work when stability matters more than a lively ride. These are reviewer judgments, not medical or biomechanical advice.

#1 Best Overall
Brooks Men’s Anthem 8 Neutral Running Shoe - White/Black/Tan - 11 Medium
  • THIS MEN’S SHOE IS FOR: Budget-conscious runners and walk-to-run beginners seeking a smooth, stylish, and comfortable introduction to performance running. Ideal for everyday miles or casual fitness routines, thanks to its soft ride and breathable fit. Predecessor: Anthem 7.
  • SOFT CUSHIONING COMFORT: Upgraded with 2mm more DNA LOFT v2 midsole foam for a softer, more balanced experience underfoot—designed to guide your stride while reducing impact across daily walks, jogs, or short runs.
  • SMOOTH HEEL-TO-TOE TRANSITIONS: Engineered midsole geometry cradles your foot on landing, promoting easy and natural transitions from heel to toe for a ride that feels fluid and effortless mile after mile.
  • BREATHABLE, SECURE FIT: Lightweight performance mesh upper offers improved airflow and conforms to your foot shape, keeping feet cool and supported even during warm-weather training sessions.
  • DURABLE OUTSOLE GRIP: RoadTack rubber outsole delivers traction you can trust on city streets and suburban sidewalks, boosting durability while keeping the Anthem 8 light and versatile.
  • Consider it if: you prefer a firm, stable platform for relaxed training, walking, or gym sessions.
  • Look elsewhere if: you want a soft ride, pronounced energy return, substantial long-run cushioning, or a shoe aimed at fast workouts or racing. RTINGS rated it poorly for half- and full-marathon racing.

How does it fit?

RTINGS found the tested men’s US size 9 pair mostly true to size in length, with good forefoot width but a very narrow arch and low height over the forefoot and toes. Runners with a wider midfoot or taller toes may find the wide option more comfortable. The reviewer’s fit observations come from one men’s size; RTINGS expects performance to be similar across sizes and genders, but did not separately verify every variant.

Brooks lists medium and wide widths on its US men’s product page. Because fit depends on foot shape, try the shoe on if possible, paying particular attention to pressure at the arch and clearance above the toes.

How does it compare with the Ghost 17 and Revel 8?

RTINGS’ comparisons point to different trade-offs rather than a universal winner:

Comparison RTINGS’ assessment What that may mean for you
Anthem 8 vs. Ghost 17 The Ghost 17 offers more cushioning and a better arch fit; the Anthem 8 is cheaper, lighter, and more stable. Favor the Ghost if cushioning and arch fit matter most; consider the Anthem if you want the firmer, more stable option.
Anthem 8 vs. Revel 8 The Anthem 8 is heavier but more stable; the Revel 8 is more nimble. Choose based on whether you prioritize stability or a more agile feel.

These are RTINGS’ comparisons, and fit or ride preference may change how the differences matter to an individual runner.

Verdict

The Anthem 8 makes the most sense for runners who actively want a firm, stable shoe for easy miles, walking, or gym use. Its limited rebound and modest cushioning make it a less suitable pick if your priority is a soft, energetic ride or greater comfort over long distances. Fit is another deciding factor: the narrow arch and low toe height may be uncomfortable for some feet, despite the roomy forefoot width.
