No—the current U.S.-market Audi S3 is all-wheel drive (AWD), not front-wheel drive (FWD). Audi lists quattro AWD as standard on the 2026 and 2027 S3. Its multi-plate-clutch system can vary torque between the front and rear wheels, and the 2026 model’s standard torque splitter can send available power individually to the rear wheels when needed.
What drivetrain does the current Audi S3 have?
Audi USA identifies quattro all-wheel drive as standard equipment on the 2026 S3 and 2027 S3. So, for those U.S. model years, the direct answer is AWD—not FWD-only.
Audi’s multi-plate-clutch quattro overview specifically lists the S3 among the models using that system type. Audi says this type can vary torque between the front and rear wheels. Calling it “front-drive-based AWD” can describe its architecture, but that is an interpretation of the system category—not Audi’s official drivetrain label for the S3.

The 2026 S3 adds a rear torque splitter
Audi USA says of the 2026 S3: “The standard torque splitter can divert available power individually to the rear wheels when needed.” That describes the S3’s ability to distribute available power at the rear; it should not be confused with separate rear torque-splitter wording Audi uses for the RS 3.
What Audi’s technical data says
Audi MediaCenter technical-data documents for specified S3 Sedan and S3 Sportback versions describe an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch and on-demand quattro permanent all-wheel drive. Those documents are version-specific; they do not establish that every S3 in every market or year has identical hardware or terminology.

Does every Audi S3 have the same drivetrain?
Do not generalize the current U.S. specification to all S3s. Audi’s pages establish standard quattro AWD for the U.S. 2026 and 2027 models. Audi also announced standard permanent quattro AWD for the new S3 Sportback and Sedan in 2020 in a German-market context. The available references do not provide a complete year-by-year history or prove identical specifications worldwide.
For a particular used S3, check the exact model year, body style, and market-specific documentation. Audi’s general quattro pages cover several system types; details for a different Audi model—such as a center differential, sport differential, or quattro ultra system—should not be attributed to the S3 unless that specific version’s documentation confirms them.

Does AWD mean the S3 is safe in snow?
AWD can distribute torque to the wheels, but it does not remove the need to adapt to road conditions. Audi advises using appropriate all-season or winter tires in cold, rainy, snowy, or icy conditions and adjusting driving to visibility and road conditions. The drivetrain label alone is not a guarantee of traction or stopping performance.
