The ADATA URBAN TAPSAFE is an external SSD built around a convenient phone-based NFC unlock and a clip-style design, but its headline speed is not a reliable guide to long transfers. Short benchmark runs can approach ADATA’s advertised 1,900 MB/s, while independent tests found major slowdowns during large writes. It is best viewed as a portable drive for people who value quick access control and mounting convenience—not as a consistently fast 20Gbps work drive or a substitute for high-assurance hardware encryption.
What the ADATA URBAN TAPSAFE offers
The URBAN TAPSAFE is a compact USB-C external SSD with an integrated clip-style mounting design and app-mediated NFC access control. ADATA specifies USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 (20Gbps), capacities of 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB, and sequential read and write speeds of up to 1,900 MB/s. Those are manufacturer maximums, not guaranteed sustained transfer rates; ADATA says actual results vary with hardware and software. ADATA product specifications
The drive measures 68.68 × 36.18 × 19.18 mm and weighs 72.61 g. ADATA lists an included USB-C cable, spare decorative panel, drive key sticker, security notice, and quick-start guide. Its listed operating temperature is 5°C to 50°C, and the product carries a five-year limited warranty. ADATA product specifications

How does URBAN TAPSAFE NFC security work?
To access the drive, use the URBAN TAPSAFE app and a phone’s NFC function to unlock it. ADATA says the drive locks again when disconnected. The system supports up to nine authorized members, with writable or read-only permissions. ADATA product specifications

This describes an access-control workflow; it does not establish that the drive meets a particular encryption standard. Tom’s Hardware cautions that the product is not a good fit for users who require hardware encryption or high-level data security. Tom’s Hardware review
Do not lose the password
ADATA’s app guide says the user-set password is the only password that can unlock the device. It is also required when adding the drive to a new phone. If you forget it, ADATA warns that the data cannot be recovered. ADATA product specifications and app guide
Is the ADATA URBAN TAPSAFE fast?
It can be fast on short transfers, but independent testing shows that performance depends heavily on workload size and duration. The benchmark results below are specific to the reviewers’ samples and tests; they should not be treated as universal speeds.
| Reviewer and sample | Test | Reported result |
|---|---|---|
| PCWorld, 1TB sample | CrystalDiskMark, 4GiB and 8GiB data sets | Reached the advertised 1.9GB/s range. |
| PCWorld, 1TB sample | CrystalDiskMark with larger data sets | Read speeds varied as data-set size increased. |
| PCWorld, 1TB sample | 450GB write | Speed dropped to approximately 150–200MB/s after about 260GB. |
| Tom’s Hardware, 2TB sample | 15-minute sustained-write test | About 1,800–1,900 MB/s for five minutes, then roughly 250 MB/s, falling below 70 MB/s near the end. |
The two long-write results come from different capacities and different reviews, so they are useful evidence of workload-sensitive behavior, not a direct capacity comparison. Taken together, they show why a brief benchmark or small file copy can make the drive look much faster than a prolonged write.

PCWorld contributor Jon L. Jacobi summarized the limitation this way: “The downside is that it’s not a very good performer for 20Gbps with anything but small data sets.” PCWorld review
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What affects real-world speed?
- Transfer size and duration: Small transfers may benefit from the high short-run results; large, sustained writes are where both reviews found substantial slowdowns.
- Host port and cable: The SSD uses a USB 20Gbps interface. A host connection with less bandwidth can limit throughput, and ADATA notes that hardware and software affect results.
- Workload: A benchmark’s data-set size and duration matter. A peak result should not be read as a promise that a long backup or project transfer will continue at that rate.
Compatibility and mobile use
ADATA lists Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS support. Its guidance notes that macOS users may need to reformat the drive, and that compatibility and sufficient power matter when connecting to mobile devices. ADATA’s FAQ also explains that a locked URBAN TAPSAFE will not be recognized by a computer or phone: unlock it with the app before troubleshooting the host device. ADATA product information and FAQ
Who should buy the URBAN TAPSAFE?
A reasonable fit
- You want an external SSD with an integrated clip-style mounting design.
- You value app-mediated NFC unlocking and the ability to assign writable or read-only access to authorized members.
- Your usual transfers are relatively short, and you understand that long writes can slow considerably.
Look elsewhere if
- You need consistently high speeds for long, large writes.
- Your security requirements specifically call for hardware encryption or a documented high-assurance security standard.
- You cannot safely manage the user-set password, since ADATA says forgotten credentials make the data unrecoverable.
Verdict
The URBAN TAPSAFE’s strongest case is its combination of a clip-style physical design and simple NFC-based access control. Its short-run speed can be impressive, but independent 1TB and 2TB tests both found serious slowdowns under sustained-write workloads. Buy it for the access workflow and portability if those matter more than consistent long-transfer performance; do not choose it on the 1,900 MB/s headline alone.
