Yes, if you want a Star Wars crime adventure built around exploration, syndicate jobs, stealth, speeder travel, and space combat. Star Wars Outlaws has a memorable underworld setting and a varied scoundrel activity loop, but it follows a familiar open-world structure rather than reinventing it. Ubisoft advertises a free demo of up to three hours, so trying it first is a sensible way to judge whether its world and activities suit you.

What is Star Wars Outlaws about?

Developed by Massive Entertainment and published by Ubisoft, Star Wars Outlaws released on August 30, 2024. It is an action-adventure game with open-world and shooter elements, set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. You play as Kay Vess, an emerging scoundrel trying to secure her freedom and a new life, alongside her companion Nix. Ubisoft’s game page presents it as a story about navigating the galaxy’s criminal underworld—not a Jedi power fantasy.

The setup begins with a heist gone wrong. Kay’s survival depends on taking risks, stealing, infiltrating, fighting, and managing relationships with criminal syndicates. The premise is grounded in the Star Wars underworld, with the story focused on Kay and Nix rather than on playing as a familiar movie hero.

What do you do in Star Wars Outlaws?

The game combines several activities into a scoundrel-focused loop. Ubisoft describes distinct locations rather than one continuous map of the entire galaxy: you explore cities, cantinas, and outdoor areas, then travel between locations and take on jobs.

  • Take syndicate jobs: Accept high-risk, high-reward work such as stealing goods or infiltrating locations.
  • Manage reputation: Choices can affect Kay’s standing with different syndicates, changing the relationships she must navigate.
  • Travel by speeder: Ride across landscapes between activities.
  • Fight on foot and in space: Use third-person action and stealth, then pilot the Trailblazer in dogfights against the Empire and other opponents.

These elements make the game more than a sequence of conventional shootouts: missions and syndicate relationships give Kay’s criminal work a through-line. Still, the basic pattern—explore, take jobs, travel, and fight—will feel familiar to players who have spent time in open-world action games.

Is Star Wars Outlaws open world?

Yes. Ubisoft markets Outlaws as an open-world game, with explorable locations, outdoor traversal, and activities such as syndicate jobs. That does not mean the whole Star Wars galaxy is presented as one uninterrupted map. The experience moves among distinct locations, with speeder travel on the ground and the Trailblazer used for space travel and combat.

Is Star Wars Outlaws worth playing in 2026?

It is a good fit if the appeal of being a Star Wars scoundrel matters more to you than getting a radically new open-world design. TechRadar’s review of the Nintendo Switch 2 Gold Edition, first published in January 2026, calls the adaptation faithful and recommends it to fans of the universe, while cautioning that it does not reinvent Ubisoft’s open-world formula. That makes the answer preference-dependent: the setting and activities are the draw; a fresh take on the genre is not the promise.

What the Switch 2 review says about performance

TechRadar’s findings apply to the Nintendo Switch 2 version, not automatically to PC, PS5, or Xbox. The reviewer reports a 30 fps target that is generally maintained, rare stutters during intense action, and unexpected crashes in early long sessions that appeared to be remedied by patches. The review also praises handheld play, noting that the smaller screen helps soften visual compromises. These are reviewer observations about one platform and edition, not guarantees for every player or evidence about performance elsewhere.

What story content is included?

Ubisoft identifies two story packs, Wild Card and A Pirate’s Fortune, as season-pass content. A Pirate’s Fortune pairs Kay and Nix with Hondo Ohnaka in an adventure involving pirate treasure and the Khepi system. Ubisoft says you must complete the base game’s main storyline before starting it. The pack is included with the season pass or can be purchased separately.

Which platform or edition should you choose?

Ubisoft Store lists PC, PS5, Xbox, and Switch 2 digital availability. The right choice depends on where you want to play and what content you want included. The available platform evidence is uneven: Ubisoft publishes PC specifications, while the cited performance review covers Switch 2. It does not establish a comparable performance result across every platform.

PC: check the official hardware targets

Ubisoft’s PC specifications announcement lists these example targets. They are vendor-published requirements, not independently tested performance guarantees.

Target Resolution and frame rate Graphics preset and upscaling Example GPU Memory and storage
Minimum 1080p at 30 fps Low preset with quality upscaling GTX 1660 6 GB, RX 5600 XT 6 GB, or Intel Arc A750 8 GB with ReBAR 16 GB RAM; 65 GB SSD
Recommended 1080p at 60 fps High preset with quality upscaling RTX 3060 Ti 8 GB or RX 6700 XT 12 GB 16 GB RAM; 65 GB SSD
Higher targets 1440p at 60 fps on High; 4K at 60 fps on Ultra As specified by Ubisoft for each target Stronger GPUs than the minimum and recommended examples; specific models are not stated here Not stated for these targets

The same announcement lists ray-traced global illumination, reflections and shadows, NVIDIA DLSS 3.5, Intel XeSS 1.3, AMD FSR 3.0, uncapped frame rates, ultrawide and multimonitor support, and customization options. Those are announced PC features; actual performance depends on the hardware and configuration.

Switch 2: consider portability and the reviewed edition

TechRadar reviewed the Switch 2 Gold Edition, which it reports includes the season pass, two story chapters, cosmetics, and the Jabba’s Gambit mission. Its review favors the package and portability, but its cited pricing was current at publication and should not be treated as a present-day offer. Check the current platform-store listing for price and included content before choosing an edition.

Who is most likely to enjoy it?

  • Likely a good match: Star Wars fans who want to explore a criminal-underworld story, take syndicate jobs, and switch between ground traversal and space combat.
  • Worth sampling first: Players curious about the setting but unsure whether the familiar open-world activity loop will hold their interest. The advertised demo offers a way to judge that directly where it is available.
  • Less compelling: Players tired of open-world games or looking primarily for a novel structure. The cited Switch 2 review specifically warns that Outlaws does not reinvent the formula.
