Solar can reduce how much electricity your household buys from the utility, but it will not automatically eliminate your bill. Whether it saves you money depends on three things: how much your property can produce, how well that production matches your usage and utility’s billing rules, and whether the full system cost and contract make sense for your time horizon. For a 2026 purchase in the United States, do not count on the federal residential clean energy credit: the IRS says it is unavailable for expenditures made after December 31, 2025.
1. Can your property produce enough solar electricity?
A solar estimate starts with your roof and location, not a national average. Roof condition and remaining life, orientation, slope, shade, local sunlight, and system design all affect production. A roof that faces away from the ideal direction may still work; direction alone does not determine suitability.
The U.S. Department of Energy says panels typically perform best on south-facing roofs, including southeast through southwest orientations, with slopes of 15 to 40 degrees. Treat that as general guidance, not a pass-or-fail rule for an individual home. Ask an installer to provide a site-specific production estimate and explain its assumptions about shade, roof layout, and system size. DOE’s homeowner guide covers the factors that shape a home system’s output.

Check the roof before comparing savings
- Confirm the roof is in sound condition and consider whether it may need replacement during the system’s expected service life.
- Ask how shade and roof obstructions affect the estimate throughout the day and year.
- Request estimated annual production in kilowatt-hours (kWh), along with the system size and the assumptions behind the forecast.
2. Will the solar production offset the parts of your bill that matter?
Use your last 12 months of utility bills to establish how much electricity the household actually uses. Add the metered kWh, then separate charges that vary with electricity use from fixed delivery, administrative, or other charges. Solar may reduce purchases of utility electricity, but fixed charges can remain even when the system supplies some of the home’s power.

Production and consumption do not always happen at the same time. Electricity generated when the home is using little power may be exported to the grid; electricity drawn from the grid at another time is billed under the utility’s rules. The value of exported power, eligibility for bill credits, and limits on system size depend on the local utility and customer type. Ask the utility directly how it credits exported electricity and whether any size or enrollment limits apply.
The Federal Trade Commission advises that households will probably still buy some power from the local utility, depending on how much the system produces and how much power the household uses. Its consumer guide to solar power recommends starting with the kWh shown on a year of utility bills and accounting separately for fixed charges.

Match the estimate to your household and tariff
- Compare estimated annual solar production with your actual annual kWh use, but do not assume that every generated kWh offsets a utility kWh at the same value.
- Ask the utility about export-credit rates, billing design, eligibility, and system-size rules before treating exported power as savings.
- Consider when your household uses electricity and whether the utility uses time-of-use rates, which can change the value of using or exporting power at different times.
3. Do the total cost and contract terms justify the expected savings?
Compare the full installed cash price with the total cost of any financed system, lease, or power-purchase agreement (PPA). Look beyond a monthly payment or advertised savings figure. Include fees, financing costs, any escalator in a lease or PPA, maintenance responsibilities, applicable incentives, and what happens if you sell the home. For a lease or PPA, establish who owns the equipment, who handles maintenance, and whether a buyer must assume the contract.
For a basic screening estimate, the DOE’s simple-payback method subtracts upfront incentives from the system cost, estimates annual financial benefits (electricity savings plus annual incentives), and divides net cost by annual benefit. This is not a guarantee or a complete cash-flow analysis. A realistic decision also considers utility fixed charges, financing, maintenance, possible insurance effects, future electricity rates, and uncertain production. DOE’s published investment comparisons use assumptions that include 2.5% annual inflation and no maintenance cost, insurance effect, or resale-value increase; its example households are illustrations, not forecasts for your home. See DOE’s explanation of solar savings and payback for the method and assumptions.

- Max Battery Voltage: 32V
There is no single national savings figure that can answer whether solar will pay off for your household. Your result depends on your roof’s production, your usage, your utility tariff, your quote, and your financing or contract. Get written quotes with comparable system sizes, production estimates, and savings assumptions, then compare them against a year of bills and the period you expect to own the home.
Use the right incentive for the purchase date
The IRS states that the residential clean energy credit will not be allowed for expenditures made after December 31, 2025. The 30% credit described in the 2025 Form 5695 instructions applies to qualified costs within the eligible period; it should not be treated as available for a new 2026 expenditure. If you had eligible 2025 expenses or a carryforward, check the IRS residential clean energy credit guidance and your own tax circumstances.

Check the installer and agreement before signing
- Get the production forecast, system design, total price, and savings assumptions in writing so quotes can be compared on the same basis.
- Check the contractor’s history with state or local consumer protection offices and licensing boards.
- For a lease or PPA, review ownership, escalators, maintenance obligations, sale or transfer provisions, and any buyer-assumption requirement.
- Do not let pressure to sign immediately or to pay cash under pressure substitute for reviewing the quote and contract. The FTC’s solar consumer guidance describes these checks.
Would a battery or community solar change the decision?
Battery storage
A battery can store solar-generated electricity for later use, such as at night, and may provide power during an outage. Backup power and bill savings are different benefits: a battery adds upfront cost, and its financial value depends on local time-of-use prices, export compensation, when your household uses power, and how much you value backup. Do not assume a battery always pays for itself. DOE discusses storage and other home solar considerations in its homeowner guide.
Community solar
If you rent, have a heavily shaded roof, or cannot install a suitable rooftop system, check whether community solar is available locally. In DOE’s description, subscribers receive a utility-bill credit for their share of a project’s generation without owning rooftop equipment or paying the upfront cost of a rooftop system. Availability and terms vary, so verify the provider, subscription agreement, and how credits appear on your bill. See DOE’s community solar overview.

What to gather before deciding
- Collect the last 12 months of utility bills and total the kWh used; note fixed charges separately.
- Ask your utility about export credits, eligibility, billing design, and any system-size limits for your customer type.
- Get site-specific written production estimates and quotes with comparable system sizes and clearly stated assumptions.
- Compare the full cash or contract cost—including fees, financing, escalators, maintenance, and sale-transfer terms—with expected savings over the time you expect to keep the home.
- Apply only incentives that genuinely cover your expenditure date and circumstances; for a new 2026 purchase, do not include the federal residential clean energy credit.
