In one useful sense, yes: Samsung Secure Folder gives supported Galaxy phones and tablets a separately locked space for selected apps and files. You can add a separate copy of an app and sign in to it with another account. But Secure Folder is still part of the same device—not a second phone or a separate operating system.
What makes Secure Folder feel like a second phone?
Samsung describes Secure Folder as a protected area on a Galaxy device, with its own passcode or biometric lock and Knox protection. You choose which apps and files to place inside, keeping them apart from the ordinary profile. Samsung’s Global Newsroom description also says the space is encrypted and can be hidden; those descriptions are not a guarantee against every possible attack.
The separation is practical rather than absolute: Secure Folder runs on your existing phone or tablet and depends on that device’s hardware and software. It does not create another physical device or general-purpose operating system.

Adding an app you already use
Adding an installed app creates a separate copy inside Secure Folder. You can sign in to that copy independently, potentially with a different account from the app outside the folder. Samsung UK explains this behavior in its Secure Folder support guide.

Installing an app only in the folder
You can download an app directly into Secure Folder. If you want it to exist only there, Samsung UK says to uninstall the ordinary copy outside the folder. The folder’s copy and the regular app are separate instances, so check which one you are opening before entering an account or saving data.
Copying or moving files into the folder
Samsung’s instructions distinguish two actions: copy leaves the original where it is and creates another version inside Secure Folder; move transfers the original into the folder. Pick based on whether you need the file to remain accessible in its original location.

Samsung US says files must be in internal storage or on an SD card to be moved into Secure Folder. Files that exist only in a cloud account cannot be moved directly; download them to the device first if you want to place them in the folder. See Samsung US’s setup and file instructions.
Setting it up and planning for a forgotten passcode
- Open your Galaxy device’s Settings and look for Secure Folder, commonly under Security and privacy. Samsung notes that the exact path and labels can differ by software version.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to create the folder and choose its lock, such as a passcode or biometric option available on your device.
- During setup, consider enabling Reset with Samsung account if offered. Samsung US says that if this option is not enabled, the Samsung-account recovery route will not be available if you forget the Secure Folder passcode.
- Add apps or files using the available options in Secure Folder. Review whether you are copying or moving each file before confirming.
Samsung’s US support instructions describe the Samsung-account reset prompt. Menus and recovery choices can vary by software, carrier, and region.

Hiding the folder does not delete it
Samsung says Secure Folder can be hidden from the home or apps screen. Hiding the icon is not the same as removing the folder or its contents. Samsung’s Global Newsroom article says apps inside stop working while Secure Folder is hidden and resume when it is opened again.

Secure Folder is available only on supported Galaxy phones and tablets. If you cannot find it in Settings, your model may not support it; Samsung also cautions that available screens and controls vary by provider and software version. Check the current settings on your model and Samsung’s device support guidance rather than assuming every Galaxy device has the feature.

Do not assume Secure Folder contents will be backed up or transferred in the same way on every device. Samsung Gulf’s support page, updated June 15, 2026, says there is no direct backup functionality and advises moving files out before using another backup service. Other regional or older support material may describe different options, so check the current Secure Folder settings and local Samsung support before relying on a backup or migration method: Samsung Gulf’s Secure Folder guidance.
