Reddit is listed as blocked in mainland China from 2018 onward, according to a maintained reference list accessed on September 28, 2026; that listing is not a live test across Chinese networks. The Wayback Machine story in Russia is historical: reports from June 2015 described a restriction tied to a particular archived page and wider access failures, but the evidence here does not establish a current nationwide block.
What is the status of Reddit in China and the Wayback Machine in Russia?
| Service and country | What the evidence says | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Reddit in mainland China | A maintained list of blocked websites, accessed September 28, 2026, lists Reddit as blocked from 2018 onward. Source: list of websites blocked in mainland China. | It is not a direct, current test of Reddit access across Chinese internet providers. |
| Wayback Machine in Russia | Contemporaneous reports in June 2015 described a restriction involving an archived page and user-reported access failures for the Wayback service and archive.org. RFE/RL’s Krym.Realii; RBC. | Those reports do not show whether the Wayback Machine is blocked nationwide in Russia today. |
These are not equivalent claims. The China listing concerns Reddit as a platform; the Russian reports distinguish an identified archived page from broader access problems reported by users at the time.
Is Reddit blocked in China?
The cited reference list reports Reddit blocked in mainland China from 2018 onward. Because the source is a maintained compilation rather than a live network measurement, access could not be independently verified here for every provider, region, or connection. The best-supported wording is that Reddit is listed as blocked, not that every connection has been tested.

Reddit also describes a separate process for restricting particular content by country. Its help page says that after reviewing a legal report, Reddit may geoblock content in the relevant country if it determines the content appears to violate local law. The company says it considers local and international law, including human-rights standards, and that affected users receive an on-screen explanation and an inbox notification. Reddit: “Why is content being restricted in my country?”

A country-specific restriction on an individual post or other content is not the same as a national block of the Reddit service. The help page explains Reddit’s stated procedure; it does not verify service availability in a particular country.
What happened to the Wayback Machine in Russia in 2015?
The reported trigger was specific archived content
RBC reported that on June 16, 2015, the Russian General Prosecutor’s Office made a decision concerning a page on archive.org under Article 15.3 of the information law. Its earlier October 2014 report described a temporary block of the Internet Archive service after it hosted a video deemed extremist. RBC, June 16, 2015; RBC, October 2014.

Reports also described wider access failures
On June 25, 2015, RFE/RL’s Krym.Realii reported that Roskomnadzor had blocked the Wayback Machine. It said the regulator’s data reportedly identified only a particular page as restricted, while users also reported that the Wayback service and archive.org would not open. That distinction matters: a page-level listing and broader access failures do not by themselves prove that the regulator ordered a permanent platform-wide block.
The same 2015 report described the archive as containing more than 485 billion pages at that time. That is a historical figure from the report, not a current archive count. RFE/RL’s Krym.Realii, June 25, 2015.

Does Reddit’s Russia data show Reddit was blocked there?
No. Reddit’s transparency report for July–December 2022 records 42 unique pieces of content that Roskomnadzor asked it to remove. Reddit says it declined action on 32 because they did not violate its rules and removed 10 under its Content Policy for safety risks. These figures describe content requests and Reddit’s responses, not a block of Reddit’s service across Russia. Reddit’s July–December 2022 transparency report.

On June 25, 2024, Reddit announced an update to its crawler policy and said researchers and the Internet Archive would continue to have non-commercial access. Mark Graham, Director of the Wayback Machine at Internet Archive, said the organizations would continue working together to record and make available archives of Reddit and other URLs. This concerns Reddit’s access policy for crawlers; it is not evidence about Russian censorship or current Wayback availability in Russia. Reddit’s crawler policy update.

What can readers conclude about access now?
- For mainland China, Reddit appears on the cited maintained block list as blocked from 2018 onward, but the listing is not a provider-by-provider live test.
- For Russia, the Wayback Machine restriction and access disruptions are documented in 2015 reporting. The material cited here does not establish whether access is currently blocked nationwide.
- RSF describes mirror sites on major content delivery networks for participating blocked news outlets, reachable in a standard browser without installing a VPN. That is a scoped program for those outlets, not a verified workaround for Reddit or the Wayback Machine. RSF’s mirror-site initiative.
