Probably—if you dislike Western imagery more than you dislike slow, immersive stories about an outlaw family. Red Dead Redemption 2 gives Arthur Morgan a personal conflict beyond shootouts: he must weigh his ideals against loyalty to the gang that raised him. But the game is unmistakably a Western, so its story may not work for you if frontier settings, outlaw plots, or gunplay are the problem. This is a fit judgment based on the game’s official descriptions, not a claim about how every player will respond.
What is the story about?
Set in America in 1899, as the Wild West era is ending, Red Dead Redemption 2 follows Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang after a robbery goes wrong in Blackwater. With lawmen and bounty hunters pursuing them, the group’s internal divisions grow. Arthur must decide how to balance his own ideals with loyalty to the people who raised him. Rockstar’s official description and PlayStation’s game page frame it as a sprawling story set at the dawn of the modern age.

The dramatic hook is the gang’s changing relationships as much as its troubles with the law. Sony’s 2018 preview describes the gang as family-like and discusses shared camp life. Calling that a character drama is an interpretation of the premise, rather than an independent critical verdict.
How much Western is it?
A lot. The setting and story explicitly involve the Wild West, an outlaw gang, lawmen, bounty hunters, and travel across the American heartland. The ESRB rating summary likewise describes an open-world Wild-West environment with missions and gunfights against lawmen and outlaws. Western conventions are not just decoration around a story that could easily take place somewhere else.
#1 Best Overall
- From the creators of Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption
- The deepest and most complex world Rockstar Games has ever created
- Covers a huge range of 19th century American landscapes
- Play as Arthur Morgan, lead enforcer in the notorious Van der Linde gang
- Interact with every character in the world with more than just your gun;Engage in conversation with people you meet. Your actions influence Arthur's honour;Horses are a cowboy's best friend, both transport and personal companion;Bond with your horse as you ride together to unlock new abilities
- If you mainly dislike cowboy imagery but enjoy ensemble stories, moral conflict, and watching a close-knit group come apart, Arthur’s conflict may still interest you.
- If outlaw stories, frontier settings, gunplay, or the genre’s basic world are what you dislike, the narrative is built from the elements you are trying to avoid.
What to consider before playing
It is an open-world action-adventure
The story comes as part of a large open-world action-adventure game, not as a separate, story-only experience. If you want a tightly paced narrative with little gameplay around it, consider whether that format suits you before buying. The official platform and publisher descriptions establish the game’s open-world framing; they do not establish a particular playtime.
The gang’s shared life is part of the appeal
The story’s ensemble dimension includes time with the gang at camp, not only confrontations and major plot turns. Sony’s 2018 preview describes camp activities and conversations, which may appeal if you like character relationships and group dynamics.

- When federal agents threaten his family, former outlaw John Marston is forced to hunt down the gang of criminals he once called friends.
- Experience Marston’s journey across the sprawling expanses of the American West and Mexico as he fights to bury his blood-stained past in the critically acclaimed predecessor to the 2018 blockbuster, Red Dead Redemption 2.
- Also included is Undead Nightmare, the iconic horror story that transforms the world of Red Dead Redemption into an apocalyptic fight for survival against a zombie horde.
Check the mature-content rating
The ESRB rates the game M for Mature 17+ for blood and gore, intense violence, nudity, sexual content, strong language, and drug and alcohol use. Its summary notes graphic combat, violent cutscenes, and brief sexual material. That content is worth checking separately from whether the setting appeals.
Confirm the edition and platform
PlayStation’s US page lists a PS4 Standard Edition that includes Story Mode, and Rockstar’s PC store lists the game with Story Mode. Those pages establish editions for those platforms, not current prices, inventory, or availability in other regions. Check the listing for the platform and format you intend to use before purchasing.

- Experience the eerie monsters and other manifestations of James' consciousness reworked after 20 years
- Made with state-of-the-art technology to play on modern entertainment systems in 4K
Who is most likely to enjoy it for the story?
It is a more promising fit if your reluctance is about the familiar look of Westerns, rather than the themes and events that define one. The central tension—Arthur’s ideals versus his ties to the gang—offers a reason to care beyond the genre trappings. If you want to compare it with another story game, consider four differences: character ensemble versus plot momentum, tolerance for Western conventions, comfort with explicit mature content, and interest in an open-world action-adventure format.
There is no established source-backed consensus about whether people who dislike Westerns generally enjoy this particular story, and the official descriptions cannot prove its writing will work for you. Treat the recommendation as conditional: the gang-family drama may be the draw, but the outlaw-Western world remains part of the experience.
