Yes, Recuva is worth trying for a straightforward deleted-file recovery on supported Windows storage, particularly because it has a free edition. But it is not a guarantee: whether a recovered file is intact depends on the storage, file system, fragmentation, and whether later activity overwrote the data. Stop using the affected drive as much as practical, and restore files to a different drive.
What Recuva is—and what you get for free
Recuva is Windows-focused software for attempting to recover deleted files. CCleaner says it can scan a computer, Recycle Bin, camera card, MP3 player, memory card, external drive, or USB stick, and lists support for NTFS, FAT, and exFAT. It advertises recovery of common file types, including pictures, music, documents, videos, and email files. These are the publisher’s stated capabilities, not independent proof of recovery performance. CCleaner’s Recuva product page
The product page lists a free edition and Recuva Professional. Professional adds virtual hard drive support, automatic updates, and priority support; those features do not guarantee that a deleted file can be recovered. The displayed price can change, so check the product page for current pricing and edition details.
When Recuva is worth trying
- You deleted a file from a supported Windows drive, memory card, external drive, or USB device.
- You can stop using the affected storage and save recovered files to a different drive.
- You want to try a free tool before paying for software, while accepting that recovery may fail or produce an unusable file.
Recuva’s publisher also advertises Deep Scan and recovery attempts for damaged or newly formatted drives. Treat these as capabilities the vendor claims—not as a promise that a particular file, format, or damaged volume will be recoverable. CCleaner Recuva

What determines whether deleted files can be recovered?
Deleting a file does not ensure its data is immediately erased, but continued use of the drive can overwrite the space it occupied. The longer the drive is used after deletion, the more likely overwriting becomes. File-system details and fragmentation also affect the chances; a file that existed only briefly before deletion can be especially difficult to recover. CCleaner says successful recovery cannot be guaranteed. CCleaner’s Recuva FAQ
A scan result is not the same as a usable file. Recuva may find data that is damaged or partly overwritten, and the software cannot make that data whole merely by restoring it. Open recovered files in the applications that normally use them and check that their contents are intact. CCleaner’s recovery guide

How to try Recuva while reducing avoidable risk
- Stop writing to the affected storage. Avoid saving, downloading, or installing files there where practical; new activity may overwrite data you hope to recover.
- Check simpler recovery options first. Look in the Recycle Bin and check the original backup or sync location.
- Scan the relevant storage with Recuva. If a regular scan does not find the file, try Deep Scan, allowing for extra scan time. CCleaner’s product page CCleaner Support on Recuva scans
- Restore results to another drive. CCleaner strongly recommends choosing a different drive to reduce the chance of overwriting data still on the source. CCleaner’s recovery guide
- Check each recovered file. Open it in its usual application and verify the contents rather than assuming a successful restore means the file is intact.
If the device appears to be physically failing or the files are irreplaceable, repeated scans should not be treated as risk-free. The available product guidance does not establish a safe DIY method for those situations or endorse a particular recovery service; consider qualified help based on the device and the importance of the data.
Where Recuva’s documented limits matter
CCleaner’s capability guidance lists NTFS, FAT, and exFAT, and says Recuva cannot recover every file. It excludes iOS devices, generally excludes Android devices connected through MTP, and does not support webmail or network recovery. For a NAS, the publisher says the drive must be connected directly by USB, IDE, or SATA. Check the device’s actual connection and storage format rather than assuming that a device Recuva can scan is necessarily recoverable. CCleaner’s Recuva capability guidance

Compatibility details should also be checked before installation. CCleaner’s product catalog lists Recuva v1.55 for Windows 10, 8.1, 7, Vista, and XP, while its release announcement dates v1.55 to June 22, 2026. Do not assume that newer Windows support claimed for other CCleaner products applies to Recuva; verify the current Recuva download page for the version and operating systems it supports. Should you pay for Recuva Professional?
Professional is most relevant if you need its listed virtual hard drive support, automatic updates, or priority support. The publisher’s feature list does not establish that Professional improves the odds of recovering an ordinary deleted file, and it does not promise successful recovery. If those specific additions do not fit your situation, the free edition is the more sensible first attempt. Verify current pricing and included features on the product page before buying. Verdict: a reasonable first attempt, not a recovery guarantee
Try Recuva when the files were deleted from supported Windows storage, the device is accessible, and you can restore to a separate drive. Its free edition makes that first attempt reasonable. Avoid relying on it for unsupported devices or network-based recovery, and do not treat a listed file as proof that its contents survived. No independent comparative test or representative recovery-success rate is established by the cited sources, so claims that Recuva is the best tool—or that it will recover a specific file—go beyond the available evidence.
