Yes, the regular PlayStation 5 is getting Sony AI upscaling—but not the same PSSR implementation used on PS5 Pro. Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) on October 1, 2026, describing it as a faster performance tier designed for the standard PS5. The first announced games are Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei.
What QSSR means for the regular PS5
Quick Spectral Super Resolution is Sony’s AI-upscaling library for the standard PS5. In an October 1, 2026 announcement, Sony said QSSR is intended to improve image detail and image stability. Those are qualitative claims from Sony; the announcement does not give a resolution target, frame-rate increase, percentage improvement, or independent test results. Sony’s QSSR announcement
The “kind of” distinction matters: QSSR is related to the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) technology on PS5 Pro, but Sony calls QSSR a new performance tier. It does not say that the standard PS5 is receiving the same PSSR implementation or the Pro’s full capabilities.

Why Sony says it developed a separate tier
Sony says the original PSSR’s computational demands prevented it from bringing similar AI-upscaling improvements to standard PS5. Its explanation for QSSR is twofold: a streamlined neural-network architecture and an implementation hand-tuned for PS5. Sony also describes QSSR as born from its AI graphics collaboration with AMD, Project Amethyst. These are Sony’s stated design rationale; the announcement does not provide independent hardware analysis or benchmark data.
That distinction fits the broader platform context without establishing a universal performance result. Ubisoft has described the PS5 Pro advantages over standard PS5 as a faster GPU, new ray-tracing capabilities, and PSSR, and discussed game-specific differences in Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Those examples concern that game and are not a general measure of how every PS5 Pro title compares with its standard-PS5 version. Ubisoft’s PS5 Pro update explanation

Which games use QSSR?
Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games to use QSSR, saying both were being patched on announcement day to add it as an optional graphics setting. That announcement establishes the planned patch timing as of October 1, 2026; it does not establish present availability in every region or the current state of each game’s patch. Check the game’s update notes and graphics settings for the version available to you.
Sony’s announcement does not say QSSR will work in every PS5 game. Its availability depends on title support, so a console update alone should not be taken as a promise of QSSR across the library.

What QSSR does—and what remains unquantified
Upscaling reconstructs an image from a lower-resolution input; AI-based approaches use a neural network as part of that process. Sony’s stated goal for QSSR is to bring AI-guided upscaling to standard PS5 games while staying within that console’s performance constraints. Sony engineer Daniel Craig, Principal Engineer, Graphics R&D at Sony Interactive Entertainment, summarized the distinction this way: “While PSSR remains the gold standard on PS5 Pro, QSSR provides some notable improvements to both image detail and image stability on PS5.”
The announcement does not quantify those improvements. It gives no guaranteed output resolution, frame rate, or image-quality score, and it does not show that QSSR will raise frame rates. Treat the announced benefits as Sony’s description rather than measured results.
