For a player who mainly wants the monthly games, PlayStation Plus Essential is the tier to assess first. It is the least expensive tier and includes monthly games. It is worth paying for if the games you’ll actually play—and any other benefits you use—justify the subscription cost. There is no universal dollar value for a changing lineup.
Is PS Plus worth it if I only play the monthly games?
Start with Essential, then judge it by the games you expect to play rather than by how many Sony offers. A game you would never choose is not useful value just because it is included. Consider how much you expect to play before your next renewal, and whether you would otherwise have bought the games you like.

As a U.S. price snapshot, Sony’s PlayStation Plus page displayed Essential at $10.99 monthly, $27.99 every three months, or $79.99 annually when checked in 2026. These are recurring subscription prices, not guaranteed future prices; offers can vary by account. Check the current price and billing term on Sony’s U.S. PlayStation Plus page before subscribing. Sony says subscriptions renew automatically until canceled.
Estimate your cost per game you actually play
- Choose the billing period you would genuinely use and check its current price.
- Estimate how many monthly games in a typical year you would actually play, not how many are offered.
- For a rough annual comparison, divide the annual Essential price by the number of monthly games you expect to play. Using the $79.99 U.S. annual price displayed in 2026, for example, the calculation is $79.99 divided by your estimate. This is an editorial calculation, not Sony’s valuation of the games.
- Add value for other benefits only if you use them, such as online multiplayer or cloud storage.
Ask yourself: would I have bought or played these games anyway, and how many am I likely to play before renewal? If the lineup rarely interests you or you expect to play few of the games, paying for a longer term may not make sense.

What does Essential include, and when do higher tiers make sense?
Sony lists monthly games in all three tiers. Extra and Premium add benefits; they do not make the monthly games themselves more permanent or inherently more valuable. Compare the extra cost with the specific added features you expect to use.
| Tier | What matters for this decision | U.S. price displayed when checked in 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Essential | Monthly games, online multiplayer, discounts, Share Play, and cloud storage. | $10.99 monthly, $27.99 every three months, or $79.99 annually. |
| Extra | Includes Essential benefits and adds the Game Catalog, which Sony describes as hundreds of titles with new games added regularly. | $16.99 monthly or $134.99 annually. |
| Premium | Adds the Classics Catalog, game trials, and cloud streaming on top of lower-tier benefits. | $19.99 monthly or $159.99 annually. |
These are volatile U.S. storefront prices and may differ by territory, account offer, or date. Sony’s tier descriptions are on its U.S. PlayStation Plus page. If your only goal is monthly games, the added catalog, classics, trials, and streaming are not reasons to pay more unless you expect to use them. Compare tiers by the incremental price and the extra games or features that matter to you.

Do you keep PlayStation Plus monthly games forever?
No. You can add monthly games to your library, but access to play them depends on an active PlayStation Plus membership. Sony’s FAQ says: “You can add the monthly games to your game library to download and play at any time as long as you have an active membership plan.” See Sony’s PlayStation Plus games FAQ.

No. Claiming a monthly game adds it to your library, but it does not turn it into an unrestricted permanent purchase; an active membership is required to play it. If your membership ends, the monthly-game access condition is not met.

How are monthly games different from catalog games?
Monthly games and the Game Catalog are separate benefits. Monthly games are offered each calendar month and can be added to your library while available; playing them requires an active membership. Extra and Premium subscribers also get catalog access, but catalog titles can leave the service. Sony’s tier page describes the catalog, and its games FAQ covers games available through the service. Do not treat a catalog title as a monthly game you have claimed to keep in your library.
Does online multiplayer change the value?
It can, if you play games that require Plus for online multiplayer. Sony says most PS4 and PS5 games require Plus for online multiplayer, though some do not. Check the requirement for each game you play; Sony’s online multiplayer support page explains the service requirement. If you do not use multiplayer or your games do not require Plus, do not count it as a benefit in your calculation.

What should PS4 players consider?
Sony’s current U.S. page says PS4 games will be added to monthly games only intermittently from January 2026. That does not mean PS4 monthly games have stopped entirely, but a PS4-focused player should factor in the less regular additions when estimating how often the lineup will appeal. Check Sony’s U.S. PlayStation Plus page for current information.

When should you cancel or choose a shorter term?
If you are unsure you will use the monthly games consistently, a shorter billing period can limit how long you commit before reassessing. Sony says subscriptions renew automatically until canceled. The official information cited here establishes recurring billing and membership-based access; it does not establish a general refund entitlement, so do not assume cancellation guarantees a refund.
