No confirmed source in the available reporting says Pep Guardiola plans to return as Manchester City manager. City announced that he would step down in summer 2026 and take a Global Ambassador role with City Football Group. Separately, an independent commission found the club had breached Premier League rules; City has appealed, and no sanction had been announced in the official statement consulted.
Is Pep Guardiola returning to Manchester City?
A managerial return has not been confirmed. Manchester City’s May 2026 announcement said Guardiola would leave the manager’s job in summer 2026 after ten years and continue with City Football Group as a Global Ambassador. The club said his group role would include technical advice to its clubs and work on specific projects and collaborations. Manchester City’s announcement quoted Guardiola saying: “Don’t ask me the reasons I’m leaving. There is no reason, but deep inside, I know it’s my time.”
That announcement describes a continuing relationship with the wider City Football Group, not a return to the Manchester City dugout. The sources available do not substantiate a surprise managerial comeback, so the claim should be treated as unverified rather than established news.
What did the Premier League verdict find?
On 29 September 2026, the Premier League said an independent commission found Manchester City guilty of all charges relating to serious breaches of its financial rules over nine seasons, from 2009/10 through 2017/18. The League’s summary refers to alleged sham commercial agreements and misstated accounts, among other findings. These are the commission’s findings as described by the League, not a separate conclusion here. The commission also found City guilty of most alleged charges concerning failures to cooperate with the League’s investigation. The finding against the club should not be read as evidence that Guardiola personally knew about alleged wrongdoing. Before his departure, BBC Sport reported that Guardiola trusted the club had behaved correctly and that there was no suggestion he was aware of the alleged wrongdoing. Has Manchester City appealed?
Yes. Manchester City said it lodged a comprehensive appeal on 1 October 2026. The club disputes the commission’s opinion, stating that it contains “clear material errors, of law, principle and fact and is unsafe.” That is City’s position; it does not replace or reverse the commission’s published findings unless the appeal process changes the outcome. What punishment could Manchester City face?
No sanction was announced in the Premier League’s 29 September statement. The League said sanction would be considered separately at a further commission hearing, and that hearing would remain private and confidential until publication of an outcome was permitted. On 2 October, the Associated Press reported that City had not yet received a punishment. It listed possible outcomes identified by the League as a reprimand, fine, points deduction or expulsion; these are possibilities, not penalties imposed on City.
