Yes—if you enjoy large, demanding logic-puzzle adventures and are comfortable learning rules through experimentation. Order of the Sinking Star combines four puzzle traditions into a nonlinear single-player journey with more than 1,000 handcrafted puzzles. Its scale and freedom are major strengths, but the same design can feel overwhelming or “merciless” if you want gentle hints, constant forward motion, or a short story campaign.
The clearest way to judge it is by fit: this is an exploratory puzzle game first, with story clues and a magical setting supporting the puzzles. It is not an action game, and its advertised hundreds of hours describe an unusually large amount of optional content rather than a required completion time.
What is Order of the Sinking Star?
Order of the Sinking Star is a single-player puzzle adventure directed by Jonathan Blow, creator of Braid and The Witness. It launched on October 8, 2026. The game places you in a magical realm divided into four connected worlds. Each world introduces a distinct hero, movement language, hazards, secrets, and puzzle rules; as the worlds intersect, those rules are combined into more complex situations.

The structure is closer to an interconnected puzzle world than to a linear sequence of isolated riddles. You explore a central hub, choose among branching paths, encounter challenges that may be beyond your current understanding, and return later when another mechanic gives you a new way to think about them. Story clues are distributed through the world rather than delivered as a conventional action-game campaign.

The official description emphasizes more than 1,000 handcrafted puzzles. That figure is a developer and publisher claim, not an independently audited count, but it communicates the intended scale: this is designed as a long-form puzzle environment, not a weekend collection of a few dozen brainteasers.
How the puzzle systems work
The game begins with four foundational puzzle families. Each has a simple central idea, but the challenge comes from discovering the exact rules, then recognizing how those rules behave when systems meet.
| Foundation | Core idea | What changes as the game expands |
|---|---|---|
| Skipping Stones to Lonely Homes | Throw stones to lay stepping paths. | Path placement and movement constraints become part of larger spatial problems. |
| Mirror Isles | Swap places with reflections. | Position, timing, and mirrored space interact with other characters and hazards. |
| Promesst 1–3 | Solve grid layouts built around beams of light. | Beam routing becomes more demanding when combined with movement and world rules. |
| Heroes of Sokoban 1–3 | Use distinct character movement and pushing rules. | Different heroes’ abilities and restrictions create layered pushing puzzles. |
Jonathan Blow said the core idea was to combine these worlds and select mechanics that “dovetail nicely to create new, interesting situations.” That design goal explains why the game can feel harder over time without simply adding larger boards. A familiar rule may behave differently when another character, reflection, beam, or path is introduced.

Expect to spend time forming a mental model of each system. The game rewards asking “What is this rule really allowing?” rather than guessing a single intended move. When you are stuck, the productive step is often to test a rule in a safe area, observe the result, and revise your understanding.

What does a normal play session feel like?
- Explore the hub and available paths. The central area branches toward four regions, and there is no single prescribed route.
- Enter a region and learn its local language. Early puzzles introduce a mechanic through constrained situations rather than a long tutorial.
- Push until a rule stops making sense. You may discover a puzzle that is technically reachable but conceptually premature.
- Leave without losing progress. The game is built for walking away, pursuing another path, and returning with a different perspective.
- Revisit optional challenges. Newly understood interactions can make previously opaque puzzles solvable.
- Follow story clues at your own pace. Narrative discovery supports the exploration but does not replace the puzzle-solving loop.
This rhythm makes curiosity a practical skill. You are not expected to clear every puzzle in the order you find it. The nonlinear design reduces the pressure to brute-force one obstacle, while the large number of challenges gives persistent players somewhere else to apply what they have learned.
How difficult is Order of the Sinking Star?
It is best approached as a demanding, brain-intensive puzzle game. The official description says puzzles build on one another and reward curiosity and persistence. Community tagging on Steam includes “Difficult,” but that is a user label rather than an objective rating or a calibrated difficulty scale.
Launch reactions show the range of experience. Review summaries describe the puzzle design as “impressive, cunning, and devious,” while another calls the mechanics “merciless.” Those are attributed opinions, not measurements, but they accurately signal that the game may require long periods of observation and failed attempts.
Players likely to enjoy the difficulty
- You like inferring rules from examples instead of receiving every instruction explicitly.
- You enjoy returning to a problem after a break and seeing it differently.
- You are comfortable leaving a puzzle unsolved while exploring another branch.
- You prefer systems that combine into unexpected interactions.
Players who may struggle with the difficulty
- You want a gentle, continuously signposted campaign.
- You find experimentation frustrating when the game does not immediately confirm your theory.
- You prefer action, reflex challenges, or a story that advances at a steady pace.
- You need a documented adjustable-difficulty or hint setting. The available descriptions do not establish such options, so do not assume they exist.
A useful mindset is to treat being stuck as part of the intended loop, not as evidence that you missed a hidden button. Write down what each object appears to do, identify which assumptions have not been tested, and look for a puzzle where you can isolate one variable. Because the world is nonlinear, changing location is often a legitimate solving strategy.

How long is the game?
The answer depends heavily on how much of the world you pursue. The developer’s official news describes “hundreds of hours” of unique gameplay. That is promotional wording and should be read as a statement about the game’s total available content, not a guaranteed personal playtime.
Jonathan Blow gave PC Gamer a figure of “around 500 hours” for a typical player completing everything, while explicitly saying it was “not a promise of any kind.” PC Gamer also reported that the game can be completed without exploring every part of the overworld. Therefore, 500 hours is a qualified completionist estimate, not an average campaign length and not a requirement for seeing the ending.
| Goal | What the available information supports |
|---|---|
| Finish the main progression | Possible without exploring every area; no fixed hour count is established. |
| Explore broadly and solve many optional puzzles | Potentially hundreds of hours, according to the official description. |
| Complete everything | Blow estimated around 500 hours, with an explicit qualification that it was not a promise. |
In practical terms, players should not compare this game with a 10- or 20-hour puzzle campaign. You can stop after meaningful progress, return later, and still have a large amount of optional material waiting. Completionists should plan for a long-term project rather than a single continuous playthrough.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Is it replayable?
Yes, in the sense that the game offers multiple routes, optional challenges, and reasons to revisit areas. You can choose different branches from the hub, postpone puzzles, and return when your understanding of a mechanic has changed. That creates replay-like value within one save: the same world can feel different when you approach it with new knowledge.

However, the available information does not establish a New Game Plus mode, randomized puzzles, procedural generation, or substantially different second runs. It would be inaccurate to promise a distinct replay campaign. The strongest evidence for replayability is optionality and scale, not a formal repeat-play mode.
What encourages revisiting?
- Puzzles that are visible before you understand the rule needed to solve them.
- Branching paths that let you defer a difficult region without blocking all progress.
- Interactions between the four foundational systems that become clearer later.
- Secrets and optional challenges beyond the route needed to complete the main progression.
Where can you play it?
Launch support includes PC through Steam, Steam Deck, Nintendo Switch 2, and PlayStation 5. The official Steam information reports Steam Deck verification and ongoing plans for improvements. That does not establish identical performance, loading times, resolution, or patch timing across platforms.
| Platform | Best fit | What is not established |
|---|---|---|
| PC/Steam | Players who want mouse, keyboard, or adjustable display options where supported by their setup. | No universal performance result or fixed hardware recommendation is provided here. |
| Steam Deck | Portable play and the ability to suspend a long puzzle session. | Verification does not guarantee every future patch or setting behaves identically to desktop PC. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Console portability and handheld or docked play. | Platform parity with PC or other consoles is not documented. |
| PlayStation 5 | Players who prefer a current-generation living-room console. | No cited comparison of frame rate, resolution, or feature differences is available. |
Choose based on input preference, portability, and where you are most likely to spend sustained concentration. Puzzle games benefit from a comfortable screen and controls because sessions can involve extended visual inspection rather than quick reactions.
What do critics say?
A launch-period official roundup reproduced short reactions from several outlets. Shacknews called it a “masterpiece” and scored it 10/10; GameSpot described the design as “impressive, cunning, and devious” and scored it 8/10; GamingTrend called the mechanics “Meticulous, mysterious and merciless, masterfully made” and scored it 9/10. These are individual reviewers’ opinions, presented by the publisher, not an objective consensus or substitute for deciding whether the design fits you.

Blow summarized the ambition as bringing the systems together and exploring the “large possibility space” that results. That phrase captures both the attraction and the warning: combinations create depth, but they also increase the number of possibilities you must reason about.
Who should buy or play it?
It is a strong choice if you want
- A single-player adventure centered on logic rather than combat.
- Handcrafted puzzles with rules that evolve and intersect.
- A nonlinear world where exploration order is flexible.
- A very large amount of optional content.
- A game that respects persistence and independent discovery.
Consider waiting or choosing something else if you want
- A short, tightly paced campaign with a known completion time.
- Frequent explicit hints or a documented difficulty selector.
- Action mechanics, character progression, or competitive multiplayer.
- A guaranteed New Game Plus or radically different repeat playthrough.
How to decide before starting
- Check your tolerance for ambiguity. If you enjoy testing theories, the opening systems are likely to appeal to you. If you need every rule stated immediately, the learning curve may feel harsh.
- Set a realistic time expectation. Treat the main route and total completion as different goals. The advertised hundreds of hours concern the full breadth of content.
- Pick the platform that supports long sessions. Portability can help you revisit a puzzle later, while a larger display may make complex layouts easier to inspect.
- Allow yourself to skip. Leaving a puzzle is part of the progression model, not a failure state.
- Use notes. Recording movement, reflection, beam, and pushing rules can reduce repeated experimentation once systems begin to overlap.
Verdict
Order of the Sinking Star is worth playing for puzzle enthusiasts who want an ambitious, interconnected world and are willing to be stuck while they learn. Its four foundational systems, nonlinear structure, and unusually large puzzle count give it more breadth than a typical logic adventure. The trade-off is substantial difficulty and an uncertain time commitment: the complete experience may reach hundreds of hours, while the main progression can be finished without solving everything.
Call it expansive and replayable because of its branching exploration, revisits, and optional challenges. Do not buy it expecting a documented New Game Plus mode, randomized runs, or a short, gently guided campaign. If the prospect of discovering how several puzzle languages combine sounds exciting, the scale is a reason to play; if it sounds exhausting, the same design is a clear warning.
