Order of the Sinking Star is a good fit if you enjoy learning complex puzzle rules, exploring a large world without a fixed route, and returning to difficult problems over a long period. It is a poor fit if you want a short, tightly paced campaign or a dependable average completion time. The full story does not require solving every puzzle, but the story route still includes challenges that a launch reviewer described as headache-inducing. Completionist players should think in terms of hundreds of hours; the director’s estimate of around 500 hours is explicitly an estimate, not a promise or a normal campaign length.
What kind of game is Order of the Sinking Star?
The official Steam listing presents Order of the Sinking Star as a single-player puzzle adventure built around more than 1,000 interconnected, hand-crafted puzzles. The world is divided into four regions, each with its own characters, rules, dangers and secrets. Exploration is open-ended, and mechanics can combine as the worlds and their inhabitants meet.
The cast includes a queen, a thief, a warrior, a wizard and a talking boat. Those characters are not simply story decorations: the game’s design is based on discovering how different abilities and rules interact. Steam describes puzzles that build on earlier ideas, mechanics that evolve, and reasons to return to areas you have already visited. Story information is delivered through play and through notes found during exploration.

Thekla, Inc. is listed as developer, with Arc Games and Gamirror Games as publishers. The publisher describes the project as an expansive narrative puzzle adventure, while Steam advertises “hundreds of hours” of unique gameplay. That phrase communicates the intended scale, not a measured average for ordinary players.

How difficult is it?
The overall difficulty is legitimately high
Steam includes the user-defined “Difficult” tag. In a Nintendo Life review of the European Nintendo Switch 2 version, Ryan Gaur wrote that the game is “not for the weak-willed” and reported that some essential puzzles were headache-inducing. Those comments support calling the game challenging, but they do not justify a numerical difficulty score or the claim that every puzzle is equally hard.
The difficulty comes from having to infer rules, test interactions and remember ideas introduced earlier. Because the game is open-ended, you may reach a puzzle before you have all the context needed to understand it. In that situation, leaving and exploring elsewhere is part of the intended structure rather than a failure state.
You do not need all 1,000-plus puzzles to see the story
The Nintendo Life review notes that completing every puzzle is not required to obtain the full story. This distinction matters: the game has a very large optional layer, but it is not accurate to say that you must clear the entire puzzle catalogue before reaching the narrative conclusion.

That does not make the story path easy. The same review specifically found some puzzles required for progress difficult. Expect a substantial challenge even if your goal is simply to follow the plot. Players who want a low-friction narrative experience should not assume that skipping optional puzzles removes all demanding work.
How long does it take to beat?
There is no dependable average time to credits
The available sources establish the game’s scope, not a reliable typical completion time. Steam and the publisher use “hundreds of hours” to describe the amount of gameplay available. Neither source presents an independently measured average, and the reviewed material does not establish a standard number of hours for reaching the ending.
Your total will depend on how many optional areas you investigate, how quickly you recognize each puzzle’s rules, and whether you leave difficult problems to return later. Two players can follow the same broad story route while spending very different amounts of time on experimentation and backtracking.

What the 500-hour figure actually means
In a December 2025 PC Gamer report, game director Jonathan Blow said: “This is not a promise of any kind, but we estimate that, for a typical player, if they were to be a completionist, it might be around 500 hours of gameplay.” The wording has three important limits:
- It is an estimate attributed to Blow, not measured player data.
- It describes a completionist approach, not the normal time to finish the story.
- Blow explicitly said it is not a promise.
The report also says that players do not have to complete every area before reaching the endgame. Therefore, treat 500 hours as an indication of the possible upper scope for thorough exploration, not as a deadline, guarantee or expected campaign length.
How progression and exploration work
Expect an open-ended route
The game does not present its puzzles as a short sequence of isolated brainteasers. You are expected to explore, notice clues, learn a rule, and apply that rule in a new context. Returning to an earlier world can be productive because later mechanics or character encounters may change how you understand a previous obstacle.

If a puzzle seems opaque, mark it mentally as a problem to revisit rather than assuming you have missed a single required switch. The available descriptions emphasize experimentation and revisiting, not a strictly linear checklist.
Story information is integrated with solving
Steam says that clues to the story appear through gameplay and written notes. That means the narrative is tied to exploration: reading and investigating are part of progress, even when they do not immediately unlock a door. If you prefer story scenes separated from puzzle work, the blended presentation may feel slower than a conventional adventure game.

- You prefer a strictly linear route. The design expects exploration, revisiting and choosing which problems to pursue.
- You need constant narrative momentum. Clues are distributed through puzzle solving, notes and exploration rather than delivered only in scheduled story scenes.
- You are buying solely for a complete-everything objective but have limited time. The completionist estimate around 500 hours makes the scope unusually demanding.
What is included on each platform?
Arc Games announced releases for PC through Steam, Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 5. The cited Nintendo Life review covers the European Nintendo Switch 2 edition, so its comments should not be treated as a universal statement about controls, performance or pricing on every platform. Check the live storefront for your region before buying because availability and price can change.
