Yes—Old School RuneScape (OSRS) is free to start and play. Membership is optional and unlocks a much larger set of areas and activities, including members-only skills, quests, regions, and bosses. If you are new or unsure whether the game is for you, start free; consider subscribing when a specific members-only goal matters to you.
Can you play OSRS without membership?
Yes. Jagex labels the game “PLAY FREE” on its official OSRS page. Free-to-play is an entry point, not access to every part of the game: Jagex describes membership as unlocking the full world and additional content.
What does membership add?
Membership is most relevant if you want access to content that is unavailable to free players. Jagex’s membership page describes the following member benefits. The quantities below are Jagex’s webpage claims, accessed 4 October 2026; they are product descriptions, not independently audited counts, and may change.
| What changes | What Jagex says membership includes |
|---|---|
| Skills | Nine member-only skills — Jagex, 2026 (page accessed 4 October 2026). |
| World and regions | A member world described by Jagex as four times larger, with member-only regions — Jagex, 2026 (page accessed 4 October 2026). |
| Quests | Over 170 quests — Jagex, 2026 (page accessed 4 October 2026). |
| Bosses | Over 65 bosses — Jagex, 2026 (page accessed 4 October 2026). |
| Bank capacity | Capacity rising from 900 slots to a maximum of 1,410 — Jagex, 2026 (page accessed 4 October 2026). |
Jagex Support also describes a subscription as unlocking the full map, exclusive quests and skills, and future content. The official OSRS landing page presents skills, quests, raids, and bosses as parts of the game. Membership therefore broadens what you can pursue; it is not a requirement simply to begin playing.

Free play or membership: which fits you?
| Choose | It may fit if… | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Free play | You are trying OSRS, play occasionally, or are content with the free-to-play activities available to you. | Members-only skills, quests, regions, bosses, and other benefits remain unavailable. |
| Membership | You have a specific members-only goal or expect to make regular use of the expanded content. | It is a recurring paid subscription unless cancelled, and the current price and offer depend on your account, region, platform, and plan. |
There is no established independent study here that can say membership is worthwhile for every player, and “worth it” depends on how much you value and use the added content. A practical approach is to play free while you decide whether OSRS suits you, then compare the current checkout offer with the content you actually want.
How much does OSRS membership cost?
Check the official membership page and checkout for the offer shown to your account. Jagex’s page lists one-month and 12-month billing options, but a reliable numeric price is not established here. Do not assume a price seen elsewhere applies to your region, platform, or account.

Jagex Support says only one-month subscriptions bought through Jagex’s store and maintained since before 27 September 2024 qualify for grandfathered rates; third-party purchases do not. This is an account-specific exception, not a general current rate for new subscribers. See Jagex’s subscription guidance for plan information.

- LEARN WITH EASE: A ten-card tutorial is included, enabling you to quickly grasp the game mechanics without diving into lengthy rulebooks.
A bond avoids paying through the usual subscription checkout, but it is not costless: acquiring or redeeming one uses in-game wealth that could have been spent elsewhere. Treat it as another way to pay, with an in-game opportunity cost.
What to know before subscribing
- Renewal: Jagex’s subscription terms say subscriptions automatically renew unless cancelled before the term ends. A renewal payment may be taken up to 72 hours before expiry.
- Where to manage it: You can review your plan and renewal date in account management. Cancel through Jagex if you subscribed there, or through the third-party store you used, such as Apple, Google, or Steam. Jagex explains the routes in its subscription guidance.
- Which characters benefit: Jagex’s terms say membership purchased for a character works for that character in both RuneScape and Old School RuneScape; it is not a transfer of membership between different characters.
- After expiry: If membership expires without being extended, the account returns to free-to-play and loses subscription benefits.
Is membership worth it?
Membership is easier to recommend when you already know which member-only quests, skills, regions, or bosses you want to access and expect to use them. If you are still deciding whether you enjoy OSRS, free play lets you try the game before taking on a recurring subscription. Check the offer and renewal terms attached to your account before you subscribe.
