OANDA API access is not one single product with one universal price. The v20 REST API connects to an OANDA trading account, and OANDA’s global developer guide does not list a separate subscription fee for it. OANDA Securities Japan explicitly offers its REST API without setup or monthly fees, but only under Japan-specific account and status conditions. For business exchange-rate data, OANDA sells a separate Exchange Rates API with a seven-day trial and paid plans.
So the right answer depends on whether you need to place and manage trades in an OANDA account or retrieve currency rates for a website or business system.
What does “OANDA API” mean?
OANDA offers distinct APIs for different tasks. Its v20 REST API provides programmatic access to OANDA’s trading engine. It supports functions such as retrieving prices and account history and managing orders. The separate Exchange Rates API is designed for exchange-rate data use cases such as websites, ERP systems, or other business applications; it is not simply a paid version of the v20 trading API.

Does the OANDA v20 trading API cost money?
OANDA’s global v20 developer documentation requires a v20 trading account and a personal access token, but the reviewed documentation does not publish a separate subscription price for API access. That does not establish that every OANDA entity, account type, or country has identical eligibility or fees. Check the current terms for the OANDA entity where you would open the account.
OANDA’s official guide describes a “v20 fxTrade” demo or live account as the starting point. The API token is generated through account management after setup. An API token does not bypass brokerage account requirements, and using an API to trade still involves trading risk.
What does OANDA Securities Japan charge?
OANDA Securities Japan says its REST API has no initial setup fee or monthly usage fee. The offer is conditional: the page specifies an account balance of at least ¥250,000, Gold status, and Pro Course. These are conditions for the Japan-specific service, not a statement of global OANDA policy. The Japanese page also warns that its terms may change, so confirm current eligibility directly with the local entity before relying on them.

The Japan API page describes functions including live rates, order placement and closure, and account and position management. It says an integration can run on a PC, server, or cloud; that describes deployment options, not a required hosting purchase.
Is OANDA’s Exchange Rates API free?
OANDA’s Exchange Rates API is a separate service from v20 trading access. Its product page advertises a seven-day free trial, while its plan page lists paid tiers. The trial should not be treated as evidence that ongoing use is free. Review the current plan terms for the data coverage and usage that fit your application.

How to get started with v20 access
- Confirm the local account terms. Check whether the OANDA entity in your country offers v20 access and what account eligibility rules apply.
- Set up a v20 fxTrade account. OANDA’s getting-started guidance allows a demo or live account as the starting point.
- Generate a personal access token in account management. OANDA says the token is account-specific and can grant access to sub-accounts.
- Protect the token. OANDA warns that a personal access token is like a password. Do not expose it in public code, logs, or a client-side application.
What to use instead
If your goal is trading automation on OANDA, v20 is the relevant API; whether it is available on acceptable terms depends on your account and local entity. If your goal is currency conversion or reference rates for a business application, compare OANDA’s Exchange Rates API plans with data services suited to that use rather than treating broker trading access as an exchange-rate subscription.
For a continuously available integration, OANDA’s Japan API documentation identifies a PC, server, or cloud as possible places to run it. Choose hosting only if your uptime and operational needs call for it; the documentation does not make cloud hosting a prerequisite for API access.

OANDA’s global v20 guide establishes account and token prerequisites, while the no-fee and ¥250,000 conditions come from OANDA Securities Japan. Those sources do not establish a complete fee and eligibility schedule for every OANDA country or legal entity. Check the local account terms before budgeting or building around a particular access condition.
