Is Nvidia’s OpenAI deal really in jeopardy? Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang publicly dismissed reports of a rift and said Nvidia would invest in OpenAI. But that reassurance did not preserve the original plan for Nvidia to invest up to $100 billion as OpenAI deployed Nvidia systems. Reuters later reported a finalized $30 billion investment, and an October 2026 report attributed to The Information said Nvidia had paid the remaining $10 billion of that commitment.

What did Jensen Huang say about the OpenAI deal?

On January 31, 2026, Huang told Reuters that Nvidia would make a “huge investment” in OpenAI and said he believed in the company and its work. Asked whether the investment would exceed $100 billion, he answered, “No, no, nothing like that.” Reuters also reported at the time that the original agreement was nonbinding and had not been finalized, citing a Wall Street Journal account based on people familiar with the matter. Reuters via Investing.com, January 31, 2026.

After his February 3 CNBC appearance, Huang pushed back more directly on reports of tension. Network World quoted him saying, “No, there’s no controversy at all. It’s complete nonsense,” and reporting that Nvidia would invest in OpenAI’s next funding round. Reuters separately reported that Huang said Nvidia would consider investing in that round and in OpenAI’s eventual IPO. Network World, February 5, 2026; Reuters via Investing.com, February 3, 2026.

Those comments establish Huang’s public position: he rejected claims of a controversy and said Nvidia remained willing to invest. They do not establish that the initial $100 billion proposal was finalized or that the companies would invest that amount.

What was the original Nvidia–OpenAI plan?

On September 22, 2025, Nvidia announced a letter of intent for a strategic infrastructure partnership under which OpenAI would deploy at least 10 gigawatts of Nvidia systems. Nvidia said it intended to invest up to $100 billion progressively as each gigawatt was deployed. The first gigawatt was targeted for the second half of 2026, using Nvidia’s Vera Rubin platform. The announcement said the companies expected to finalize details in the coming weeks; it described intentions and a target, not a completed investment or confirmed deployment. NVIDIA Newsroom, September 22, 2025.

The proposal combined two related but distinct elements: infrastructure for OpenAI and a staged investment tied to deployment. Its $100 billion figure was an upper limit on Nvidia’s stated investment intention, not a report that Nvidia had transferred that amount.

Did Nvidia actually invest $100 billion in OpenAI?

No. The $100 billion was the maximum Nvidia said it intended to invest under the 2025 infrastructure-linked letter of intent. Reuters reported in March 2026 that Nvidia finalized a $30 billion investment instead, and reported Huang saying that investing $100 billion was probably no longer possible as OpenAI prepared for a public offering. What is known about the 10-gigawatt infrastructure target?

Nvidia’s original announcement set a scale of at least 10 gigawatts of systems and a target to deploy the first gigawatt in the second half of 2026. That date was a forward-looking target in the September 2025 announcement; it is not evidence that deployment occurred. The later $30 billion funding-round investment does not, by itself, confirm delivery of the infrastructure described in the letter of intent. NVIDIA Newsroom, September 22, 2025; Reuters via Investing.com, March 4, 2026.
