Short answer: NVIDIA has reportedly stopped producing the standard, non-Pro SHIELD TV and is concentrating production on the SHIELD TV Pro. It also raised the Pro’s announced U.S. price to $299 on October 2, 2026; NVIDIA’s support FAQ lists it at $299.99 in limited U.S. quantities. NVIDIA did not say the standard model was discontinued because it had “too much memory.” Its stated explanation was substantially higher component costs, including memory, across the industry.

Is NVIDIA discontinuing the SHIELD TV?

NVIDIA has reportedly stopped producing the standard SHIELD TV and is focusing production on the SHIELD TV Pro. That is a production change, not an announcement that the entire SHIELD platform or all support has ended.

NVIDIA’s North America support FAQ still identifies the 2019 SHIELD TV generation and lists the Pro as the model available in limited U.S. quantities at the time of the October 2, 2026 update. The same FAQ says the Pro is sold out in the European Union. Stock and regional availability can change, so a U.S. price or inventory statement should not be applied automatically to other markets.

Why did NVIDIA raise the SHIELD TV Pro price?

In a statement quoted by Ars Technica on October 2, 2026, an NVIDIA spokesperson said: “Starting October 2, SHIELD Pro will be priced at $299. The cost of components, including memory, has increased substantially across the industry.”

  • Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound

That statement describes a cost increase affecting components generally, with memory named as one category. It does not identify a particular memory capacity as a design error, and it does not say NVIDIA ended the standard model because it contained more memory than customers needed.

What happened to the price?

Product or price point What the evidence shows
2019 SHIELD TV generation Launched with prices starting at $149, according to NVIDIA’s 2019 announcement.
SHIELD TV Pro at launch $199 in 2019, with 3 GB of memory and 16 GB of storage.
New announced U.S. Pro price $299 effective October 2, 2026, in NVIDIA’s statement quoted by Ars Technica.
NVIDIA support FAQ listing $299.99 for the Pro in limited U.S. quantities at the time of the October 2, 2026 update.

NVIDIA’s older product landing page still displays $149.99 for SHIELD TV and $199.99 for SHIELD TV Pro. Those figures conflict with the newer FAQ and the same-day price announcement, so they should not be treated as the current Pro price without checking a fresh NVIDIA or retailer listing.

Does the SHIELD TV Pro have “too much memory”?

No. “Too much memory” is a headline framing, not NVIDIA’s stated reason.

The 2019 launch announcement specifies 3 GB of memory and 16 GB of storage for the Pro. That is a product specification from the launch announcement; it is not evidence that the device had excessive memory or that memory capacity caused the standard model’s production stop.

The defensible distinction is:

  • Specification: the 2019 SHIELD TV Pro launched with 3 GB of memory and 16 GB of storage.
  • Production decision: NVIDIA reportedly stopped making the standard model and focused production on the Pro.
  • Price rationale: NVIDIA cited substantially increased component costs across the industry, including memory.

Is the SHIELD TV Pro still available?

At the time of the October 2, 2026 update, NVIDIA’s FAQ listed limited U.S. quantities and said the Pro was sold out in the EU. “Limited quantities” is not a guarantee of continuing stock, and regional availability may differ from the United States. Check the NVIDIA store and authorized retailers immediately before buying.

The Pro is also a seven-year-old hardware generation: it launched in 2019, not as a new 2026 model. Its age matters when weighing a $299 purchase, even though NVIDIA’s product information continues to present features such as 4K HDR, Dolby Vision and Atmos, AI upscaling, GeForce NOW access, and USB expansion.

Should you buy a SHIELD TV Pro for $300?

There is no universal yes or no. The decision depends on whether the Pro’s particular capabilities matter more to you than its age and price.

A Pro purchase makes the most sense when you need

  • Local playback or media-server use that benefits from the SHIELD platform and its USB expansion.
  • Support for the video, audio, and upscaling features NVIDIA lists for the Pro.
  • GeForce NOW or related gaming features on a streaming box.
  • A device with the Pro’s ports and expandable storage rather than a simpler streaming stick.

Pause before buying when

  • You are buying solely for a low-cost streaming device; the reported U.S. price is now $299, with the FAQ listing $299.99.
  • You expect a newly released generation; the Pro remains the 2019 model.
  • You are outside the United States, where availability and pricing can differ and the FAQ reported an EU sellout.
  • You want a firm long-term support or update commitment that is not established by the available announcement.

If you are comparing other streaming players, verify each candidate’s current price and stock, local-playback and media-server support, video and audio formats, gaming features, ports, storage, and update policy. Those details vary by model and region.

How existing owners can expand SHIELD storage

NVIDIA documents USB-drive storage expansion for SHIELD TV. A USB drive configured as internal storage is encrypted to that SHIELD TV, so it cannot be moved back and forth for ordinary use with computers or cameras.

  1. Confirm that the drive is compatible with your SHIELD TV and that you have copied off any files you need.
  2. Connect the drive to the SHIELD TV’s USB port.
  3. When SHIELD offers to format it as internal storage, understand that formatting erases the drive.
  4. Choose the internal-storage option only if you accept that the drive will be encrypted to the SHIELD TV and will not function as an interchangeable computer or camera drive.

Use removable storage instead when you need to move files between devices; internal storage is the option intended to extend the SHIELD’s usable capacity.

What this announcement does—and does not—mean

  • The standard SHIELD TV’s production has reportedly ended.
  • NVIDIA is focusing production on the SHIELD TV Pro.
  • The Pro’s announced U.S. price increased from its 2019 launch price of $199 to $299 effective October 2, 2026; the support FAQ lists $299.99.
  • NVIDIA attributed the increase to higher component costs, including memory, across the industry.
  • No official statement says the standard model was discontinued because it had “too much memory.”
  • The available evidence does not establish that the SHIELD line as a whole or all owner support has ended.
