Not on a proven, apples-to-apples global console-sales comparison. Nintendo reported 23.68 million Switch 2 hardware units sold worldwide cumulatively through June 30, 2026. Sony reported 1.6 million PS5 hardware units on a sell-in basis for the quarter ending that day, while Microsoft reported a 10% year-over-year decline in Xbox content-and-services revenue—not console shipments. Those figures describe different measures and periods, so they do not establish that Nintendo beat either rival in 2026.

What Nintendo’s 2026 figures show

Nintendo’s worldwide consolidated totals for Switch 2 reached 23.68 million hardware units and 58.17 million software units as of June 30, 2026. These are cumulative lifetime figures, not sales made during 2026 alone. Nintendo’s sales data gives the dated totals.

For the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026, Nintendo reported 19.86 million Switch 2 hardware units and 48.71 million software units. Mario Kart World sold 14.70 million units in that fiscal year, including bundle sales. Nintendo said the system launched in June 2025 and described its start as good; neither the lifetime total nor the company’s assessment is a direct ranking against Sony or Microsoft. Nintendo’s FY2026 results provide the fiscal-year context.

Why the Sony and Microsoft figures do not prove a ranking

Company Reported figure What it measures Why it is not a like-for-like comparison
Nintendo 23.68 million Switch 2 hardware units through June 30, 2026 Worldwide consolidated cumulative lifetime unit sales It spans the period since launch rather than a single 2026 quarter.
Sony 1.6 million PS5 hardware units in the quarter ended June 30, 2026 Quarterly sell-in units A one-quarter period figure cannot be ranked directly against Nintendo’s cumulative lifetime total. Sony defines its hardware figures as sell-in. Sony’s FY2026 Q1 supplemental information reports the figure and basis.
Microsoft Xbox content-and-services revenue down 10% year over year in the quarter ended June 30, 2026 Revenue change for content and services Revenue is not console unit sales; the cited release does not provide comparable Xbox console shipments. Microsoft’s FY2026 Q4 earnings release reports the revenue measure.

The measures answer different questions: Nintendo’s cumulative unit count indicates how many Switch 2 systems have been sold worldwide over time; Sony’s quarterly sell-in figure reports hardware units supplied into the channel during a defined quarter; Microsoft’s figure describes a change in revenue from content and services. None supplies a common worldwide 2026 console-unit comparison across all three companies.

What “beating” would need to mean

A defensible winner depends on the metric, geography and period. A console-unit claim needs comparable unit counts for the same dates and market, and it must distinguish lifetime sales from period sales and sell-in from sell-through. A software comparison also needs a shared period and clarity about whether bundle units are included. Revenue or profit can show business performance, but it cannot be substituted for console shipments or unit share.

The reported numbers therefore support a narrower conclusion: Switch 2 has substantial cumulative global sales, while the cited Sony and Microsoft results describe different things. They do not show that Nintendo sold more consoles than PlayStation or Xbox during 2026.

When to look for an updated comparison

Nintendo’s investor-relations calendar scheduled its six-month FY2027 earnings release for November 5, 2026. That date was still ahead as of October 3, 2026, so newer Nintendo interim results were not yet available at that cutoff. Nintendo’s investor-relations calendar lists the scheduled release. Even after new results arrive, a cross-platform winner requires comparable figures from all three companies on the same basis.
