No. Mozilla is not a Chinese company: Mozilla’s official organization listing identifies the Mozilla Foundation as a California nonprofit and Mozilla Corporation as its wholly owned subsidiary. Mozilla Corporation is headquartered in San Francisco, California, according to its audited 2024 financial statements. Mozilla does have a China connection through Mozilla Online, a subsidiary it describes as operating in China.

Who owns Mozilla?

“Mozilla” refers to a collection of organizations and an open-source project, rather than one company with a single legal form. Mozilla’s organizations listing identifies the Mozilla Foundation as a California nonprofit and Mozilla Corporation as a wholly owned subsidiary of the Foundation. The Foundation describes the Corporation as a taxable subsidiary that serves its parent’s public-benefit goals.

In June 2026, Mozilla announced that Mozilla.org had been established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit to steward the long-term success of the Mozilla Project. Mozilla said its organizations remain under the Mozilla Foundation umbrella, with Mozilla.org operating the portfolio on its behalf. Its June 23, 2026 announcement reaffirmed its commitment to nonprofit ownership at the top.

Where is Mozilla Corporation based?

Mozilla Corporation is headquartered in San Francisco, California, according to the Mozilla Foundation’s audited 2024 financial statements. The statements also list Corporation operations in several countries, including China. Doing business in a country does not, by itself, make a company headquartered or owned there.

What is Mozilla Online, and what is its status?

Mozilla’s organizations page describes Mozilla Online as a separate organization that operates in China and is wholly owned by Mozilla Corporation. That is a China-operating subsidiary within the Mozilla corporate family—not evidence that a Chinese entity owns Mozilla Corporation or the Foundation.

The subsidiary’s later status requires a date qualification. Mozilla’s audited statements say that in May 2023 the Corporation filed legal claims against Beijing Mozilla Firefox Information Technology, Ltd. (Mozilla Online), with a long-term intention to wind down its China operations. The Corporation’s contract with Mozilla Online had expired, and the parties had not reached a renewal agreement. The statements report that the litigation remained in process as of December 31, 2024. They do not establish when, or whether, the wind-down was completed after that date.

Is Mozilla’s open-source community the same as its company structure?

No. Mozilla’s governance page describes project authority as primarily distributed among volunteers and employees according to their contributions, regardless of employment affiliation. That explains participation in the open-source project; it does not replace the legal ownership and board structure of Mozilla’s organizations.
