Mira Murati is not OpenAI’s CEO. She held the role on an interim basis from November 17 to November 29, 2023, while the company’s board searched for a permanent successor to Sam Altman. Altman returned as CEO, and Murati went back to her role as chief technology officer. She left OpenAI in September 2024; reporting published June 4, 2026, identifies her as CEO of Thinking Machines Lab.
Why was Mira Murati called OpenAI’s new CEO?
OpenAI’s board appointed Murati interim CEO on November 17, 2023, after removing Sam Altman. The company said it was searching for a permanent successor. Murati had been on OpenAI’s leadership team for five years, leading research, product, and safety functions, according to OpenAI’s announcement.
The appointment was temporary, not a permanent change in leadership. Murati’s time as interim CEO covered the leadership crisis and transition, rather than an ongoing CEO tenure.
What happened when Sam Altman returned?
On November 29, 2023, OpenAI announced that Altman was returning as CEO and Murati was returning to her CTO role. Altman wrote, “I am returning to OpenAI as CEO. Mira will return to her role as CTO.” OpenAI’s announcement makes clear that the two did not hold the CEO role simultaneously.
