Meta has an established data center in Forest City, North Carolina, but the recent project announced for Hickory is a Corning optical-cable manufacturing expansion—not a newly announced Meta data-center campus. Where is Meta’s North Carolina data center?
Meta’s North Carolina data center is in Forest City. The company says it broke ground on the site in November 2010. Its current U.S. location listing reports an investment of more than $750 million and says the completed facility supports more than 275 operational jobs. Construction workers and operational jobs are different measures
Meta also says hundreds of skilled trade workers were on site at peak construction. That describes construction activity, not the permanent workforce. It should not be added to the operational-jobs figure or treated as a current employee count. Meta Data Centers

The Hickory project is a Corning optical-cable manufacturing expansion. Meta reported on April 14, 2026, that construction was underway there as part of its effort to strengthen the domestic supply chain for data-center infrastructure. In January 2026, Meta announced a multiyear agreement with Corning valued at up to $6 billion for fiber-optic cable used in data-center infrastructure. Meta said the agreement supports a projected 15 to 20 percent increase in Corning’s North Carolina employment levels. What does Meta say about Forest City’s local impact?
Meta’s Forest City fact sheet says the company worked with Duke Energy on energy infrastructure and with the Town of Forest City to pay the full cost of water and wastewater service for its data center. Meta also describes water reuse, rainwater capture and infiltration, water-efficient cooling and fixtures, and LEED Gold certification for its operating buildings. The claims should be read specifically: Meta says it paid the full cost of water and wastewater service for its data center, not that it covers every cost across the town’s water and sewer systems. Independent assessment of broader local effects would require records such as utility filings, service agreements, permits, tax documents, and reporting from local authorities.
Is Meta planning another North Carolina data center?
The cited Meta announcements establish Forest City as an existing North Carolina data center and describe a separate Corning manufacturing expansion in Hickory. They do not announce a new Meta data-center campus in the state. The available project-specific investment and job figures are Meta’s own published figures; they do not independently establish the facility’s present workforce or overall local economic and utility effects.
