McDonald’s says AI does not set or change menu prices. Its October 1, 2026 statement describes the pricing portal as a source of restaurant-specific information; franchisees decide what prices to charge and whether to follow its recommendations. Reuters, however, reported that the portal uses transaction and competitor data to generate price recommendations and that some franchisees described pressure to use the tools. That is a dispute about how influential recommendations are—not proof that an algorithm automatically sets what customers pay.
What McDonald’s says its pricing tool does
In its October 1, 2026 corporate statement, McDonald’s says its pricing tool provides information about restaurant-level market conditions, including location and other local factors. It says the system does not set or change menu prices, decide what an individual customer pays, or use an individual customer’s willingness to pay.
The company also says the tool does not change prices in real time or vary them by hour. McDonald’s describes local costs, demand, competition, and economic conditions as factors that have long informed pricing decisions. It says franchisees independently set prices and are not required to accept the portal’s recommendations. These are the company’s descriptions of its system; the cited materials do not independently verify the model’s configuration.

What Reuters reported about the recommendations
Reuters’ September 29, 2026 report describes a pricing engine that uses machine-learning algorithms to analyze data from millions of daily transactions across nearly 14,000 U.S. restaurants and generate what the company calls an “optimal price” for menu items at each location. Reuters said it reviewed screenshots of the pricing interface and interviewed nine people with first-hand knowledge of the company’s strategy. It reported that the system includes competitor price information and restaurant-level indicators labeled “customer willingness to pay.”

That account describes restaurant-level recommendations, while McDonald’s denies using an individual customer’s willingness to pay to set that person’s price. The exact variables, their weighting, and the degree to which recommendations influence final prices are not established in the cited reporting and company statement.
Why nearby McDonald’s prices may differ
Reuters checked the McDonald’s app in September 2026 and found a Big Mac listed for $5.69 at one company-run Fresno restaurant and $6.89 at another about two miles away—a reported difference of 21%. Reuters said it could not determine whether the gap resulted from the tool’s recommendations or other factors. The price comparison shows that nearby locations can have different listed prices; it does not establish why.

McDonald’s says local market conditions can vary between restaurants only a few miles apart. That is the company’s explanation for location-specific pricing, not independent evidence that any particular factor caused the Fresno difference.

Those accounts raise a distinction between formal authority and practical pressure: the company says the portal is not a mandate, while some interviewed franchisees said they felt pushed to use the tools. Former McDonald’s store owner Karen King told Reuters, “You don’t really have much of a choice anymore.” That is her account, and Reuters reported that McDonald’s did not address her specific claim; it is not a finding about every franchisee or proof that AI sets final prices.
Does McDonald’s use dynamic pricing?
McDonald’s says it does not use dynamic pricing. In its statement, the company says the tool does not change prices in real time or at different hours, and does not determine an individual customer’s price. This is the company’s position; the cited materials do not provide an independent technical audit of the model.

The phrase “AI pricing” can mean different things. An algorithm that recommends restaurant-level prices is not the same as a system that automatically changes a final price or personalizes it for each customer. The company denies the latter practices, while Reuters reports that the portal produces recommendations and that some franchisees feel pressure to use them.
Is ArchIQ the same as the pricing tool?
No such connection is identified in the available announcements. McDonald’s’ September 23, 2026 NEXT strategy announcement separately describes ArchIQ as a generative-AI initiative for restaurant efficiency. It does not identify ArchIQ as the pricing recommendation portal.
