Yes. Juice jacking is technically possible: a compromised USB charging port could use the same connection’s data capability to try to access or affect a connected device. That does not mean public charging stations are generally malicious or that successful attacks are common; the sources available do not establish how often they happen. For the simplest precaution, use your own charger and cable with an electrical outlet.
What juice jacking means
USB can carry both electrical power and data. Juice jacking describes the potential misuse of a USB charging connection’s data path—for example, an attacker could try to copy information or transfer malware through a compromised port. The risk is tied to the data connection, not to charging a phone by itself. Ask Leo!’s explanation describes the attack concept; it does not show that an arbitrary public charging station is compromised.
What the FBI warning does—and does not—show
On April 6, 2023, FBI Denver advised people to avoid free charging stations in places such as airports, hotels, and shopping centers, and to bring their own charger and USB cord for use with an electrical outlet. CBS News reported that the public service announcement was not prompted by a specific incident.

The warning shows that the FBI considered the risk worth mentioning; it is not an incident count or evidence of a rising trend. ABC News reported that the FBI did not answer whether malicious activity had increased. The available sources do not establish a reliable rate of successful attacks or show that they are common.

How to reduce the risk when charging
Use your own charger and cable with an outlet
When possible, plug your personal wall charger into an electrical outlet and connect your phone with your own cable. This avoids connecting the phone to an unknown USB data port. FBI Denver’s advice, as reported by CBS News, recommends this approach instead of using free public charging stations.
Use a compatible data blocker if you must use a USB port
A USB data blocker sits between the charging port and your device, allowing power lines to connect while preventing the data lines from making contact. Check that the blocker’s connector matches your phone and cable. It can be useful when an outlet is unavailable, but the sources do not establish any brand or model as superior. Ask Leo! explains how data blockers work.

Do not treat device prompts as a universal guarantee
Ask Leo! says most current mobile devices require a manual step for data transfer. That generalization does not verify the behavior of every phone, operating system, or software version, so do not assume a particular device is protected without checking its manufacturer’s current guidance.
