No—Japan is not currently building a giant solar ring around the Moon. LUNA RING is a proposal from Japanese engineering company Shimizu Corporation: collect sunlight with solar cells arranged around the lunar equator, then beam energy to receiving stations on Earth. The concept has been documented since at least 2010, but the sources available do not establish a funded construction program, mission, schedule or operating system.

What is the LUNA RING?

LUNA RING is Shimizu Corporation’s proposed way to generate solar power on the Moon and transmit it to Earth. Shimizu describes the idea as “Generate power by installing a ring of solar power cells around the equator of moon.” That is a description of a concept, not a report that a ring has been built.

The company’s concept places solar cells in a belt around the lunar equator. Electricity would travel across the Moon’s surface to a transmission site on the side facing Earth. There, equipment would convert the electricity into a microwave or laser beam and send it toward Earth-based receiving facilities. Those facilities would convert the received energy into electricity; Shimizu also mentions hydrogen production as a possible use.

How would the proposed system work?

  1. Collect sunlight: Solar cells in a belt around the Moon’s equator would generate electricity.
  2. Move power to a transmitter: A cable would carry the electricity along the lunar surface to an Earth-facing transmission site.
  3. Beam energy toward Earth: The site would convert the electricity to microwaves or laser light and transmit it toward Earth.
  4. Receive and use the energy: Earth-based facilities would collect the beam and convert it into electricity, with hydrogen production also described as a potential application.

These are the steps in Shimizu’s proposed architecture. The available sources do not report a working demonstration of the complete chain or measured electricity delivered to Earth.

How large is the concept?

Shimizu’s concept page gives the following approximate dimensions. The page does not state a publication year, and these figures describe the proposal—not installed infrastructure or independently validated engineering requirements.

Feature Size stated by Shimizu What the figure describes
Solar-cell belt Approximately 11,000 km long The length of the belt around the lunar equator
Belt width Several kilometers to 400 km The proposed width range of the solar-cell belt
Microwave transmission antenna 20 km in diameter The proposed antenna’s diameter

Why propose solar power on the Moon?

Shimizu presents the Moon as a place where solar generation could avoid terrestrial weather and operate continuously, describing 24-hour generation as an advantage of the concept. Those are intended benefits, not results from a built system. The proposal’s promise of continuous power should not be read as a guarantee that a real installation could deliver uninterrupted electricity to Earth.

For comparison, ordinary ground-based solar panels collect sunlight on Earth and supply electricity through terrestrial power infrastructure. LUNA RING would instead collect sunlight on the Moon, transmit energy over the lunar surface, beam it across space, and require Earth-based receivers to convert it back into electricity. The available sources do not quantify how the systems would compare in cost, output or environmental impact.

Could robots build it?

Shimizu proposes using lunar materials as construction inputs and having robots lead surface construction under remote control from Earth, with some work involving human presence. These are proposed methods, not demonstrated capabilities for building and maintaining an integrated lunar power system. The concept depends on extensive lunar infrastructure, including solar cells, surface power transmission, a large beam transmitter and receiving facilities on Earth.

Is Japan actually building it?

No construction program is established by the sources cited here. Shimizu’s corporate material presents LUNA RING as a proposal, while a Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers conference record dated January 28, 2010 documents the initiative as a technical concept. The idea is therefore not a newly announced Japanese construction project.

The sources do not establish a Japanese government program, funded mission, approved budget, construction schedule or operating system. They also do not provide a reliable cost estimate or a current independent feasibility review. No independently measured generation, reliability or power delivery is reported.

What remains unproven?

The concept describes an ambitious route from lunar sunlight to electricity on Earth, but the cited material does not demonstrate that the complete system is practical. In particular, it does not establish net power delivered, system reliability, cost, environmental effects, or the feasibility of building and maintaining the infrastructure. Shimizu’s stated advantages should be understood as goals of a proposal rather than verified performance.
