Yes—if the refurbished phone is meaningfully cheaper and the seller clearly backs its battery, condition, repairs, returns, warranty, and remaining software support. A new mid-range phone is usually the safer, simpler buy when those details are vague, the saving is small, or the older model is nearing the end of security updates. There is no universal price cut that makes a refurb worthwhile: compare the exact phones, local prices, seller terms, and how long you expect to keep yours.

How to decide whether the refurb is worth it

Compare the refurbished handset with a new mid-range phone you would genuinely consider buying. Match storage and network status where possible, and calculate the full cost rather than comparing headline prices.

What to compare What to establish
Total price Include delivery, fees, financing costs, and any likely battery replacement or necessary accessories.
Battery Find out whether it has a new battery, a stated minimum health level, or only a general functional check. If there is no useful commitment, factor in replacement cost and inconvenience.
Condition and repairs Ask what the seller’s grade means, what tests were performed, whether replacement parts are original, and what cosmetic marks to expect. Grades are not standardized across retailers.
Warranty and returns Check duration, exclusions, who handles claims, and the return window. Read the seller’s terms separately from any marketplace platform protections.
Software support Look up the manufacturer’s current update commitment for the exact model and how much support remains. A bargain may be poor value if security support ends before you expect to replace the phone.
Ownership period If you plan to keep the phone for years, battery life and support runway carry more weight. For a short-term or tightly budgeted purchase, cosmetic wear may be acceptable if the price and protections compensate.

Consumer concerns are not just theoretical: in the GSMA’s 2025 report, surveyed consumers cited early failure (49%), condition worse than expected (46%), cleanliness or hygiene (42%), and a shorter warranty (38%) among their leading concerns about refurbished phones. Nearly half said cost savings were a very important benefit, and 40% said the savings could let them buy a higher-end model than new. These are survey responses, not guarantees about any particular handset. GSMA, Rethinking Mobile Phones (2025).

What “refurbished” can mean in practice

There is no single grade or battery promise that applies across sellers. Look for the actual policy behind the label: inspection and cleaning process, battery standard, parts used, warranty, and return terms. Two examples show how much programs can differ, even when both come from established UK sellers.

Samsung Certified Re-Newed in the UK

Samsung says its Certified Re-Newed Galaxy smartphones are inspected and cleaned by Samsung-approved technicians, use genuine Samsung parts, and include a two-year warranty. Samsung describes the certified battery as a genuine battery inspected against its quality standards and offering performance comparable to a new battery. It also notes that availability varies by country or region and that phones may have minor external blemishes. Samsung UK Certified Re-Newed.

EE refurbished phones in the UK

EE’s policy gives refurbished phones a 24-month warranty and a 14-day return option. EE says batteries are tested to performance standards: some phones have new batteries, while others meet a minimum health threshold. It also says some refurbished phones may contain parts that are not manufacturer-original. Read the terms for the specific phone rather than assuming every unit has the same battery or parts history. Battery grades are not a promise by themselves

Which? tested six second-hand Apple and Samsung phones graded A–C. In that particular lab sample, the Grade A iPhone had 84% battery capacity and the Samsung had 93%. Those measurements apply only to the tested handsets; they do not establish what any other retailer’s Grade A phone will deliver. Which? says Grade B or equivalent can balance price and condition based on its tests and advice, but the seller’s own definition and battery terms still matter. When a new mid-range phone is the better buy

  • The refurb’s total saving is modest once fees, likely repairs, or a battery replacement are included.
  • The seller will not state what its condition grade means or provide a meaningful battery commitment.
  • The refurb is close to losing security updates, while you intend to keep it for several years.
  • You value a fresh battery and predictable condition more than the savings or higher-tier features of an older model.
  • Returns or warranty terms are unclear, difficult to use, or too limited for the risk you are accepting.

Update longevity matters beyond one buyer’s preference: around 90% of surveyed consumers in the GSMA’s 2025 report rated durability, guaranteed software and security updates for at least seven years, and easy, low-cost repair as important factors in their next phone purchase. That is stated importance in a survey, not a universal requirement or a claim that every phone offers seven years of support. GSMA, Rethinking Mobile Phones (2025).

Buying in the UK: protections depend on the seller

UK consumer rights are not the same as the seller’s voluntary warranty, and these protections should not be assumed to apply in other countries. Which? says refurbished or second-hand phones bought from a retailer are generally covered by consumer rights similar to those for new handsets. Its summary of the Consumer Rights Act describes a 30-day right to return a phone that is not as described, fit for purpose, or of satisfactory quality, and a six-month period in which the retailer must prove a fault was not present at sale. Which? distinguishes retailer purchases from marketplace transactions, where the individual seller may be responsible for a warranty, and private sales, which offer less protection. Which? refurbished-phone guidance.

An extended warranty is optional; it is not the price of admission to statutory rights. GOV.UK says statutory rights may provide a remedy such as a refund, repair, or replacement for faults. Before paying for extra cover, compare its total cost with replacement and check whether you already have relevant protection. GOV.UK guidance on extended warranties.

  1. Compare the handset and included accessories with the listing; note any undisclosed damage or missing items.
  2. Test each camera and available camera mode, then check buttons, charging, and any headphone port the model has.
  3. Try fingerprint or face unlock and inspect battery health if the phone exposes that information. Observe whether runtime is consistent with the seller’s stated promise.
  4. If a material problem appears, contact the retailer or seller within the stated return period and keep written records of the issue and response.

Is buying refurbished better for the environment?

A refurbished phone is not automatically a fixed percentage more sustainable. Vodafone UK relays a 2021 life-cycle assessment result in which a refurbished phone used for an average of 1.93 years had a 55% lower contribution to climate change than a new phone used for 2.5 years. The comparison uses different use durations and should not be treated as the reduction for every phone, refurbishment process, or ownership period. Vodafone UK on refurbished phones.
