Yes—if you already own a PS5 and want a dedicated screen for playing compatible PS5 games over Wi-Fi. Otherwise, the Steam Deck is usually the more suitable buy for someone who wants a handheld that runs games from their Steam library. Portal is a PS5 streaming companion, not a standalone console; Steam Deck is a handheld PC. The right choice depends on which game library you want to play and whether your usual gaming locations have dependable internet.

PlayStation describes Portal as giving players access to PS5 games over Wi-Fi without needing to play on a TV. That is the key distinction: it extends a PS5 setup rather than replacing it. Steam Deck is a separate handheld computer, so it is the closer fit if you want to carry a Steam library with you.

Choose Portal if your PS5 is the reason you want a handheld
For Remote Play, Portal connects to a PS5 and streams compatible installed games over Wi-Fi. Sony says you need a PS5 and PlayStation account; the console must be connected to broadband, powered on or in Rest Mode, and paired with Portal. Sony lists 5 Mbps as the minimum connection speed and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. That makes Portal particularly useful when the PS5 remains at home but the television is unavailable or you want to play in another room. It is not a way to take the PS5 library offline: streaming depends on the connection between the handheld, network, and console.

Know the compatibility limits
- Remote Play is for PS5; Portal is not compatible with PS4.
- Not every PS5 game is necessarily compatible with Remote Play.
- PS5 media-tab apps are not supported while using Remote Play, so Portal is not a general-purpose media tablet.
Check Sony’s Portal compatibility guidance for the current details and any accessory-specific questions. Audio support includes wired devices with a 3.5 mm connection and PlayStation Link devices such as PULSE Explore earbuds and PULSE Elite headset; verify a particular model before buying it for Portal.
Cloud streaming adds another route, with conditions
Sony also offers cloud streaming on Portal for eligible games in supported regions. It can work while the PS5 is off or being used with another account, but it requires PlayStation Plus Premium, an eligible account and location, and a game Sony makes available for streaming. Sony lists 5 Mbps upload and download to establish a session, with higher requirements for some resolutions. These are connection requirements, not performance measurements. Catalog availability can change by region and over time, so check Sony’s cloud-streaming page before relying on it.

Choose Steam Deck if you want the handheld to run your games
Steam Deck is a SteamOS handheld PC with local SSD storage and microSD expansion. Valve provides compatibility ratings, which are worth checking for the specific Steam games you plan to play rather than assuming that the whole library works identically. It is not a PS5 accessory, and it does not give you native access to your PS5 library merely because you own a PlayStation.
The practical advantage is that supported installed games can be played locally, so a reliable internet connection is not a universal requirement for play. Downloads, online multiplayer, and individual game features may still require internet. Valve’s hardware overview and technical specifications describe the platform and models.

How the Steam Deck screen and battery figures compare
Valve’s current specifications list different screen and battery figures for the OLED and LCD models. Battery life is a manufacturer estimate and varies with the game and usage; it is not a promise for any particular title. The figures below are Valve’s published specifications accessed October 4, 2026.

These specifications help distinguish the Deck models, but they do not establish a like-for-like advantage over Portal. There is no comparable Portal battery estimate established here, and streaming conditions make a direct runtime claim inappropriate.
Make the choice with your games and connection
- Buy Portal if you own a PS5, want to play compatible games from that console on a dedicated handheld screen, and usually have reliable Wi-Fi. It is the more direct solution for extending a PS5 setup.
- Buy Steam Deck if you want a handheld PC for your Steam library, value local play for supported installed games, and want the flexibility of a SteamOS device rather than a PS5 streaming accessory.
- Pause before choosing if neither game library is a clear priority. Identify the specific games you want to play, verify their Portal or Deck compatibility, and consider whether your usual play locations have dependable internet.
Prices and model availability vary by market and date, so compare current local prices before deciding which is the better value. A lower device price alone does not settle the choice if you would also need a PS5, a Premium subscription for cloud streaming, or a different game library to use it as intended.
