Yes, storing files in a desktop folder is generally safe for convenience, but it is not a secure backup by itself. The folder is on your computer, so its files can be exposed if someone accesses the device or malware reaches it—and can be lost if the computer is stolen, damaged, or stops working. Keep a separate backup, and encrypt sensitive files or the device.
What “desktop storage” protects—and what it doesn’t
A file saved to the desktop is stored locally on the computer, just like a file saved in another folder on its drive. The desktop location can make documents easy to find, but it does not create a separate copy or protect the files from a computer failure, theft, or damage. CISA warns that locally stored data may be exposed to cyber threats or permanently lost if a device is lost, stolen, or stops working (CISA: How to Protect the Data that is Stored on Your Devices).
Think of desktop storage as a convenient working copy. Whether it is appropriate depends on the sensitivity of the files, who can use the computer, and whether you could recover the files if the device became unavailable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMake a separate backup of important files
Keep another copy of files you cannot afford to lose. CISA recommends backing up data to an external drive or a properly vetted cloud service. An external drive gives you a physically separate copy; store it safely and disconnect it when you are not backing up. If it remains connected, ransomware may be able to reach and corrupt or delete the backup, CISA cautions.

A cloud service can keep a copy away from the computer, but check how files are backed up and how you would restore them. Synchronization alone should not be treated as a guaranteed, independent backup: changes or deletions may also be reflected in synced files. Microsoft describes OneDrive ransomware detection and recovery and file versioning as features that may help Windows users recover files, but those features are not a promise of complete protection (Microsoft Support: Protect your PC from ransomware).
Use encryption for sensitive files
Encryption can make stored data harder for someone to read without authorization. Before enabling it, make a backup and securely retain the password and any recovery key. If those credentials are lost, accessing the encrypted files may be difficult or impossible. CISA recommends encryption as part of protecting data (CISA: Safeguarding Your Data).

Windows edition matters for Microsoft’s file-or-folder encryption instructions: the feature described on its support page is not available in Windows Home. This is a limitation of that Windows feature, not a statement about encryption on every operating system. Check the instructions for your operating system and edition before relying on a particular option (Microsoft Support: How To Encrypt a File or Folder).

If other people use the computer
Use separate user accounts so other people do not routinely work in your account or alter your files by accident. Separate accounts reduce casual access, but they are not complete protection against system vulnerabilities or someone with administrative access. For employer or client files, follow your organization’s storage rules rather than copying work data to a personal desktop.

A practical order of operations
- Back up first. Copy important files to a separate external drive or a properly vetted cloud service, and make sure you know how to restore them.
- Choose suitable encryption. Consider whether you need to encrypt individual files, a drive, or the device, based on the sensitivity of the data and the options available on your operating system and edition.
- Secure recovery details. Keep encryption passwords and recovery keys somewhere safe and accessible to you if the computer is lost or replaced.
- Enable encryption. Follow the current instructions for your device and operating system. Keep the system updated and its built-in security protections enabled; Microsoft recommends both for Windows users (Microsoft Support: Protect your PC from ransomware).
- Protect the backup copy. Keep external media in a safe place and disconnect it when it is not actively being used for backups.
