Sharing your phone number online is not automatically unsafe, but avoid posting it publicly and pause before giving it to a person or site whose purpose you cannot verify. A number alone does not hand someone access to your accounts; the greater risk is that it can help a scammer target you or, in a SIM-swap or number-transfer attack, persuade your carrier to route your calls and texts to them.
What to check before sharing your number
Use these checks to decide whether a particular disclosure is reasonable. They are practical safeguards, not a formal risk score or a guarantee of safety.
- Audience: Is the number going only to a specific recipient, or will it appear on a public profile, post, or directory where others can copy or redistribute it? Avoid posting it publicly. The FTC warns that public personal details, including phone numbers, can help identity thieves answer security questions. FTC guidance on SIM-swap scams.
- Purpose: Does the person or service have a clear reason to need your number? If the reason is unclear, do not provide it until you verify the request.
- Alternative: Could you use an email address or the service’s in-platform messaging instead?
- Trust: Treat unsolicited requests for personal details or carrier-account information with caution. If someone claims to represent an organization, contact it using a phone number or website you already know is genuine—not details supplied in the message or call.
- Account linkage: Do important accounts use your number for password recovery or SMS verification? Where supported, use an authenticator app or security key for sensitive accounts, and set a PIN or password on your carrier account.
What someone can—and cannot—do with your number
Having your number does not automatically give someone access to your phone or online accounts. But a number shared alongside other personal details can make you easier to target with scams or social engineering. The more serious account-takeover route described by U.S. authorities involves taking control of the number through the carrier.

SIM swapping and number transfers
In a SIM swap, a criminal persuades—or otherwise causes—a mobile carrier to activate your number on a SIM or device they control. Port-out fraud moves your number to another provider. If successful, the attacker may receive your calls and texts, including SMS verification codes, and try to use those codes or account-recovery processes to access accounts such as email, financial services, or social media. A phone number’s exposure can help with targeting, but it does not prove an attacker can take over your number. How the sharing context changes the risk
| Sharing situation | What it means |
|---|---|
| Public post or profile | A broad audience may be able to find, copy, or redistribute the number. |
| Limited, purpose-specific disclosure | Fewer people see it, and the recipient has a clear reason to use it. |
| Number tied to sensitive-account recovery or SMS sign-in | A successful SIM swap could expose a route for receiving codes or account-recovery messages. |
| Carrier PIN/password and stronger sign-in methods | These add protections, but do not guarantee that carrier fraud or account compromise is impossible. |
There is no universal safe-or-unsafe threshold: the audience, purpose, account links, and protections all matter. These distinctions reflect U.S. federal guidance; carrier safeguards and account-recovery procedures can differ by country.
How to reduce the risk
- Do not post your number, address, or other identifying details publicly when there is no need.
- Set a PIN or password on your wireless carrier account. Ask the carrier what protections it offers for account changes and number transfers.
- Use unique passwords. For sensitive accounts, choose an authenticator app or security key instead of SMS verification when the service supports it. An authenticator app or security key can reduce reliance on text messages; neither is a phone-number privacy tool nor a guarantee against carrier fraud. - Verify unexpected requests for personal or carrier-account information through contact details you independently know are genuine.
- Pay attention to unexplained loss of calls, texts, and data, or a notice that your SIM was activated on another device.
What to do if your phone service suddenly stops
- Contact your carrier immediately using its known official phone number, website, or other official channel. Ask it to investigate and help you regain control of your number.
- After access is restored, change passwords on important accounts, especially email and financial services.
- Review sensitive accounts for unauthorized activity or changes, including bank, credit-card, and email accounts. Contact the relevant institution about suspicious transactions or account changes.
- Do not trust the suspicious contact to verify itself. Find the carrier or institution’s contact information independently rather than using details in an unexpected message or call. The FTC’s recovery guidance recommends contacting the carrier and checking accounts.
How common is SIM-swap fraud?
The FBI IC3 reported 320 complaints and approximately $12 million in adjusted losses in a 2022 announcement covering reported incidents from January 2018 through December 2020. Those are historical complaint and loss figures—not a current annual estimate and not a measure of the chance that any one person will be targeted. FBI IC3 announcement.
